The Patriots have announced several jersey number changes as the team shifts into regular-season mode. Significant to note is veteran guard Brian Waters being assigned No. 54, which was previously worn by long-time linebacker Tedy Bruschi:

Will take some time getting used to not seeing Sammy Morris out there wearing number 34 and I will be taking second glances when I see number 54 out on the field.

A sign of a player who is not so full of himself and a selfless "team" player.  If he does get voted in the HoF, the Pats mayt retire the jersey at that time.

Where are you getting this info on number changes?  On the PATS Home website, under Team/Roster, these changes have not yet been made.  And some of the players that you listed are not even on the active roster. 

thats pretty funny of james ihedigbo to move up one number from 43-44. also i take it mloden prolly wanted 27 so arrington gave it to him with arrington having 24 bc it probably means something too him. also if anyone is worthy of wearing 54 its definitly and all pro future hall of famer like brian waters.

The best news of this group of new PS squad was the return of Thomas Welch the project O-lineman who Dante hand selected last year only to have the A hole from Minnesota Childress snag him off the Waiver wire before the Patriots could put him on the PS. As far as numbers go it's not surprising that Waters was given his normal number 54 even though it was Tedy's just remember that Spikes is wearing 55 and Willie Mac didn't care about his number being used in fact he encouraged it.

I hope they retire 12 one day.
