Ranking Players on the Active Roster

    These are not my rankings.

It's Pro Football Reference's list for 2013.  No metric is perfect.  This is designed to compare players across positions equally.  It tends to give greater weight to starters and players who punched the time clock each week.

Anything at 10 or above is a special season IMO.  Before you say that QBs will always get a better grade I can tell you that Richard Seymour got better grades than Tom Brady in the early years.

First, here are the league best for 2013:

    Player             AV Rating

    Peyton Manning*+ ·  DEN    19
    Richard Sherman*+ · SEA    19
    Louis Vasquez*+ ·   DEN    19
    Navorro Bowman*+ ·  SFO    18
    Luke Kuechly*+ ·    CAR    18
    Drew Brees* ·       NOR    17
    Vontaze Burfict* ·  CIN    17
    Jason Peters*+ ·    PHI    17
    Jamaal Charles*+ ·  KAN    16
    Karlos Dansby ·     ARI    16
    Cam Newton* ·       CAR    16
    Robert Quinn*+ ·    STL    16
    Philip Rivers* ·    SDG    16
    Tyron Smith* ·      DAL    16
    J.J. Watt*+ ·       HOU    16

There is absolutely no way that Wendell and Connolly are 2 of the top 10 players on this roster.

Like I said, it weighs starters and 16-game starters higher.  Both players met that criteria.

You and I know VW is more "valuable" than either, but he wasn't in 2013 when he was injured early in the season.

Re: Ranking Players on the Active Roster

Interesting, but I am always uncomfortable with comparing a center like Vasquez with a QB or someone from a different position. Vasquez is a heck of a player but is he really more valuable then Brees, Rivers , Newton or Brady. I distrust a lot of these player metric ratings for sports other than baseball. I still remember when McGrady used to get rated higher than Kobe Bryant in the basketball prospectus. Or Dwight Howard being considered the best player in the NBA. It's hard to quantify individual stats in team sports for non stat driven positions. Even running backs need a decent offensive line.
