Merriweather wanted to get cut...

This whole Merriweather situation is strange. 1. The Patriots couldn't get at least a low draft pick for him in a trade. 2. The Bears didn't trade for him with a low draft pick and pay him the 1.5 million from the last year of his contract. Instead they sign him for 3-3.5 million. Methinks Merriweather's agent had this all planned out. Merriweather clearly was not happy playing in BB's system. By continuing to not followBB's directions. he forced BB to cut him, thereby getting an opportunity to join a team, the Bears, with a system more compatible to his style of play, for twice the money. Anyone have any thoughts on this? -

Why is it called drinking his kool-aid? Bill is the coach... do you job or be replaced.

Merriweather never intended to play BB's system. By continuing to do it his way and not BB's, he got released from a situation not to his liking, and ended up in a better one. BB knew BM was doing this as well. Hence the cut and no trade. -

The Patriots had the highest number of claims against their cut players. The writing was on the wall that Meriweather was going to be dropped so why would the Bears (or anyone else) offer the Patriots a draft pick if they all saw that he was to be placed on the waiver wire? All teams have scouts looking to see what players are tossed garbage time during the pre-season to see what might be available.
Essentially the Bears waited until the 53man cut down and scooped him for nothing but money...
Why does it have to be more complicated than the Bears just being frugal? -

Did you honestly LIKE watching him play?
Did you have faith in BM's ability to be that safety gap? Or were you like everyone else in the stands and on the sidelines holding your breath never knowing if he was there to make a play.
Kool-aid??? It's a job. Do it well or get fired. -

Whatever happened , he certainly took the high road saying all the right things. He thank the Patriots, BB, said he loved Boston and the fans, while embracing the opportunity to play in Chicago. Thanks Merri and good luck with your future. -

Posted by Shtarka"merriweather never intended to play bb's system".....he was a 2time pro bowler in bb's system, this was the last year of his contract, wes welker needs to be signed, hence the cut and no trade. bb knows what hes doing, expect a agreement with welker sometime this year. -

Sounds like the Bears are paying attention to the principle of the 6 P's:

For whatever reason, he was not getting it done with the Patriots. Maybe a fresh start in Chicago will do him some good. -

Vac,
Excuse me, but do you have any idea what you are talking about? If the Bears had traded for Merriweather, most likely he would have returned a 4th or 5th round draft choice. In that case, the Bears would have been on the hook for Merriweather's pro rated bonus and this years salary from his rookie contract, which is estimated at approx $1.5mil.
Instead, the Bears paid him a reportedly $3-$3.5 million costing them between $1.5-$2 million rather than give up that draft choice
