    O'Brien gone before the playoffs!

I'm confused...how is this beneficial to the team at this juncture of the season?

Hate to mess with continuity at this crucial period...Why is he free to go now and not at the end of the playoffs?

He won't leave til, after the season like Weiss and Romeo. He still has a contract with the Pats.

RT: @AdamSchefter: New Penn State coach Bill O'Brien will continue to serve as Patriots offensive coordinator for the rest of the season

Leaving before the playoffs would be a breach of contract and an absolute disrespect to the coaches and players who are trying to win a championship.  He will definitely be here through the playoff run.

BB would not have allowed him to interview if it meant hed be leaving during the season. This will probably be a distraction though. He'll still be working on recruitment to some extent.

His presence or lack thereof means nothing.

Another Pats coach that will try to do it on his own...  I have to wonder just why so many have left in these past years only to fail...  I don't have to name them but one has to think there is a better means to an end when they work under BB. Just my 2 cents...

Apparently we have some young-uns amonst us.

This process with OB, the interviewing process, and the subsequent hiring is Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in the NFL.  This is nothing new. OB, the Pats, and PSU are going about this in the USUAL way.

Smokenshot asks: "Why do the Pats coaches try to do it on their own?" These are prideful men that stand to make 10-20x their current pay. Pride plus a hefty raise are sufficient enticements.

Re: O'Brien gone before the playoffs!

Pats coaches have always been in demand. All teams want to duplicate the Pats success but none has a BB. Weis, Crennel and Mangini to mention a few failed badly after they left the Pats. O'Briens departure will hardly cause a ripple.

"Leaving before the playoffs would be a breach of contract "

Leaving aside the fact that it was a BS rumor:

people can quit, coaches with contracts get fired all the time and players too, the Patriots simply just wouldn't pay.  The Patriots can't sue him for damages, either, especially if they win the Super Bowl, because there would be no damages.  And the NFL won't let the Patriots sue for PR and legal discovery purposes.  They want to avoid a new Al Davis.

It never even seemed reasonable that Penn State would even ask him to come at this time while he is still under contract, right after the bowls are over and just a few weeks away from the season end, ESPECIALLY considering the bad light they are already in, they don't want to continue to look like jerks, even if this would pale in comparison to what happened before.
