    oooops... Should've tagged Talib

Posted on here the numerous reasons to franchise talib but the " wisdom" of waiting prevailed  ...  Dumb and dumber.   now you got nothing and your chief rival is better.

Couldn't see that coming?  This is the reason for the damnm franchise tag right?

Talib was not worth that much money. What you should be PO'd about is Verner coming in cheap and the Pats waiting on Talib to make a decision

Yeah but Verner is a small guy, not near as physical as some of the better CB's.  I think I would have rather had Talib.

Verner was a good acquisition by TB for his $26M contract, but Talib was a bad acquisition for Denver for his $56M, 6 yr, with $26M banked, especially given his increasingly battered body and persistent hip injury.  That contract will come back to haunt Denver in a year or two.

It would have been a mistake for the Pats to offer that kind of $ for Talib.  Too much risk and too much money to spend on that one position, with other good CBs on the market and other positions of need to fill.  Not good to put all your $ in one positional basket.

When you strike out so badly in the draft trying to fill D back needs, you have to expect dibilitating results.  Chung, Dowling, Butler and especially Tavon Wilson were regreatable wastes.

Denver is paying him 9m per year for 3 years ( guaranteed)  the rest of the years don't matter.

Second.  paying him 12 this year shoould be averaged with the 5 for last year since they got a bargain right...?   so you basically got him for 2 years at 17 mil.    THEN...  you still have the option of extending him or signing him if he continues to improve.

At the very least .....  you have a proven player in your system for one more year (still acontract year... meaning motivated)   AND you prevent what just happened.

MAJOR mistake to not have tagged him.

How did it work out for us the last CB we tagged. Pretty sure he did not show up when it matter most because he was afraid of being injured and lowering his valure the next year.

    who was that ...Ty Law?

Didn't play out that way for Welker....  they got the production and then moved on.  Talib still had a lot to prove health-wise and Patriots should have taken advantage of that and tagged him.  Dumb.  And now the worst case scenario is staring you in the face.

Now what...?  you are going to overpay for revis...?  Not likely.  Belichick is going to cheap his way  through the process and end up with little or nothing.

I agree that tagging Talib may have been a good thing.  If the Pats whiff on every possible CB replacement out there, this will look bad.  As we've seen for years now, not having a top flight CB has been a very bad thing.

No one could have foresaw the ridiculous amount of money corners are making this year.  Every single sports writer and analyst is nothing less than shocked right now, and so is BB I assure you.

No  Ty was not the last CB we tagged. I believe it was Assante in 2007

You're right about the market jump being unpredictable.  But when BB and Cesario see guys like Davis and Grimes (on March 6th) sign contracts that suggest that the market could get out of hand it should probably inform your negotiation strategy a bit.  I understand that the Pats have not historically been big spenders in day 1 of FA (or at all) and that it's still early, but it's clear that having a top CB affected the D's performance in a good way, and that is a priority position.

Well that kind of supports the view to tag him since it is based on last years salaries.   The tricky part is judging his value.... ?  Is he top five...?  Is he top 2..?  Some days it looks like his upside is ridiculous.

If yes then its ok to pay him.  Question is how many games will you get but even that seems like a good risk since the Welker hit was a freak play and not him coming up lame like before . ...  so maybe he had gotten past the hip problem.

    I can see it already...

AFCCG, Welker bumps into Talib on the sidelines... AND DOWN GOES TALIB!  DOWN GOES TALIB!
