Patriots article from Houston Press - How 100% wrong is this guy

    http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2010/10/randy_moss_gets_traded_for_not.php

Some highlights of what the guy says

The difference with today's Moss trade and the previous two is that this one is being done in season. Further, the Patriots are actually a contender in the AFC. It's the "Bizarro Deadline Deal." In terms of impact, if this were baseball, this would be the Philadelphia Phillies trading Roy Halladay back to Toronto in late July for a minor leaguer. If this were basketball, it would be the Lakers returning Pau Gasol to Memphis for an expiring contract or the rights to some obscure Euro in February

Consider the 2006 through 2008 drafts. These are players who are now in their third, fourth or fifth years in the league -- in other words, your best young building blocks. From those three drafts combined, the Patriots selected 26 players. A paltry four remain with the team -- starting safety Brandon Meriweather, linebacker Jerod Mayo, kicker Steven Gostkowski, and reserve wide receiver Matt Slater.

By comparison, the Texans 2006 through 2008 drafts provide 15 players on the current roster (out of 21 selected), including seven starters, several key reserves, and three Pro Bowlers (Mario Williams, DeMeco Ryans, and Owen Daniels).

Indeed, this may be one of the rare trades where both teams actually are worse off now than they were before.

He has a lot of company at the crow eating festival.  Many in the media, many fans, thought the same.

Check the standings. Check the standings. We're rebuilding and going 14-2. You're rebuilding and....well, you're still rebuilding with those awesome 15 great players drafted.

Yeah, to be fair, this was written right after the trade. He wasn't alone in this type of assessment. Bet he's not so sanguine about his Texans today.

The writer was wrong.  That article is from October though.  Many, many people bashed the Pats for this move.  Now not everyone bashed the move, but I don't think anyone thought the season would tick along like it has.  Turned out Belichick was right.  Again.

The Houston Texans, the role models for drafting prowess and team building.  How nice.

Here is where he missed: The Pats traded picks belonging to that time span in order to get Welker and Moss. While Moss when out like a bum, he was awesome in 2007 and very good in 2008 and 2009. Welker has been superbe.

When you talk about the value extracted from picks, you cannot ignore how they were realized in trades.  Reiss covers this every year.

Can anybody remember who else the Pats picked up by trading picks from that time span?

"If this were Maggiano's, it would be trading the veal parmesan for a $5 Subway gift card."

This is the only thing the guy got right.  3 weeks ago I was in Indianapolis and I had the Veal Parmesan (my favorite) at Maggiano's and it was freakin awesome.  The Fried Calamari was excellent also.
