    Long snapper . . .

Cave is a 6-foot-3, 303-pounder who was a four-year letterman at Notre Dame. He is primarily a center, but likely will be tried at guard by the Pats.   He also was the long snapper for the Irish. He signed with the Browns as a free agent and was among the team’s final cuts.  My question is, if the Pats work him as a long snapper again they maybe they can have a long snapper who backs up in the OL, most teams care a long snapper who does nothing else and takes up a slot on the 53 man roster . . . so this guy could turn out unique.

I posed this possibility on the "Braxton Cove(sic)" thread ... does seem very BB-like.

    Re: Long snapper . . .

The idea of a specialist snapper is a fairly recent phenomenon in the NFL - they used to take a OL or DL or LB aside each year and teach him to long snap. Of course they had a few more botched field goals and snaps sailing over the punters head or arriving on the bounce, but ...

It does seem like a luxury to devote a roaster spot to a snapper who has no other value. But then it also seems like a luxury to devote a roster spot to gunner like Slater who has proven to be a very bad receiver.

I still have his jersey in my closet. Not sure how many long snappers sell jerseys.
