    Some Straight Talk on Armond Armstead

        Pats' fans...lets not get too carried away with the signing of CFL player Armond Armstead: http://collegefootballmetrics.com/scouting/2013/DL_Armstead_Armond_RC.html. Still, it's a great sign that the Pats signed him immediately after their stinko performance in the AFC title game. Remember that, after losing the 2006 AFC title game to the Peytons, BB went ape-sh*t in the off-season, and built a 2007 juggernaut.          Armstead has the size...but does he have the heart? As we all learned, much to our chagrin, from the AFC title game against the Ravens...heart is in somewhat of a short supply in New England.

    and dont critque josh, look how many points were scoring (no matter how many times i suggested it would show itself most against better de's.

    1st thing i would have done after game. begin hunt to replace all coaches under bb with top of the league coaches (should have been doen long ago).

    Who are these top of the leagues coaches (presumably they have never had a bad game), and what if they are happy where they are?  Let's have some names.

    :)    Seriously, I don't think anyone is counting on this guy to be a Day 1 starter and 10 year Pro Bowler.  We're simply excited about a high-upside signing for virtually nothing and hoping for him to make the squad and be a quality player.  Of course he could be a bust, any rookie could.  He has the skills to be a very good player if things work out, though.  Time will tell.  Until then, I'm glad we got him.

    Why can't we appreciate that the Pats signed a guy with upside and leave it at that?  Fanboys: Armstead may not work out so let's not oversell him until he hits the field.  Negative guys: just because the fanboys think Armstead is the next Seymour doesn't mean the rest of us are too stupid to realise that he needs to come to camp and show he belongs here.

    Agree with your premise about the posters factions on this board.

    Bottom line with Armstead is he was identified by the Pat's to be talented enough to warrant a contarct. It will be then up to him put in the work in the offseason both physically and menatlly to be up to speed for OTA's amd mini camps and then training camp. It will be up to the team to make sure he is given the tools for this preperation.

    It will be then that we learn if he has the talent and can be a  fit in the Pat's defensive system. Most of the time it is the players mental make-up that determines his fit with a team. The NFL has seen many physically gifted players wash out because they did not have the mental or emotional capapbility to play at the NFL level.

    It's a big question whether Armstead has the heart or not.  That's why he went undrafted.

         Why don't you read my initial thread, and tell me where I've been overly negative? I applauded BB for the signing...but I caution those here who think that Armstead will be the second coming of Richard Seymour. Sounds middle of the road to me.

    We dont have the cap or Draft picks to do that again... NOR THE NEED... i believe that we are 2 or 3 key players away from a great team

    I tend to agree with you on that, auchhhhhh, perhaps "build" isn't the right word---although in 2007 but for AD and Sammy Morris the rest of the additions were receivers if i remember correctly as the core was pretty covered---but ya I feel like they are 2 to 3 players away, you're right about the picks but my understanding (thanks PatEng) is that there is more than adequate cap space THIS year. It will be intersting to see if BB targets a couple of the big names

    Armstead is not the next sure thing but he does represent a messiah.  Is he the one?  Can he get us the pass rush we need?  Lots of promise there.  A lot to work with.

         Yes, I do. BB is likely as frustrated and angry about the way the Pats' 2012 season ended as the rest of us. So...I expect some big changes. But, unlike in 2007, where BB went crazy adding offensive weapons for Tom Brady, in this off-season, he'll focus on defense. The signings of CFL products Armond Armstead and OLB Vega are just a start.

         The next order of business is to determine what he's going to do with his own key free agents...RT Sebastien Vollmer, and WRs Wes Welker and Julian Edelman. Whether he resigns C-Bass or not depends on what the prognosis is on Vollmer's back. His back injury has limited his effectiveness, and his playing time. This is a really tough call...because when Vollmer is healthy, he's one of the best RTs in the game. If he's healthy, he'll be resigned. If not, the Pats will be in the market for a replacement. 

         There's no way that the Pats will franchise Wes Welker, and pay him over $11mil. for the 2013 season. They'll either sign him to a reasonable 2-3 year deal, or send him packing. My guess is that a deal will be reached. At this stage of Welker's career, does it really make sense for him to go elsewhere, for a few million more? He and Brady are close friends. Welker stays, at, say, a 3 year, $20mil. deal, of which $12mil. is guaranteed. 

         Due to his upside, the younger Julian Edelman will be a more attractive free agent target than Welker. Edelman is also more likely to go to a bad team that pays, than Welker.

         Look for BB to add a safety through free agency...either Ed Reed or Dashon Golston, if they become available. Say goodbye to Patrick Chung...who fell behind Steve Gregory on the depth chart.
