My Irish blood may not be Catholic but that doesn't mean I will root for a team with a historical anti catholic bias (my wife and kids were baptised in a Catholic church before anyone gets out of hand). -

I wouldn't know but they were there by at least 1740. Most protestant Irish are probably of scot descent in actuality. The vast majority of irishman who fought in our revolutionary war were scot-irish. The majority of catholics who fought were probably on the English side. I read a very good book about the British army of the revolutionary war which had a very large Irish percentage many of which were Catholic. -
