MANNING GETS NEW CONTRACT WITHOUT TAKING A PHYSICAL!!!!!

Pro Football Talk reports that Manning got his huge contract without having to take a physical, even though they knew he had a serious neck issue.

I guess this should end any realistic discussion that the management of the Colts has a clue of what they are doing. Polian and Irsay are a couple of absolute morons for signing this guy without doing their due diligence....it's just the height of irresponsibility to their franchise and their fans. I understand that Manning IS the Colts, for all practical purposes, but it's just such a dangerous and stupid thing to do! If Brady had a similar situation, I would fully expect the ownership and management of the Pats to make sure he wasn't going to miss a year, or his career, before signing him to a long term contract worth $90 Million! Now the  Colts are hamstrung for the foreseeable future, and must release or trade Manning prior to the start of the next "NFL year" or they'll be on the hook for another $20 + million next year as well, all on the cap.....

Glad this franchise is owned and run by intelligent, responsible people....we should be grateful!

    Look at it this way:

Regardless of Manning's immediate physical health, what does the fan base do if the Colts don't extend Manning?

You could say that management put itself in an untenable position by allowing their quarterback situation to deteriorate to this point, and that would be an arguable premise, but there was simply no workable scenario in which the Colts don't resign the heart and soul of their franchise and retain the blessings of the faithful.

Re: MANNING GETS NEW CONTRACT WITHOUT TAKING A PHYSICAL!!!!!

While I fully understand the need for the franchise to give Manning a huge contract to maintain pay equity for their superstar QB versus Brady and keep the Indy natives happy, they have done so without a concern for the financial and operational health of the team, and therefore have severely crippled the future success of the franchise. The management of the team has a fiduciary responsibility to the owners and the league, therefore, their fans as well.... just a stupid, irresponsible move.

You just don't back up a brinks truck and shovel $90 million to anyone just because they are loved by the fans....the real world shouldn't work that way...and heck, I hate the Colts! This was just plain wrong no matter how you slice it!

[QUOTE]They had no choice. Indy is a struggling economic market just like almost everywhere else and they had to sign him. Obviously, the inelligent move would have been to have some developed QBs in the pipeline or trade for a Kyle Orton type and unload Manning for picks as well. But, they can't do that in that market. Gomer is Indianapolis/Indiana. The dude is a god there, someone who can do no wrong regardless of what he actually plays like, and is the economic driver of ther sports scene It's true. Underpants will try to spin it, but Gomer had them backed into a corner and it may be a huge mistake down the line, but they really had no choice on paper.

Other than the economic driver of their sports scene the same can be said of Brady. The dude's a god here and its not a bad thing in the least bit. You can blame Indy management all you want for not prepping for a situation like this but can you blame the fans for worshipping the guy? He's been one of the most consistently dominant players in NFL history

Ok, I see what you were saying. I still say Brady's a god here though, at least in my mind lol. How about those Pacers! Even IU basketball pretty much sucks right now, Dogg's hoppin on that Butler train!

It's a sad state of affairs...it's also an indication of the level of sports sophistication between a place like INDY and a place like Boston. Here, I think, we simply expect management to do due diligence. There in INDY, the clamour for the franchise, glory boy QB alone will drive the market and decisions about the team. The long term health of the franchise, hence the long term commitment to the fans, is left , really, to chance, like someone playing the lottery. That would not fly in Boston, or NYC, or Chicago. The fans would hate to see Brady go, but if it meant signing him to a contract that would cripple the team for years after he was able to play, they would EXPECT the team to do the right thing and save the operational health of the franchise, Brady or no Brady.

The management absolutely put themselves in this position.

    1.  the promised him a contract in the offseason after the superbowl.  Didn't happen.
    2.  didn't make an offer to him until nearly half way through last season to which Manning said he didn't want the distraction.
    3.  no progress made in the month between the end of the season and the superbowl.
    4.  then the NFLPA got to Manning Brady and Brees - so it seems that maybe at this point manning stalled his talks (possibly the only time he could be faulted).
    5.  Lockout - no negotiating.
    6.  Contract signed after lockout over.
    7.  Colts brass had the opportunity to do the deal before this became an issue.

Further, manning had had the procedure he had in may done before.  He played after it.  No reason to think it would be a problem this time.  Many are predicting he will play again.

We shall see.  No way the colts would have gotten out of doing that contract.  If they had someone else would have scooped him and his injury up immediately.  If Belichick can draft a guy with cancer, then the colts can take a flyer on an injury that occurred before and was resolved enough to play on arguably the greatest qb ever.

    LOL - dumbest post ever.

The colts had to do it because Indy's economy is bad.  How warped is your mind that it can actually think this sht up?  stay away from acid, shrooms, or x.  Your mind is fcked up enough as it is.

btw - there are plenty of Indy people that would support Orton in the absence of Manning.  He's a purdue grad.

When you are a 4 time mvp earning 2 of them in the last 3 years, helping your team to a 14-0 start and a trip to the superbowl 2 seasons ago and are arguably the best QB ever - you'd have leverage everywhere but possibly the pearly gates.

another dum bass comment from the resident dum bass.  The only thing your market has that indy doesn't is more people to fill seats when some stop going to games.

That's worth something, for sure, but it has nothing to do with sophistication, due diligence, etc.  And as for what wouldn't work in the large markets, I don't see the cubs, sox, knicks, mets suffering from their ineptitude.

the same goes for the lean season of the celts, pats, jets, bears, etc.

Doesn't it suck for your arguments to fail so frequently redhead.  Don't you get tired of be bludgeoned on a daily basis by me and everyone else?

Re: MANNING GETS NEW CONTRACT WITHOUT TAKING A PHYSICAL!!!!!

The difference is the Pats selected a guy who should have gone much earlier if not diagnosed and who already underwent treatment for a type of cancer that has a very high rate of success when treated...and he was caught very early on...so they have every reason to believe Cannon will play, either this year or next, at full ability...and here's the key point, THEY DID THEIR DUE DILIGENCE, THEIR MEDICAL STAFF CHECKED, THE NFL MEDICAL STAFF CHECKED AT THE COMBINE, so there was a good basis for making the selection with a fairly reliable sense of the positive future outcome.....and it will not cost them $90 million

Manning? Yes he had already had one neck surgery, but a second, with disc involvement, in a normal person, is considered dangerous...in a pro athlete, it's extremely dangerous, given you are dealing with the cervical spine and the violent nature of football. There just is no room for error when you are dealing with someone's spinal collumn and nerves as a result of an injury to a disc. Their medical team should have told them the risks of failure or prognosis. OPPS!, that's right, they didn't check before they signed the contract~! m

No comparison between Cannon and Manning. One is considered a gamble pick with a high chance of success, especially given the financial impact on the Pats, which is close to nil. Manning's surgery had a great risk of failure, or at least limited success, for a player in an urgently critical position (QB) that needs to be playing at his utmost ability, given his impact on that team's and franchise's success, both on the field and financially.

Yes, he had to be paid....but yes, he should have been checked before signing that contract. Both Irsay and Polian are fools for the way this was handled.

LOL...the only thing that gets beat on every day in this discussion arena is YOU...an all day sucker is what you are....LMAO....you and the NY trolls are what we live to chew up every day we come here...and don't even go near the neighborhood of sophistication of fan bases...LMAO, ROFL....INDY falls near the bottom of the deep dark well when it comes to knowledge and understanding of the game.

You expect people here to get their nipples all hard over Butler basketball? Are you for real? I think you have been smoking too many corn husks there bucko!

Re: MANNING GETS NEW CONTRACT WITHOUT TAKING A PHYSICAL!!!!!

Would i be wrong to assume that manning is going to make in one week this year, what cannon will make for the duration of his first contract?

    Yeah fair comparision.

Manning's base salary this year is more then marcus cannons entire 4 year contract. Mannings Cap hit this year is 16,000,000 Or 1 million a week(which he will miss all of them)

Marcus cannons Cap hit this year is 425,125 or $26,570 a week.

If manning isnt 100% before the end of the season, i see it very hard for the colts not to cut him and cancel that massive contract.

If Indy wants to sell tickets then they should make a play for Carson Palmer. Its only 100 miles to wine and dine Mike Brown. With Cincys train wreck of a season their about to have they better stock up on some draft picks for cheap depth. Brown has been pretty stubborn and dumb before why not grab a few draft picks for what you cant have anyway. I had visions that Palmer shows up the the browns office, they have to put him on the rosted and cut someone. Also they have to pay him. It would only make sense to trade him. I wouldnt ever go to Ohio again though if I was Palmer lol.
