I have no problem being on an island here.   I think Johnny is a 1st round talent and will have a very good NFL career.   Time will tell.

He is going to a team that is far from ideal.  Once a proud franchise, the Browns have become a joke for more than a dozen years.  Now they've got yet another head coach.  If you're counting, that's 8 coaches in the same coaching career as Paul Brown.

The loss of Josh Gordon is every bit as big to the Browns offense as the loss of Gronk to the Pats.   Probably greater for the Browns.  He would have been the perfect target for JM to draw defenders away from the LOS and give JM room to operate.

Does he have an ego?    I guess he's guilty there.   Most QBs have a cockiness inside whether they show it outwardly.  You have to have extreme self-confidence to be successful as an NFL QB.   If you want a toned down QB maybe you'd prefer Ryan Fitzpatrick.   I'll take JM.

I didn't see it, but I heard he flipped of the redskin's sideline. A QB should know better than to taunt an opposing team's defense, the last time I saw a QB do that he had a separated shoulder a play later - I think it was an ex BC QB playing for the Jets that did it to Chris Slade...the next play Slade dislocated his shoulder. Those guys are dangerous people out there on defense, they are trained to hit and they most definitely can seriously injure you if they want to. Personally I'm looking forward to watching this idiot fall on his face, looks like he is on his way!

Was it Glenn Foley?  That's funny you remembered that because I remember that too.

    That was him! You're right.

Im not gonna say he cant play in this league and throwing to Josh Gordon(why is he playing preseason) is usually a good option but Gordon didnt look good. That being said, Manziel is not gonna last long if he cant stand and deliver. The holes were closing fast when he went to take off. I give him credit for being tough and always getting back up but if doesnt start endearing to his peers, he is gonna take one big time hit and be out for the year...Just ask Hoyer how hard these guys hit, he can tell him.

The sad part is this guy is gonna be talked about every week even when he isnt playing. Another Tebow in that regard but personally, I dont have an opinion of him personally. I think he is an exciting player who may or may not make it in the NFL. Too early to tell.  He has a running back, TE and a good D so we'll see. I think Hoyer should start the season though.

In regards to his potential in the NFL, he definitely has more than Tebow did. He might make it...or he might not. I don't think the media is helping him out with all the hype they're creating around him.

That is part of it but he could have made it much better by coming in and working his tail off instead of having pics of him getting ready to ski in club bathroom!  Think about Aaron Rodgers. He was a late 1st round pick who also sat all day in the green room, embarrassed but he got to sit behind Favre for 4 years and not one person cared that he was a backup and look how it worked for him. Manziel doesnt have that luxury but he is part to blame so ..... Sink or Swim young fella!

Funny thing about Rodgers: even as a rookie when they had him play the opponent's QB against the starting D in practice he would have no look throws that were deadly and destroyed their starting D. It drove the D nuts. He was ready really early. They just could not keep him off the field any longer. So it was not just patience. In fact rather than having a big mouth or demanding attention like a spoiled Jet he just let his play shut everyone else's mouth.

He seems to have the physical tools but that's only part of what he'll need to make it.  For a guy a few months into his NFL career (and who has done nothing of note professionally) we've heard way too much about supermodels, Vegas and partying.  Seems football is a means to be famous, and he lets his fame take him anywhere except the practice field and the film room.

Don't know about Johnny being "a combo of Leaf and Mark Sanchez". Based on what I've seen, Sanchez was a better prospect.

Brian Hoyer has been named the Brown's starter, as maturity issues killed Manziel's chances. How could he hope to win a starting job from a veteran QB, after showing up late for a team meeting? What kind of message does that send to the coaching staff, and the team? Flipping off the Redskin's bench was both boorish and childish...qualities that you won't find in a leader of men.

Just amazing how different the general consensus around here is when it's another teams player. When it's Gronk everyone gets upset and says he's just a kid let him have fun. Last time I checked Gronk is a cocky self loving sob who parties and hangs with porn stars etc etc too and he has done just fine in the nfl. Can we let him play before passing judgement already??

Good post. I am in a wait and see mode. Would I build a franchise around him? maybe not but it doesnt mean he cant have success in the league. Its gonna be determined by lots of factors. He may not be endearing himself to teamates and all that but to say he is gonna be a bust because he likes to party, is arrogant or whatever is a bit premature. I mean Deion Sanders had the most flash of any player I remember coming out. Jerry Curl, all those gold chains, Cocky, arrogant, Partied w/women and talked A LOT!!! BUT he proceeded to reinvent the position and become the greatest hired gun, shutdown CB in the game that was almost a guarantee to get you a ring. Now Im not supporting Johnny or calling him Deion but just saying, his attitude is not gonna determine his career as there are plenty of a -holes in the NFL. Its gonna be his play. Nobody here knows what this kid does in terms of studying whatever so to assume he is lazy just because he has a life outside of football is a stretch unless proven.

I turned on 98.5 on my way home yesterday and they were talking about Manziel, probably all day and more than any pats coverage. This is what i dont get. Let the kid play and stop talking about him.

Difference is Gronk has already proven himself in the NFL. Despite injuries, he is arguably the best TE in football today when healthy. On the other hand, Manziel hasn't played a meaningful snap in an NFL game yet.

I'm not hoping for Manziel to fail, nor am I thinking he will be a bust. I'm taking a wait-and-see approach.

Good point, Gronk proved it on the field at least.  I don't particularly care to hear about Gronk's off field exploits either, but there is no arguing that despite some questionable activities he is ready come game day.

For the record, I hope Manziel pans out.  But there is no doubt that he enjoys fame and everything it brings.  He may shut the critics up at some point, but I bet his coaches and GM are nervous at times.

What I think Johnny doesn't understand is that he doesn't have many physical advantages in today's NFL at his size. He's not a freak of nature kind of guy who can just get by on athleticism. For him to succeed he needs a humility and work ethic - seems to me he has neither

I don't know the guy personally, and he doesn't affect my life...so I don't really care if he succeeds or fails lol. Like you, I just thought the comparison was unfair seeing how Gronk has proven himself on the field. Honestly, if Gronk was doing the same thing before playing an NFL snap, I would have my concerns...but he wasn't.

    Re: Manziel Already Unglued

The issue with Manziel  seems to be that when his 1st and 2nd options to pass are gone he runs. Great if runs as fast as Vick did about 10 yrs ago or if you are as big as Newton is right now (6;5 265 lbs). Thing is he is neither as fast or as big (cf: difficult to bring down even for an LB in Newtons case) therefore, he essentially has to become pocket passer or he has to make plays on the run or outside the pocket(say like Roethlisburger). I might also say that he has to digest an NFL playbook (albeit Cleveland's) and he would not be the first QB to struggle with a PB in that regard. Not starting him for 1st regular season game is a good move because he is not even near being ready; thing is Hoyer has not looked good either so right now it looks as though Manziel lost the starting job when in fact, Hoyer was like an incumbent politician: he may have lost the popular vote but won the majority of electoral seats.

I can't see Manziel altering his style and I can't see him lasting for more than 3 years if he thinks he can run for 1st downs all the time in the NFL when his first two reads are covered. That said it is way to early to tell. I would be very surprised if he morphs into Fran Tarkenton or Drew Brees (same height?).

He might have been though and it went unreported. Gronk didn't come into the league with the same hype that Manziel is. Maybe not to the same degree as JM but I wouldn't be surprised if he was partying it up.

I think the obsession with JM is pretty annoying but like you I certainly don't despise the kid because of it like some people do. He has some maturing to do for sure, some get it and some don't. Time will tell.
