Not excited, but he fills a need.

I have thought Tedy was done for a couple seasons.

But Seau has value, this year and beyond, because he is still very strong at the point of attack.

He has the size to be an effective two-down guy, with three-down upside if used sparingly, as to keep his legs fresh. And has the smarts/experience to play zone at the goal line where the field is smaller.

Yes, he isn't very good in space anymore, but the above attributes make him valuable.

I don't think anyone would turn him away.  However, it was encouraging to see the D perform as well as they did today without Seau, Bruschi, Seymore, Harrison, Vrable, etc.

If this is true his leadership may exceed his performance, but he would be a welcome addition.

Adam SchefterAdam_Schefter Some stories and players never get old. Barring unforseen, Patriots are expected to sign veteran 40-year-old LB Junior Seau this week.

It'd be fantastic IF We could get Seau a ring...the guy's ultimately earned one by his vast time and insane efforts in the League.

True (RE: "the time of the signing"), and even though Guyton was flying all over the field today, Pats need and want Junior as fresh as possible come playoffs-tough trade off, Pats are still real thin at ILB, but when Mayo's back AND Seau AND Guyton coming into his own...good God, look out!

of note:  Guyton besides, I don't want to forget giving a major "shout out" to our bone-jarring Safeties, Merriweather/McGowan, coupled with Pats new-found-blazing-fast CBs...(with a lil' side note to the efforts of Mike Wright on the line).

Who are they going to drop to make room?  Who goes on Injured Reserve?  James Sanders, who got injured today?  Joey Galloway, who might be the NFL's poster child for lifetime concussions?  Just wondering.  If there isn't anyone, Seau may have to wait until next week to join.  Right now he is money in BB's back pocket, the 54th guy on the roster, a guy you don't want to sign until a spot opens up.

I'm sure they will eventually sign him, but he needs to get out of the contract he has with Versus first. He's under contract with that station to do his reality show.

With Mayo out for a couple of weeks, the Patriots definately need the leadership of Seau right now!  The defense lacks the necessary linebackers to perform a 3-4 defense, and the nickle gets killed every game.  If Clayton hadn't dropped the last pass of the game yesterday, everyone would notice this!

I think if Mayo and Seau are on the field, Thomas and Guyton will be on the outside. Woods will take a backup role.

    Re: Junior Seau to return?

Does signing Seau mean that the Pats are going to work out of the 3-4 base defense more now?

Seau clearly does NOT have the speed anymore to be effective in a 4-3 base.  He should be fine as a role player as ILB with Guyton or Mayo, playing in space, in a 3-4 with AD T moving to OLB opposite Woods/TBC.

Guyton (NE's best LB so far this year), Mayo and ADT can play in both systems.  Seau only in the 3-4.  TBC/Burgress as OLB in the 3-4 or DE in the 4-3.
