Moving Wilfork to End or 4-3

With Pryor Brace and now Lewis all suited to play NT and Mike Wright is our best option opposite Warren are the Pats planning on possibly moving Vince to DE to utilize his speed and atheletism or are the pats moving to more time at 4-3??

I would love to see Vince at end. He's deceptively quick, and I say draft man-boobs Mt Cody in the 2nd round to play the nose.

Here's how it likely goes Lewis (essentially replaces Green) and Pryor/Vince/Warren and who ever they draft as the elephant next to or behind Lewis.  Moving Vince to DE is about like playing Youkilis at 2B.

No, Wilfork is not an end. Yeah, he's super quick for a nose tackle, but he's not quick compared to a good 4-3 end.  BB is committed to the 3-4 and Wilfork was re-signed precisely to stay right where he is--in the middle of the line.  The Pats tried some 4-3 early in the season and they were bad in it.  They don't have the personnel for that.  Their ends just aren't fast enough to rush consistently from the edges.

Re: Moving Wilfork to End or 4-3

If Miami promises to put Jake Long at tackle and to put in a caretaker at QB, then put Wilfork on Long.  It worked last time.  All Vince has to do is stuff runs off tackle and let linebackers chase down the QB.

This tactic can be applied in general to quarterback-free teams who like to run big power backs behind one or more huge, strong, slow tackles.  It matches Vince's strength to their strength.  Any switchup that drives the offense nuts has some value.

Wilfork is more agile than the other defensive tackles, so against a running team he's the 350 pound defensive end.

a 4-3 end and a 3-4 end are two completely different players so your comparison is a bad one.  3-4 is a run stuffer and a great 3-4 end was seymour back in the day when he stuffed the run and got after the qb.  wilfork is to important at nose to move to end unless ron brace becomes a stud in his second year.  the nose has to be a stud for the 3-4 to work.

Wifork played some end his rookie year, of course he was younger and lighter, but he was pretty good. It was the St. Louis game and I was blown away that he was able to put some good pressure on the QB. The guy is a unique talent, if he dropped 30 pounds he could do it again.

Re: Moving Wilfork to End or 4-3

Yes, Wilfork has some mobility and versatility, but he is better used at NT where he can draw double and triple teams.  Occasionally moving him to DE against some of the superior OL's in the league could work, but only on rare occasions.  Finding a pass rushing DE is one position the a rookie can excel.  They would be better off drafting a superior athlete with more speed, than moving Wilfork.

The Patriots often switch between the 4-3 and 3-4, depending on who's healthy, and the offense they face anyways.

If they can draft a decent DE or even 2, it would pay huge dividends for the secondary.  I just hope Belichick will stray from trying to draft an LB, and try to turn someone else into a DE.  However, wouldn't it be interesting to see Volmer play DE in a preseason game, he's a beast.
