Vollmer replacement?
My read on Patriots' signing of OT Will Svitek -- insurance w/ uncertainty of Sebastian Vollmer's return. Could potentially be swing tackle.

The Patriots are in an uncertain spot with free agent tackle Sebastian Vollmer, but they added some depth to the position.
According to Field Yates of ESPNBoston.com, the Patriots have signed former Falcons tackle Will Svitek.
Svitek missed last season with an arm injury, but started 10 games for the Falcons in 2011 when starter Sam Baker struggled.
Svitek’s a solid depth addition, but not the kind of player you want replacing Vollmer, who remains unsigned.

sounds like a camp body move. I think Reiss has it right, insurance incase of Vollmer. They are high on Cannon and I don't think they would blink letting him start but adding depth is always welcome nd means you don't have to spend a high pick on a backup OL

depth move, compete for back-up job with zesevics. since he's low on draft picks, BB will probably bring in a lot of these types in place of mid to low round picks. put them in training camp and see how they do.

He's good competition for a tackle spot. Solid move.

Remember, he was a starter for Atlanta for 10 games before he got injured.

typical BB covering a potential loss in the case of Seabass! Svitek handled the job of LT for the Falcons when Baker was struggling so I would say that he comes in with the possibility of competing for RT job or b/u swing tackle job. All this is just in case Vollmer defects to Denver or other teams in need of a LT/RT.

Long needs to set the market
No, he doesn't. Long plays LT and they traditionally get more. Vollmer and Eric Winston need to sign and that will be the market for RTs. Or, Andre Smith might be seen as good enough to be the market at RT.
Vollmer is 28, Winston 29, and Smith is 26.

In Atlanta, Svitek appeared in 45 games, starting 12, including 10 during the 2011 season at left tackle when Sam Baker struggled. He's regarded as a quality pass protector.
The 31-year old-missed the entire 2012 season after suffering an upper body injury during the preseason with the Falcons.
The Patriots have Nate Solder firmly entrenched as their starter at left tackle, but the team does not have an experienced reserve for him on the roster. In addition, Sebastian Vollmerremains a free agent, and Svitek could be a candidate to compete for the starting right tackle spot if Vollmer signs elsewhere.

Always a BB connection,
@jeffphowe It should be noted that Svitek's OL coach last year was non other than Belichick disciple and Former Fresno St. HC Pat Hill.

I look at it this way, if he is a half decent player he should be more than servicable with our line coach and a QB that gets rid of the ball as fast as he does. How many no name tackles did well here? Almost every single one of them.

In the ESPN blog, it also said he was out of the NFL for the 2008 season. He was cut by KC after 2007 and no one picked him up until 2009. He missed 2012 due to injury. We will see whether he has recovered well enough and good enough to make the team.
Why won't the Pats pursue someone like Winston?
