"Tape"? Do you mean youtube?
I have seen him play on TV -- and the problem with youtube for RBs is it only shows you highlights. I could make a highlight real out of any starter and they would look amazing -- especially running past frozen arm tacklers from San Jose State.
And I never said he "dances" at the hole and won't run ahead. Guess what? Neither did Maroney. I have seen him "not" kick it outside the guard before. Like most college backs his ability to reads holes is questionable.
What I am saying is that like Maroney, I doubt his ability to be an outside runner in the NFL, and I know his injury history and average bulk makes him a poor candidate to be an inside runner for an entire season.
I would even extend the comparison to show that like Maroney he is below average at getting down-field as a WR. That essentially means that he comes off the field in spread formations, OR like NE does with Maroney, Welker/Edelman come of the field for him.
As far as his injury history, don't hear it here. Just follow the player.
Every year he has been in college as a starter he has suffered a catastrophic injury. He missed his bowl game with a torn muscle in his shoulder three years ago. Missed half the season two years ago with a knee injury. And he missed the game against LA Tech with a concussion this year. That amounted to two season ending injuries in three seasons, and one concussion.
Both he and Maroney are the same size (6'0" and 218) and both of them run a mid 4.4. Both seem to get injured every season.
He has never gone more than 10 games without missing a game.
I think the only day one back this season with more injuries is Best.
That is a flag.
To be clear, I don't see anything in Mathews that would make him a bad prospect for the right team. But he is not a significant upgrade over Maroney.
He is Maroney part two. A guy who would like only stay healthy long enough to compile 800 yards a season and who is a spare part in an offense designed around spreading the field and using the slot.
