Report: Colts' Mathis wants new contract, Mathis skips OTAs over money

    From ESPN, http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5221538.

Mathis has been absent from his team's voluntary organized team activities and a source told the Indianapolis Star that Mathis' absence is because he wants a new contract.

According to the newspaper, Mathis has two years left on a $30 million contract that he signed in 2006. Mathis is due to earn $2.3 million in 2010 and $2.4 million in 2011.

The 29-year-old Mathis, whose 9.5 sacks were second on the team to Dwight Freeney's 13.5 last season, has 63 in his seven-year NFL career -- all with the Colts.

If Mathis does get a new contract, he'll probably have to wait in line. The Colts are likely to give franchise quarterback Peyton Manning, whose contract expires after the season, an extension before the season.

So I guess the Pats aren't the only cheap team in the league with angry players. Doesn't Mathis want to just play out his contract like a good little boy? Doesn't he owe the Colt fans (all 6 of them who showed up at the airport to welcome the conquerors home) a hometown discount? After all he's playing with the GOAT at QB. I guess we'll see what Peyton leaves for the rest of the Colts once he feeds his family.

Will the Colts be able to field a good team in the future with all their money tied up in the QB? Did Polian's comments on how the defense lost them the SB factor into Mathis's decision. Is everything still OK out there in Indy?

I'd be worried if I were Colts fans......this is distracting for the team.

I just think it's funny that the Colts front-loaded his $30 million contract, and now that he's at the end where there's low payouts, he wants more money. At least the Patriots are smart about the big contracts they give out and escalate the pay at the end. It keeps the player motivated and lets the team cut them loose if they're not playing up to the contract.

Holdouts are never good, but they are a reality in the league.  Now I don't know how the colts can be considered cheap where Mathis is concerned.  He didn't mind the signing bonus on that $30 million deal.  If he had spread it out, then he would be paid more today and maybe happier.

I think some of the holdouts for teams have to do with the uncapped year, also.  Why not go after money when there is not a cap to limit it.

I don't know how unhappy Mathis is.  We'll really find out when training camp starts.  May be much ado about nothing.

Finally, fantasy you may get into a fight with TP on this subject - he says Polian said the reason the colts lost was because of the Oline, not the D.  You say Polian said it was because of the D.

For an effective arguement, pats fans need to get on the same page.  then again, Texas Pat will argue with anyone.

This is a real Ballbuster for Polian. The guy is worth more money but they gave him a chunk up front and he's not living up to his end of the bargain now.

I hope this doen't upset any team Chemistry as he is one of their leaders on defense. If he gets a new deal this could set an example for other guys on the team that are underpaid.

Cwiegman - Good call about the reasoning for the Pats backend loading contracts.

E - Signs obviously point to the contrary, but I am thinking this is going to be much ado about nothing.  Mathis really doesn't have a leg to stand on in this case, and he readily accepted a deal with a big initial payout.

Sitting out is only going to hurt him -

First he is significantly smaller than even Freeney.  If he wants to leave the Colts will teams be beating down his door to get to him?  maybe, maybe not.

Second, his absence does not help his situation given the fact that the Colts just drafted arguably the best speed rushing D end in the draft.

Well, I for 1, hope this does cause a rift in their locker room and thus he's not working out. Just wishful thinking...

Mathis better get his butt to camp - he's gonna need all the practice he can get if he wants to have any hope of not getting pancaked by Vollmer on every play come November.

well if they pay Mathis then they have to be careful not to pay him more than Freeney or they'll have even more issues.

Freeney won't mind because he'll take a hometown discount to make sure that Peyton (GOAT) can get paid and the Colts can remain competitive. Manning, Mathis and Freeney = Maddox, Glavin and Smoltz.

There's already a rift in the locker room. It was created when Polian blamed his OL for the SB loss...when everybody knows who was really responsible. The Mathis thing, coupled with the selection of Jerry Hughes (drafted partially in anticipation of contract problems with Mathis?), could add more fuel to the fire.

Here's the latest on Mathis: http://www.indystar.com/article/20100526/SPORTS03/5260354/1058/SPORTS03/Colts-Mathis-stays-away-from-OTAs

Tsk Tsk - You hope there is an actual rift, don't you?  You're sick of the colts killing the pats and are hoping for anything, ANYTHING, to stop the juggernaut, aren't you?

Yes...I do hope that Polian's defense of Peyton at the expense of his OL does foster resentment and dissention in the Indy locker room. As for "stopping the Indy juggernaut", I can always rely on Peyton to do that in the play-offs.

Didn't know going on four years without winning a SB qualifies as a juggernaut.

When conversing with an Indy fan, one must remember that all things are seen through the prism of the regular season. To view things any other way would be far too depressing...LOL!!

careful TP and Pete - over the past 5 years the colts have had more postseason success than the pats as well - ouch.  But do not let you stop from looking under rocks for any semblence of something that will make you feel better.

We we talking about your silly "Colts are a juggernaut" statement. You, as all Indy fans must do...will point to regular season performance to support your statement. But, how many titles have the Colts won in the past decade...other than that tainted one, stolen from the Patriots, in 2006?

LOL - If anyone would know tainted it would be you as a  pats fan, but you can't use your jealousy as a reason to put that tag on anyone else, let alone a colts fan.  You'll understand when you grow up.

Nothing tainted about that beautiful colts win.  Heck, they did it even while the pats were still taping.  Makes it that much more significant.
