Patriots agree to terms with TE DJ Williams

    From ESPNBoston.com:

The New England Patriots have agreed to terms with free agent tight end D.J. Williams, a league source confirmed.

The agreement was initially reported by CBSSports.com.

Williams, originally a 2011 fifth-round pick of the Packers out of Arkansas, was claimed off of waivers by Jacksonville in September after being waived by Green Bay at the conclusion of training camp.

Williams, the John Mackey award winner in 2010 as the nation's top tight end in college football, has nine career catches for 70 yards.

The Patriots had just two tight ends active against the Broncos on Sunday night, becauseMichael Hoomanawanui was forced to sit out because of a knee injury suffered in Week 11. It is unclear whether Hoomanawanui's injury will cause him to miss any further time.

Rob Gronkowski, the team's top tight end, played all 86 of the offensive snaps against Denver, the first time he has done so this season. Veteran Matthew Mulligan played 24 snaps in a reserve role, while the Patriots have also used fullback James Develin in a tight end role at times this season.

Because the Patriots have a full active roster at 53 players, a corresponding transaction will need to be made to clear room for Williams.

I hope the move that goes along with this is not that HooMan is gone for the season.  I thought he did a very good job in his limited time with us.

Hmmmm...very interesting...he's a "hybrid" TE/big WR type of player and likely to be used like the former AH.

this guy is no where near AH talent. if he had that talent he wouldnt be bouncing around. he may be same height/weight but not AH

I was thinking the same thing... this guy can't sniff AH's jock strap from a jail cell.

Apparently the Pats have released Marcus Forston to create a roster opening for Williams. The Pats lost 2 DT all in one day: A.J. Francis claimed by Miami and now Forston, when the team is already thin in that position.

Drafted by G.B I was surprised he didn't work out with Rogers throwning to him .  Hope he gets it together.

yeah, to be used like him you need WR speed with TE strength. and great open field running ability. highly doubt on #1 & 3

Not exactly great DT's to begin with. I understand you need to fill the position with just bodies but really nether guy would have been anymore help then another guy that might be able to pick off the street

Except that they were on the practice squad for a while and knew the system.

And given the lack of depth at the position and need for bodies if they were any good and knew the system wouldn't they be up playing and not on the PS. It's not like there were a lot of road blocks preventing them from moving up

Forston was Vetroning between PS and active team roster, supposedly if he is not claimed off waiver, he'll be back to PS.  A.J. Francis is a new get, so not suprising he was not playing yet. The concern is that he is supposed to be a very promising prospect, and he may be a source of information when the Pats play Miami later in December.

BTW, the Pats also waived Green, who likely will end up in PS again, but will there be a new signing for that roster spot?

The two roster spots created by cutting Forston and Green will be filled by Williams and likely Nick McDonald to replace the injured Hooman and Cannon. McDonald was in for a workout and the Pats are very thin in the OLine,

The only problem if that is how the open spots are filled is it leaves us with ONLY 3 DT's on the active roster...
More likely Sealver Silga gets the promotion from the PS, being the only other DT on the PS...Sealver probibly passed Forston on the deapth chart...sending Forston back to the PS.   McDonald is probibly headed to the PS if healthy enough to compete for a roster spot...

Right now the DT possition is desperately thin as Miami raided our only other DT from the PS...

Williams signing probably means Hooman is injured to a greater degree, Green was released because Dennard was able to play Sunday night, Cannon's injury prompted BB to bring Nick back for a tryout but there has been no signing that I know of, Forston was released to make room for Williams, losing A.J. Francis is probably so the dolphins can cull information on what defenses the Patriots are running when they play the Phins next month.  However it wouldn't shock me to see BB bring in more players tomorrow!

What happened to the Hawiian-Samoan DT we traded with the Eagles for just a few weeks ago?
