Just read Tony Gonzalez might be open to the idea of playing with an Elite QB

Wow! I'm excited just thinking of the possibility....he would be the perfect mentor for Gronk! I know the defense needs to be addressed but if there is a chance for this guy to play in NE it should be explored!

What was your source on that?  It's intriguing to be sure but it'd be helpful to know where this orginiated.

And how exactly would Gonzalez "mentor" Gronk? The most dominant TE in the game today.

    Some level of off-field maturity?

Gronk is a 4 year pro, I don't think he needs a mentor, but Gonzo would make a nice complement to Gronk.

Tony Gonzalez is a sure hall of famer...you mean to tell me he couldn't be a good mentor to a young Gronk especially off field!

    Please!!!!!!!

    +1 -

Granted, who are we to tell Gronk how to act off the field on his own free time, but, he hasn't exactly had the best of spotlights shining down on him with the type of off field activities he has chosen to partake and have publicized.  We may grumble and as long as he can continue to play as the #1 TE in the NFL, we'll take some of his "youthful" exhuberance in stride.

Would like to know the source and see the actual quote. The statement is interesting for two reasons.

    1) He's saying Ryan is not elite even though getting paid elite money.

    2) He could be referring to either PM or TB. However, given everyone knows the problems the Pats is having now at TE, he was probably talking about TB.

    3) At what price to the Pats? Acquiring him at a reasonable price could be great for the Pats. That could relieve the pressure to pickup a TE high in the draft, so the Pats can get other needs at OL and DL.

If Gonzalez has a team in mind, and if it is the Pats, what he may have seen is a team that made it as far as it did with all those injuries and without much of a TE to throw to when Gronk was out.

    Consider:

Gonzalez playing on the Pats would be the 2nd TE to Gronk and not the primary.  It would also bring back to the Pats a one-two punch at TE they missed this past season.  Gonzalez was still mighty good given his age.  Plus, he does not have to play as much as he did with the Falcons.  Being on the Pats may give him that very good chance to get that elusive SB ring.  We have all surmised what the Pats would have done if the D didn't all go on IR and Gronk stayed healthy through the playoffs.

Assuming our D gets his act together and the right moves are made, this Potential move could put us over the top IMO. Not in a sense of Gonzo being there is Gronk is out  but if the two are available in the playoffs. We go from not having our best TE to having him PLUS the previous best tight end in the league. Thats hard to defend. I dont really like Gronk running those deep seem routes but I think it was due to us NOT having a deep threat. Thats why he got hurt IMO. YOU dont see Witten getting hurt all the time. They use him as a posession guy who occasionaly runs a seam. The Corner route needs to go.

Have Gronk run seam routes while Gonzo works underneath and still have your slot WR plus Vareen. Now we can actually move the ball vs a good D. Factor in the growth to Dobson who should be a legit downfield target and the speedster Boyce being used in playaction to get behind the D, well you have a complete O again. Pray for no injuries and D and Go get it!

Gonzo/Gronk!  Imagine the T-shirts that would sell and the things TFB  could do!

seems like a huge blunder by Dimitri, doesnt it? Gonzo would have been attractiove to any number of teams (Pats included) and ATL could have secured another asset for Gonzo since they were out of the playoffs. Strange circumstances.

Gee, maybe we could also find someone to mentor Brady and BB. And while we are at it any chance we could get Larry Bird and Bobby Orr a few tips even if it is a little late in the game for them?

Besides freakish athletic ability and great hands what do we know about Gronks knowledge of the game?  How about his route running which was shaky last year, causing a couple of pics?  How about what to do in offseason in terms of taking care of your body(Tony is the maybe the healthiest guy in the league) and then about being a professional.

Wow you guys think the game is all Brute force and no Brains?  This is why Gronk hasnt been healthy in ONE playoff run and Tony G is going on 40 with a handful of games missed.....smh at you guys...

This could be big. If he does come that wouldn't force Gronk to return too soon so he can stay healthy. Keep Gronk out a whole IMO. We will win 11+ games with TB at QB and BB and HC no matter what. Keep Gronk out for awhile so we can actually have him for the playoffs for once.

Gonzo could be huge for this O. Just a good reliable 3rd down guy and then get that dual TE back in this o

Hate to be the dream crusher, but why is it assumed he'd want to play for the Pats or anybody other than ATL? The way he phrased it, it seemed as if he'd be open to playing for Atlanta if they're in contention at Thanksgiving.

Oh and he's still under contract with them, by the way. Signed a two year deal before last season.

I think ATL would cut him or trade him under his own wishes. If you retire which he officially did December 30 does the contract void, or just freeze?

If he wants to win a superbowl he should play for: Seattle (not elite QB + awsome Defense), San Francisco(not elite QB + great defense), Denver (elite QB), Patriots (elite QB). I really don´t see any other team next year.

Maybe Carolina (not elite QB + great defense) and Saints (elite QB)

I can only hope he´ll pick the patriots. It would help our draft needs.

Re: Just read Tony Gonzalez might be open to the idea of playing with an Elite QB

First, if he plays at all, he's not playing for anybody until near the end of the season. He said if Atlanta was 9-2 he'd consider coming back there. He never said anything about playing for anybody else. He's still under contract with them, retirement doesn't terminate their rights and he hasn't apparently filed retirement papers anyway.

That's roughly Thanksgiving (well after the trade deadline, by the way). So, he plays for Atlanta or Atlanta would have to release him in order for him to play anywhere else. He's in Brian Waters limbo if they don't.

He is definitely not going to be in anybody's training camp, so this isn't going to affect anybody's offseason planning or their draft.
