    Source: Vollmer-Pats deal expected tomorrow

By  Karen Guregian / Boston Herald   View My Profile

Right tackle Sebastian Vollmer is expected to sign a four-year deal with the Patriots tomorrow, according to a source. That means the team will have now locked up two of their own "Big Three" free agents.

While wide receiver Wes Welker got away to Denver, and repercussions of that are still being felt, the Pats did secure cornerback Aqib Talib for a year, and now, according to a source, Vollmer, for the next four.

Locking up Vollmer was a priority given he provides stability on the offensive line, and while Marcus Cannon may be promsing, there wasn't complete confidence in him stepping in as a replacement. Protecting Tom Brady is always a signficant element, and having twin towers Vollmer and Nate Solder as bookends at either end on tackle bodes well for the future.

The issue with Vollmer has been his health with a chronic back issue. He played through the trouble this season, missing just one game. Talks heated up during the recent league meetings in Phoenix, Arizona where Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Vollmer's agent Ben Dogra met. Apparently, those meetings laid the groundwork for the deal that is expected to be finalized tomorrow.

agree with quag that it would be nice to see them go after those players, but they also need another receiver....hopefully sanders or they bring lloyd back.

Time to add another CB, DT, pass-rush specialist and a WR.

Excellent news.  Wondering if Cannon continues to be used primarily as a tackle or gets some experience at guard too.  I wouldn't mind seeing him become a versatile back up or even a starter at right guard.

Yeah, that's a nice trickle down effect of re-signing Vollmer. I'd still like to see them draft an interior o-lineman but it's potentially less of a priority now if Cannon has some positional versatility.

Welcome back ya big crazy German! Now take care of your back in the offseason so you can crush some folks and get this o-line up to the force it could be...

Awesome, that leaves the Patriots with just 3 legitimate needs. Another CB(Draft)or 2, A DT/END(FA),and a WR(Draft and/or FA)or 2. Now that Vollmer is taken care of, I would like to see them resign Edleman as well. That would give them depth at the slot, and also at Punk/Kick return. That way there is both insurance for Washington for returns, and Amendola in the slot. Edleman should now be focused on to get locked up as well.

Well I'm glad because Cannon though talented is more suited too play Guard now the line only needs a small tweek plus they added Svitek to take over for Thomas which makes his departure a wash. They still have needs but not as many as before. Abraham and WR maybe another #2 CB in case the folks in Nebraska throw Dennard in prison for any extended time even though conventional thought says they just fine him and place him on probation.

Nice to have him back. A lot of people want more FA's here.

It will be interesting to see the numbers, not sure how much more the Pats can spend.

Ha--it's not your money Rusty, so no need to be too concerned.  My guess is the Pats got a decent deal because the market isn't that hot for tackles and Vollmer's injuries probably made teams hesitate.

    We'll probably know more tomorrow.

Good news. Does this mean Cannon moves inside and possibly starts at RG this year?
