    Spikes

I'm sorry, he still can't cover anyone. Great run suffer but why run when he's in the game. Time to move on.

Great run stuffer, couldn't cover my momma out of the backfield and she's been dead for a decade...

I like Spike, he seems like a tough dude, love how he can stop the run but he couldn't cover my one legged neighbor going out for a pass.  Hate to admit it but he looked horrible last night.  He was exposed big, big time. When he was working out on his own I thought his speed and quickness was what he was working on.  Boy was I wrong.

When you have Collins who can come in an out of the game Spikes is a pretty good option on the run. You now have the ability to play Spikes or Collins depending on opponent. If the opponent is more run heavy you play Spikes 2 downs, if they are more pass heavy you play Collins 2 downs. Works pretty well for my tastes

My point is why run when Spikes is in the game. We don't know what Collins can do yet?

His job isnt to cover. Thats why they drafted collins. I wouldnt single him out though, He corralled Reggie Bush for a minimal gain when faced with him in open space. Mayo gave up a 60 yard play after over running it. Lets just get this out there. NONE of our Backers can really cover. We have a converted lineman in Dane Fletcher who covers better than all of them. Mayo should be better because he has the speed. Spikes is slow after 5 yards. That aint changing. We only got him BECAUSE he was slow. Or else Spikes would have been a 1st round pic. How about singling them ALL out.

Teams know Spikes weakness, they will be passing on 1st and 2nd downs against him.  How are you going to sub Collins like that?  Collins was all over the place last night and not in a good way.  He has a long way to go.

Guys, not every starter can be a 3 down player. It's rare you see someone who is excellent all around. Sometimes you need specialists and Spikes fits into that specialist role. You put in a weaker run defender and teams will just run more up the middle. They aren't suddenly going to say "whelp Spikes isn't in anymore but lets keep passing". I say let them pass. A 1 dimensional team is easier to play against than a multi dimensional one

I like Spikes for what he is and recognize him for what he isn't.  I'm not sure that his mere presence on the field forces the opposition to be one dimensional but if it does then that's not altogether a negative thing.  Of course he's a liability in coverage but I think he makes up for that with his run stopping ability.

What I dont get is why is  he  singled out? He is a 1st round Run stuffer, he fell in the draft because a ran a 40 that was almost 5 SECONDS!  Why does everyone think he is supposed to cover? He has made great strides in that area but was never here for that. BB wants guys who can do many things so he has coached him to be better, but he is never gonna be great. Why cant our top ten pick who runs a 4.4(MAyo) stay with reggie bush or any other back out the backfield? , making ove 40 million?  See how that works? Can Hightower cover anyone? Do you guys want 3 Dane Fletchers out there? He can cover, right? Linebackers are tone setters who set the edge, stop the run.etc. BB wants them to do it all, it aint gonna always look good. Spikes does a lot considering where he was drafted , his salary and his speed. I need more from 1st rounders Mayo and HIghtower. I liked Hightower last week ,but he regressed again last night in his run reads and didnt attack the line. They were ALL on their heels.

Agree 100% the guy can play the run but why is he on the field, (Mr. BB),  when it's 2nd and 10-- 2nd and 12 etc--the guy is too slow to cover TEs and RBs out of the backfield and in a league that is moving in the direction of hurry up offenses, causing substitution problems, he becomes a liabilty. Not to mention on the last year of his rookie contract-he's gone after this year.

    Re: Spikes

I like spikes, he brings an aggressiveness to the D, he's a tone setter, has great instincts for the run game, powerful blitzer too. You don't see a team with a LB corps made out 3 down players, why can't spike be in there for the first 2 downs? I see it as the RB position you have your 3rd down RB when you don't have an all-around RB like a Peterson..You need those specialist. Now can Collins become that other 3down player next to mayo and Hightower next year if they don't resign Spikes? perhaps, but I don't view Hightower as a 3down player either, yet.

Like BB said, your role will be decided by what you make it to be. With that in mind, Spikes role is to be one of the best run stuffer in the league, I'll take that any time.

What you are saying is true. That said, most teams that are consistently among top Ds year in year out have 3-down LBs. Maybe that's one reason why the Pats D is where it is.

    Re: Spikes

I think Belichick has done a great job with hiding him in the scheme and keeping him out of too many of those situations where he'll get exposed badly. I got to say I didn't like the selection of Spikes, I watched a 15 minute video of his "low lights" and my god was it bad. I thought there was no way in hell this guy would be able to play in space in a NFL game, because there were people in college (who are working at Walmart now) that were blowing right by him and making him look like a fool. Belichick has limited that.

I like his instincts (although on occassion he chooses wrong and takes himself totally out of the play), but I'll take that over a guy who doesn't have any. He makes the game look easy at times with his nose for the ball, where as a guy like Mayo makes every facet of linebacker play look like the most difficult thing in the world.

    Re: Spikes

Perception from reading the above and a few other threads: Mayo stinks, Spikes stinks, Nink stinks, no one knows what Hightower and Fletcher are capable (but probably not much) of and Collins is an inept rookie. Last year the entire defensive backfield was horrible (they must have been, they gave up so many passing yards), and not not much has changed back there. Vince is old, we signed an old Tommy Kelly, and of the DE's, only Chandler Jones has any worth or potential. Do I have that all right? Oh no, woe is me, the season is lost...

My view: Pats fininshed 9th in rushing yards allowed last year, that will improve this year. Mayo and Spikes are a huge part of that. The secondary will be better just because they played together last year and know each other. Hightower and Jones are going to be BEASTS this year, and Collins will find his role. The Pats go 12-4 or better, the D improves greatly as the season progresses (and finishes in the top 8 in points allowed per game), they win the AFC East and possibly get a first round bye. If the young receivers gel with Brady, and Gronk comes back and is healthy for the playoff run, they have a great shot to get back to the Big Game.

but he still has a higher rate of creating fumbles per snap vs. Mayo
