In Response to Re: Mankins signs Extension! 52 mill over 6 yrs (20 mill signing bonus) : Plus another $10 million in guarantees. I think that is the major difference here. This one has more years, and very little 'funny money.' You would have to be insane to sign a contract with only $5 million guaranteed when you are a player of his caliber. He waited it out, and got himself a great deal. And NE gets to keep their best lineman, and a leader on the team. As far as clearing salary... I don't know what NE plans on doing with this, because they are probably close to $12 million under the cap with this one -- and that is before the $3 million exemption.

Signing Mankins to a long term deal was a must. Why? Because in all likelihood, this is Matt Light's last season as a Patriot. Ditto for center Dan Koppen, whose contract comes up next season. Mankins will replace Light as  the veteran leader of what will soon be as very young Patriots' OL.

My prediction for the Pats' OL next season: LT Nate Solder, LG Mankins, OC Mike Brewster, Ohio State (acquired through the draft), RG Marcus Cannon, RT Sebastien Vollmer.

In Response to Re: Mankins signs Extension! : Actually, the new deal is $30 million guaranteed. The Globe report hit the nail on the head ... it dwarfs Mangold's and Evans' ... as it should. Considering he never actually even made it to the open market, where his deal would have likely been higher, that is quite a haul. But then, they know his value better than anyone.

I was taking the $21 million from Rusty's post.  Just read the article. $30 mill guaranteed . .  that's nearly the whole amount of the Pats' last offer!

Boy, a bet Mankins is elated he hired Bauer and not Rusty as his agent! Smile

    It is certainly a factor.

I think they will probably bring Koppen back for short dollars rather than let a rookie man center. But the general picture you draw up is exactly what N is putting together.

    Solder - Mankins - ???? - Cannon - Vollmer

That will be a mean and talented line. And, in the long run, an upgrade over the unit they have been fielding the last few seasons. So, so glad Kazcur is gone.

Mankins is awfully good.  I saw a few of the NE games last year, and the line was average before Mankins came back.  After it seemed like the Great Wall of China with Brady having all day to throw.

Just admit it Rusty, you were dead wrong on this one. No way the old deal had anything close to $21 million guaranteed.  Bauer was smart to advise Mankins not to sign the deal the Pats initially offered him.  Mankins is probably depositing somewhere between $7 and $16 million more in the bank today then he would have two years ago had he signed that original deal.

Russ is a loud mouth blowhard.  But he's also like the Energizer Bunny - he and all of his obnoxiousness just keeps coming.  It never matters how frequently or severely you prove him wrong, he keeps coming in exactly the same way every single time.

Rusty's okay . . . he provides us all endless hours of entertainment. . . and all apparently for free . . . though honestly the Globe should pay him a salary for boosting the number of hits to their website and driving up their ad revenue.
