    Sporting News' article on Spikes?!

Breer posted this blog earlier today...

Anyone find the article he was referencing?  I'd love to read it, and I posted on the comment section but didn't hear anything back...  Figured I'd take it to the forums!

tagandtrade, given his abscence from your list of linebackers,i have to assume you have jermaine cunningham, spikes' teammate at miami and a second round pick, slotted as a d.e.you may well see cunningham line up at both d.e. and olb'er.

Ummmm Spikes and Cunningham went to Florida, not Miami. He made a mistake not listing Cunningham.

Re: Sporting News' article on Spikes?!

These LBs can be a special group, yes most are unproven but there's something in common with all from comments I've been reading, they are all looking forward to the competition and getting playing time as a LB group.

You have a number of guys who have been leaders and do not take plays off.  Would like to see another veteran but I think this group can be very good.  It gives BB a lot of options and a nice rotation in any set.  In running downs you can have Spikes Mayo McKenzie and Cunningham on the field that's a pretty good option to have.  Add guys like Guyton, TBC, Davis, Nich, Murrelland Crable and there will be a great mix to the LBs.  Not a super star other than Mayo but a ton of solid players as a group they can be very very good.

I know he's not known but I want to see what Bruce Davis, 6'3" 252, can do.  He's a natural pass rusher and coming out in 2008 his scouting report said it would take a year or two for him to become a starting OLB in the league.  he's a wild card no one is talking about but has ability to rush and also stop the run.  I'm excited about the LBs and I do believe there will be a few rushers from the group and also they are good enough to be able to get creative with rushes not just from the OLBs.

Couldn't find the article at all. I don't think it exists.

    Hey Pats, how goes it?

I agree with Pats. This could be a special LB corps. We have a decent mix of veteran and rookie talent. I also think there is versatility in the group to mix and match. The only issue I have is some of this talent is unproven at an NFL level. We have more unknowns than knowns.

There are several folks that cover the Pats that have their opening day OLB's as TBC and Burgess. That worries me. Personally I think Burgess is mediocre, and TBC a good situational pass rusher, who has grown to be more of a 3 down OLB.
Neither strike fear in me, nor guys I have to gameplan against.

What does excite me is the middle. Mayo, Spikes, McKenzie is a great rotation on paper. Seeing Mayo and SPikes inside would worry me if I was an OC.

Good point on Bruce Davis. He was a 3rd round pick similar to McKenzie. He has the size the play OLB and can get after the passer. Perhaps a guy you might bring in on 3rd and long. If he, Cunningham and Crable can prove they can play, all of a sudden you got a stacked LB corps.

Don't mean to hijack this post as you were searching primarily for the sporting news article...but anyone want to take a stab at who starts at LB opening day, and who makes the roster/gets cut?

Obviously time will tell but I agree this LB corps has a nice look to it. Plenty of competition and plenty of strength there. With that type of depth they are bound to be able to put a solid starting group out there and Cunningham I think will be a beast. May take a little time to ramp up but I think long term he will be a stud.

I think McKensie has a leg up on Spikes early on...he used his time well last year and is itching to get on the field...he could really surprise and grab that spot next to Mayo and be a stud out of the gate...

Re: Sporting News' article on Spikes?!

I think McKenzie has a leg up on Spikes too because he was immersed in the playbook and meetings last year. But, based on Spikes comments, he is also familiar with this defense thanks to Urban Meyer.

I did not watch McKenzie play in college, but the one thing this defense needs that Spikes can deliver is attitude and physicality. He's a wrecking ball waiting to wreck. I want a guy like that (assumes he understands position) in the starting lineup come day 1. If McKenzie proves he has it, perhaps we might seem him outside?...Don't know..he is a bit small, but when asked what position BB has in mind for him, he was weirdly quiet. Because his natural position is inside, he coudl have said "inside LB". But he refused to answer the question at all.

Anyone have any thoughts on McKenzie and/or Mayo playing OLB?..Not ideal in size, but perhaps a better option than TBC and Burgess?...thoughts?
