    Moving Down in the Draft

Could the Pats have obtained the same players with their original picks? Did all the maneuvering change anything? What was really gained?
Or is this a financial ploy to reduce player salary negotiating leverage, since they fall into the second round?

You got Butler in the 2nd round and you wonder what was gained?  Open your eyes man!  Although they didn't address the rush issue this has been a grand draft so far.

Thats right, we pretty much got the guy many wanted at 23, Butler, plus 2 additional 3rd rounders tomorrow.  Gave up a 4th and 6th rounder to move up from 47 to take Brace.  Good chance a 4th or 6th rounder wouldnt make the team anyway.

Garytx,They moved down to save money and could have still landed all the first four picks with the original ordering, All four players fell within # 58.
    See this from the Globe,
"New England started the day with 11 picks and six selections (No. 23, No. 34, No. 47, No. 58, No. 89, and No. 97) in the top 100. After all the trading, the Patriots had eight picks in the top 100 - the four second-rounders and the four third-rounders (No. 73, No. 83, No. 89, and No. 97) with which it will begin Day Two.

Well. They got the players they wanted and then also added two more 2nd round picks.

Re: Moving Down in the Draft

They got Butler at #41, when they were projected to get him at #23. Same talent at half the price, and we get 3 second round picks in 2010 on top of that!

If that is not brilliant, I don't know what is.
