    Mike Reiss @MikeReiss

Patriots waive DL Ron Brace, a 2009 second-round draft choice out of Boston College, colleague @FieldYates reports. 4th on depth chart.

    Mike Reiss @MikeReiss

Waiving Brace could be an indication of practice squad promotion coming for DL Marcus Forston. Will see if that is next domino to fall.

In four seasons, Brace started just 7 games, and none since 2010. Tried him at 3-4 NT, 3-4 DE, and 4-3 DT. Just didn't work out.

    Re: Ron Brace waived

Glad to hear Malcolm Williams is back.  I'm always rooting for this guy.  Pats last pick of the 2011 draft--a seventh rounder from TCU who was a longshot to make the NFL.  From ESPN:

Being drafted in the seventh round by the Patriots: â€œThat was crazy, because my career at TCU wasn’t what I was expecting. I really didn’t play on defense. Coming out of high school, I was 5A defensive player of the year for the entire state of Texas. That was a little setback, and all of the people in front of me were people I was going to graduate with and they already knew the system. I ended up finding me a good role on special teams and I said, ‘Let me go ahead and run away with these special teams thing,' maybe have a good Pro Day and maybe something would happen [professionally]. I had a pretty good Pro Day and did four Canadian [Football] League tryouts, two Arena ball tryouts, some UFL tryouts. I was going to play football somewhere. There wasn’t anything I wanted to do other than play football to support my family. It was just a shock when Bill [Belichick] called me. He was like, ‘I want to be the first to welcome you to the Patriots family.’”

Expectations leading into the draft: “I didn’t think I’d be drafted. Not a chance. I knew I put out some good numbers on Pro Day, but I didn’t have any film on defense. It was just special teams. I didn’t think I was getting looked at.”

Perhaps, but joint injuries can be a real killer (like Bo Jackson's hip). Brace had begun to play some good ball last year until the elbow separation derailed him. Don't think he has ever fully recovered from it, and maybe never will.

    Re: Ron Brace waived

The front office has to answer two questions:

--  Is this guy worth anything more to us this season?

Brace will stay injured for the next five weeks.

--  Do we have any rights on him next season and beyond?

As a 2009 pick, Brace should be a free agent next season.  He's not at all a franchise player.  Simply by having his name associated with "Patriots", Brace will command twice elsewhere whatever he's worth to the Patriots, whether he's healthy or not, whether he's any good next year or not.

Yeah, I'm not saying he'll make a roster. But someone will bring him to camp for a look. Minimum salary deal I would imagine.

Wasn't he supposed to be kick of return specialist?  I don't even recall seeing him do it in preseason.

    [/QUOTE]

I think they tried him once or twice there, but mostly he's a kick coverage guy.  He's been on and off the 53-man roster over the past two years.  Kind of Ventrone-like.

He's one of those guys only Belichick would have drafted.  A guy who played special teams only at TCU.  Belichick apparently drafted him just to play special teams.  And, heck, he's stuck around for two years.

A waste of a roster spot. Should have kept Jeff Demps instead.

Seems like everyone else but the Pats knew Brace couldn't play.

He was actually a beast in terms of stopping the run as a 4-3 DT.  When he got on the field, our Run D was even better. The problem is, he never could get on or stay on the field and he was limited.

BB likes versaility, which is why he likes Francis so far.  He's had Cunningham and Francis inside and there's a reason why he's buried Forston on that PS all year.  Classic BB fine tuning for the playoffs.

    [/QUOTE]

You got to be kidding me?? "A beast in terms of stopping the run"<<<<What??

You must be talking about his time at BC, because the last thing this colossal bust was, was a beast stopping the run. This guy played as if he was on rollar skates his rookie year...I've never seen a guy that big get pushed back so quickly and easily. This fat tub of goo should be required to give back every red cent of money he got from this team - he is the definition of lazy. He had six decent games during his second season...that's it.

I have to agree with this.  I never like to throw the word bust around like some do but this guy was just that - a bust.

    He had his chances.

He can't seem to stay healthy.

I remember some time back that there was some questions  about his work ethic (staying in shape during the off-season) . No, I don't have any proof on this, just hear-say.

That being said, yeah, he is a "fat tub of goo."
