So get it out of your heads. Every year we fans get rabid and foam at the mouth with the mega stars that are available, and dreaming of seeing the flying Elvis on their heads. How often has it happened? Exactly. And why is that? Well, allow me to throw some cold water on you and explain it. BB knows exactly 2, and only 2, ways to shop for free agents.
1. Bargain bin shopping. When the dust settles after the first couple of days and the feeding frenzy is over, he takes a look at what is left, and goes shopping for "value". This is his version of Filenes Basement.
2. Gamble shopping. Sometimes there are questionalbe, once mega stars with just enough gas in the tank to maybe get coaxed into reclaiming their glory as a long in the tooth vet, but for relatively safe money and possibly a late draft pick. This worked with Randy Moss, and backfired horribly with Haynesworth.
Rarely has BB ever strayed from this method of shopping. And while it irks us all to Hades and back, he's managed to give us a playoff caliber team for well over a decade now. Say what you will about the the Superbowls, Spygate, whatever. No one has even come close the success BB has in the salary cap era, and it is largely due to the fact that he doesn't go crazy and have to dismantle the team and start from scratch because of bad, over cap spending.
So, let's all curb our expectations and start talking about people who probably will end up on the team now that the big names are starting to come off the board.
