Re: Pay Talib..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if they can't come to a long-term agreement with Talib, they always can slap the franchise tag on him for next year, right?
That keeps him in NE for at least one more season--maybe during that time they'll come to an accord. Maybe not.
But at least they'd get him for another full season.
Something tells me that BB is smart enough to realize that a lot of the defensive schemes they've been cooking up since Talib arrived would not be possible without him. That certainly was not the case with Asante Samuel, who has a nose for the ball and makes plays, but isn't a great 1-on-1 cover guy.
History has shown that BB will pay the guys whom he feels are still young enough to contribute for several more years and whom he believes are integral pieces to the puzzle and cannot be easily replaced.
Welker, clearly, can be replaced--Edelman is already doing the job and a healthy Amendola also will help fill whatever gaps Welker's departure left; Ty Law was allowed to leave because he was asking for a ton of money AND he was on the downside of his career and coming off a serious foot injury; Samuel was allowed to leave because he was too much of a "me" guy and his skill set, while missed since he left, was not that of a true "shutdown corner".
On the other hand, Wilfork was paid because BB realized that he was the anchor of the D-line. Talib may fall into the same category as Wilfork in BB's mind, because he has exhibited true "shutdown corner" skills since arriving from Tampa Bay, and, more importantly, he's only in his fifth season and would appear to have a lot of football left in him.
