SCOUTING REPORT Buchanan seemed poised to be a first- or second-round pick after an impressive junior season in 2011, but his draft stock plummeted after a disappointing 2012. Playing opposite Whitney Mercilus - the Texans' first-round pick a year ago - Buchanan had 7 1/2 sacks and 13 1/2 tackles for loss as a junior. Those numbers dropped to 4 1/2 sacks and seven tackles for loss a year later. Part of the problem had to do with Mercilus being gone, so offenses could focus more of their attention on Buchanan. Another possible reason for the drop-off in production was Buchanan - in the summer before his senior season - being involved in a fight leaving him with a broken jaw. His jaw was wired shut and he was forced to eat all his meals through a straw for a week. The liquid diet caused him to lose 20 pounds. He was already a bit on the lighter side for a defensive end, and the weight loss certainly didn't help. He was often pushed around by stronger offensive linemen and had a hard time creating separation. Despite the down season, he was still invited to the scouting combine, but did little to impress. He had just 22 reps in the bench press, a pretty paltry number for a player at a position that is supposed to generate fear. For a player with such high expectations heading into 2012, Buchanan has tumbled down draft boards and it seems he'll get selected in one of the final rounds - if at all.

Wow, got into a fight and had his jaw wired shut..lost weight.

Pushed around Sr year. and showed lack of strength in press reps.

Sounds like he has upside possibilites if he would gain the weight back and get on a traiing regime. Don;t know why he could not get back to his Jr. year performance.

Kind of guy to take a chance on in the 7th round.

You generally dont expect a 7th rounder to make the team. So if he grows up quick maybe he can make something of himself. Hope he finds a role that he can do well.

Haha I thought the same thing.  I hope, for his sake, that he at least got beat by Sasquatch.

    Re: Meet Michael Buchanan

But seriously, seems like another low risk/ high reward 7th round pick.  These are the kinds of players you take a flyer on in the later rounds.  If he can get on a strict NFL training regimen, he might be able to make the team and hopefully an impact.  Solid pick.
