    One Week Until Preseason Starts!

Okay CFL, not NFL.  But it's nice to have actual games to watch during these doldrums of the NFL year.  Maybe we CFL fans can start talking real football on BDC so we don't need 100 more threads about Rusty to tide us through until training camp.

Re: One Week Until Preseason Starts!

As much as I'd rather it be the NFL preseason starting, I am looking forward to watching some sort of football. The Riders are looking to be putting together a pretty decent team this year. Would be nice to have them play at home in the Grey Cup. I'm pretty happy that John Chick signed again with the Riders. Should be a great addition.

How are you feeling about a repeat from the Argos this year?

With Ray back and Milanovich coaching I feel pretty good. Some of the losses on defense hurt: The Armstead move is a bit bittersweet for me.  Glad to see him on the Pats but it's a hit for the Argos D line.

How hard are Rider tickets to get?  I have a couple of clients in Regina and tend to be out there a lot in the fall.  Would like to see a game at Mosaic sometime.

I'm jonesing for football..any kind of football that uses the "prolate" kind, not the round kind of sphere.

Saw some Aussie football on TV last week.  That's the way to make soccer exciting.  Replace the round ball with a prolate one and allow tackling.

I lived in Adelaide for a while and rooted for the Adelaide Crows. Aussie rules football is so awesomely different... Those guys are monsters. I remember seeing on the news one player had his eye gouged out during a game.

I recently purchased and drank a bottle of 40 Creek Reserve. Like most Canadian Whisky, it's a total bargain.

I'd talk CFL, but to be frank, I live in Louisiana. I've met people who think Canada is one of those socialist states by New York (and who also think I'm from Europe when I say I'm from New England) ... I tell them they are kind of right. So ... I'm not holding my breath on CFL games getting aired at local bars.

Plus, I tend to file Canadian teams under "enemy." Growing up so close to the border I always think Habs or Jays and just get turned off.

Rider tickets aren't too bad to get. The company I work for buys a few season tickets so I just ride free all year, so it's nice. They are adding new stands for the Grey Cup this year so I think it should be easier to get tickets this year. It's definitely a great atmosphere at Mosaic. Not much else to root for out here in Saskatchewan other than football so the province really gets behind it.

Do you go to many Argo games?

The 40 Creek distillery is just about 45 minutes from my house.  John Hall (the distiller) does some nice things.  Not sure you can get it in the states, but I really like his Confederation Oak Whisky.  He does a lot of small batch whiskies that you often need to go to the distillery to get.  I picked up some of his last batch of Port Wood Reserve (you had to reserve your bottles in advance and pick them up at the distillery).  That is very nice too.

What I like best about watching the CFL is observing how just a few changes in the rules create a different variation on the game. I prefer the NFL game because of its emphasis on defense, but I find it interesting to see how the larger field, the big end zone, the extra player, the backs in motion, the reduced number of downs, the lack of a fair catch, the single-point rule, and the different rules on lining up at the LOS affect the style of play.  The rule differences make the CFL game much more of a "space" game that values quickness and agility in its players.  While a lot of people just think of CFL players as guys who couldn't make the NFL, most of the players are good athletes, and lots of them are just guys whose size/skill combination isn't quite right for the NFL but well suited for the CFL game.  It can be an exciting brand of football, often with crazy finishes, where a team can score a lot fast. It's not the absolute machine NFL football is, but it's still fun to watch.

I go to one or two a year in the summer . . . I work a few blocks from the Rogers Centre, so I go after work sometimes.  I still have Pats season tickets, though, so once September rolls around, I devote my whole football budget to getting back to Foxboro to see Pats games.

I love the passion I see in Sask around the Riders . . . reminds me of Green Bay (where my wife is from).  The Rogers Centre is pretty quiet during games (the venue is way too big for the relatively small crowds the Argos draw).  Mosaic, though, seems like a great atmosphere. Stadium looks packed all the time and fans are really into it.

Lake of the Woods is a beautiful area. A lot of people from Wpg have cabins on that lake and a lot of Americans as well.

Great for boating and some areas I think are good for fishing.

Nice to se fellow Canadians on here! I always look forward to the Labour Day Game and Banjo Bowl every year against the Bombers. Hopefully they turn things around now with the new stadium. I always enjoy the rivalry.

Plus, I tend to file Canadian teams under "enemy." Growing up so close to the border I always think Habs or Jays and just get turned off.

have you ever been to Canada?  My wife and I own places in 3 provinces , Manitoba, Alberta and Nova Scotia   i could tell you my opinion about Long Island but like your crap its an opinion. I guess they miss the nonsense like when you call people mulatto, call people whitey and think that believing in Jesus is some kind of a handicap. How about going away and giving us pats fans the off season. At least you will hide when the giants are 3-6

Back to CFL, it's nice to have any football. I agree with Prolate that the CFL game is entertaining but I also pefer the NFL game.  I have season tickets to the Bombers and actually am going today to pick them up and check out our new stadium, the building of which was long overdue.

    [/QUOTE]

Yeah it's a great rivalry. I'm not sure the new stadium is gonna help any but at least it'll be a better venue to watch them if they continue to struggle. In theory they have to turn it around eventually....

Fine examples of what a "reasonable poster" this guy is, and yet, there are regulars that think he fits right in here while some lifelong Pats fans don't. (?)

Anyway, that aside, I'm not Canadian but my grand-parents were. Still have a boatload of relatives in PEI. Haven't been since I was a kid, but I'd love to get up there and see the bridge.

Re: One Week Until Preseason Starts!

We were in PEI two years ago and drove the bridge over to New Brunswick. What I found interesting is that we were told the majority of people who've lived on the island all their lives were in favor of the bridge whereas transplanted people were not.

The lifers liked the convenience of not being reliant on the ferry schedule whereas the transplanted people went there because they wanted to live on an island and so didn't like the direct connection to the mainland.

Beautiful place PEI, lots of nice beaches.
