What happens to onside kicks??? Do you have to declare ? this is the option that makes all games interesting, desperate,  dramatic at the games end. I used to love watching teams try it against the Pats in 2003 and 2004 and ALWAYS Christian Fauria came up with ball.

New Orleans would have lost the SB if they had to declare " we're onside kicking" at the start of the second half!

I hope they don't get rid of it, but one alternative would be to use the same rules for a kick off as for a safety kick, but using the 35 yard line (rather than the 20 yard line used for safeties) as the restraining line.  The punt rather than the placekick would slow things down a bit and help avoid the full speed collisions that happen on kick offs but you'd still put the ball in play with a kick and have the possibility of an exciting return play.

Where's this talk coming from? Anyone relevant at the NFL or just talking heads?

    Re: Kickoffs banned in NFL?

It was discussed as a safety measure but turned down by the owners. Right now it's a lot of speculation after the kick of was moved to the 35yrd line. A lot of writers think it's only a matter of time and write as so. But, as to date the owners have voted down to remove kickoffs completely
