Is there an explanation for this madness?

I would like for ANYONE to defend Belichick right now. Please do. It is simply idiotic what the Pats are doing. Haven't we learned anything from past years?  This draft is a complete joke, one of the worst any team has had.

How can one explain this? We all knew what the need was. A DE, OLB, WR.  Everyone knew we desperately needed a DE and a OLB. Yet BB doesnt know that?! You have got to be kidding me if you think it's alright to go into a season with such a weak D line.

1st round, 17th pick. can understand going with an OT. Could've taken Cameron Jordan.
28th pick- why trade it away if you can get Hayward, and he went to Steelers. Steelers know a thing or two about great LB's.

Why pick a CB with 33th pick? We have McCourty and Bodden. Pretty Solid.

What are they thinking drafting a RB? I thought we were fine with Ellis and Woohead. If they really want  a RB, why not take the best one in the draft, Ingram?!

The 3rd round was simply a disgrace. So now we need a 2nd running back. He will be the 4th best running back on this team. That can be had in 6th round.
Also wasted a pick on Mallett. So now a QB was our need? 3rd round pick who wont play in the next 4 years. I dare any of you to defend this nonsnece. Anyone remember wasting a 3rd round pick on Kevin O'Connell. Unbelievable.

Belichick has simply lost his mind. Either he is not thinking straight or he has lost it when it comes to defense.  Apparently BB thinks its not neccesary  to have a defense like Packers, Steelers.Washington just selelcted Hankerson. How can anyone argue that this wouldn't be a better pick than Mallett or the 2nd rb we took?

Hope the Pats have fun with the marshmallow defense next year and midget WR's.

You leave defense out of this equation and it's solid.  Brady's back-up and heir?
Our CB's are solid??? Yeah, now it is as it is 4 deep, which is not deep.  McCourty, Bodden, Arrington, and Dolling.  Now there is true depth at the position.
Maybe they they plans to bring in a vet for the D line?
You have to watch and see till opening day, if that ever happens.

Why didnt they draft Hanerson instead ofd wasitng a 2nd pick in 3rd round on another RB!

did you not watch last year's games? our D was awesome ! opposing QBs were scrambling all over the field! we had the best pass rush in the NFL. So, why do you think we would draft another pass rush specialist?

we don't need no stinking pass rush! all we need are CBs and RBs....and ofcourse we need to add more picks for next year......so we could draft even more CBs and RBs...and trade for the following year !!!

I'll defend Bill, he'll tell you there was no one that he felt fit his system worth picking yet for a pass rusher.

One of 2 things will happen.

    1. He will pick a player yet that he will mold to his system

    2. He will wait for free agency

Sorry man but the D was the biggest weakness last year and the OL is falling apart now. They didn't address any of those needs much like after 08 when people were crying for pass rush and 09 when people were crying for pass rush and after 10 when people were crying for pass rush.

Solder is a solid pick and so is Vereen

Ras has more missed games since HS then gams he's played. We only dress 3 RB's a game are you telling me Ridley will take Woodhead, BGE, or Vereens spot? Mallett might not even see a snap in the league if he can't grow up and get his act together.

Face it, you take the 2010 draft out and the Pats haven't had a good draft from 06-09. The Jets trading up have had better drafts then us over the last 5 years. This is disturbing

Thats what also was said about Clay Mathews, "he doesnt fit BB system".  How did that work out for us?  We missed on Jordan and Hayward this year. You don't think  Sean Peyton and Dick Lebeau know a thing or two about Linebackers?

Clay  Mathews didn't fit into BB system when everyone was begging him to take the guy. So Ron Brace and Darius Butler fit into his system right?  Hilarious if you think about it.

Pats have had the worst draft in 2011 without a doube, especially when you consider the high expectations with all the high draft picks.

Re: Is there an explanation for this madness?

I agree with the above post. If you put aside your fantasy of getting a pass rusher, they got a solid list of guys.

We had needs at OL, Runningback, WR, OLB and DL.

Goodbye Fred Taylor , Faulk and Sammy Morris. I like the two running backs we got. We are going to get more productivity there.

We got a legit left tackle and a corner who could become a starter. In a passing league we have a very solid secondary core right now.

We need that monster OLB and a young impact d-line player but we filled all of our other needs except WR. I can live with that given the other needs we filled.

We will have to go to free agency to patch together what we can on the d-line.

Struggling with this draft, must admit I liked the Solder pick, cannot understand the cornerback . The two running packs allow us to dump all the vets but where is D help and an offensive guard. Mallet is just trade bait for a future 1st round pick which will then be turned into several years of differnet 1st round pickes which will never be used..  I hope free agency is good to the Pats this year.

Re: Is there an explanation for this madness?

Forgetting our own hopes and expectations here is what they may have gotten in the first 3 rounds (orignally six picks):

    1. Future stud at OLT. Has upside to be one of the best pass blocking tackles in the league.
    2. A CB who, if he pans out (and you cant say any draft pick is a sure thing, even the pass rushers some of us wanted), gives the Pats a guy built to cover the bigger standout WRs in the league. No small thing.
    3. A solid feature RB (who will extend the expiration date on BJGE label from 9 yards to possible big runs)
    4. A solid inside runner and block er with an attitude to complement the above feature RB. And one who earned his college teamates voting him team captain (maybe not a big thing but what the heck)
    5. A big time arm developmenal QB who can learn behind Brady like Rodgers learned behind Favre
    6. A first round pick in 2012
    7. A second round pick in 2012

OK. There is no guarantee on any of the picks. But that is true of any pick taken. So taking all this at face value we might have added 7 solid additions to this team once all the picks are in and some of these guys could turn out to be great players. Solder has a good chance of being a superb OLT. If Mallet ends up being a really good big time QB 4 or 5 years from now it will also make this look even better.... long time to wait but that is the nature of this sometimes.

So look at the bright side... the potential of what they did rather than what they didnt do. Of course, if some of these players are flops it would be just as bad as if we had taken a pass rusher most liked and they flopped! One flop is not much better than another... So, until these guys flop, we might just have done really quite well.... it just feels really uncomfortable for now....  Smile...

Explain to me what needs did we fill?
I can understand taking Solder. Matt Light is still pretty solid though. Could have taken Jordan with the 17th pick, a stud pass rusher.

Was RB a need? I thought we were fine with our RB situation. if RB  was a need why not Ingram? Why waste 2 picks on RB who werent as good as Ingram?
Was CB  a need? Everyone was excited about McCourty and Bodden as a combo.
A QB was a need too?  Tom Brady and Hoyer aren't enough?  Nobody said a QB or CB was a need, but as soon as BB drafts them, "he fills a need"

We didn't fill ANY glaring needs, a DE, OLB, WR.

Apparently getting humiliated in 3 straight playoff games and missing a huge chance to draft Clay Mathews didn't teach the Pats a lesson.  Hope you guys are  enjoying our defense get shnredded by Sanchise when he has 10 seconds to throw.

Somewhere along the way, the Pats forgot what made them successful, being a tough hard hitting team. Hard to believe that they have become the Colts, when we need to be more like the  Steelers, Ravens, Packers.

Compare the playmakers  on the Packers and the Patriots. It is laughable to even compare if you ask me.  Guess BB knows something I dont.

This is all the the whining about McCourty all over again. How did that turn out? Didn't he pick off 7 passes and go to the Pro Bowl in his rookie year?

My point being, judging a draft before a single one of its players have stepped onto the field is asanine and immature.

    - I think Soldier will be a staple at Tackle for the next decade, the second most important position on the offense.

    - Vareen should have an immediate impact on the running game. We now have a very young, very fresh 4-headed monster in the backfield, in case you babies who were crying about having no running game didn't notice.

    - Dowling has a great skillset and would have gone much higher if not for injuries. With him, McCourty, and Bodden it will be tough to throw it against this secondary. People riped the McCourty pick, imagine if we hadn't had him when Bodden went down...

    - I'll admit I am skeptical on Mallet but we shall see. Being around a true pro like Brady should help his attitude, if not he will be shown the door. Maybe they drafted because they are receiving inquires about Hoyer...who knows?

    Current RBs before Draft
    Danny Woodhead
    BJGE (free agent)
    Fred Taylor (retiring probably)
Kevin Faulk (coming back from injury....maybe)
We had one sure running back...WHAT ARE YOU NAYSAYERS THINKING?

    Current OL
Mankins (franchised but uncertain to return)
Light (free agent looking for big bucks...best years behind him)
    Neal retiring
We have no one to replace Light unless you switch Vollmer
Last year you were all screaming that "what did BB do to protect TB?"
    WE NEEDED an Left Tackle

Pass rusher...Almost everyone in the league needs one, but unless you take the top 1,2 or 3 you're not getting an impact rusher.

We didn't need a large number of new players, we're already the youngest team in the league.

I'm not wild about Dowling, but Merriweather may be on the ship out list.
I'm pleased with Mallett.  May make it possible to trade Hoyer when season starts.   Lots of players injured on last year's defensive line, 2nd year players should improve.

Two firsts, two seconds next year when you know what the rules are.
