I guess BB knew what he was doing.  Imagine that.  I do feel bad for Zoltan though.  Seems like a good guy.

We cut him over salary issues not performance. Pittsburgh media has been saying that he's been terrible.

Apparently he was bad on Sunday and the Steelers were growing tired of it.  They signed Mat McBriar in his place.  No return to Foxboro this Sunday for Zoltan, a class act.

How on Earth is this cap hell?  Mesko was terribad in Pittsburgh.  31st in gross average, 29th in net.  And it wasn't because of situational punting; he only had 3 out of 34 punts downed inside the 20, and 2 touchbacks.  Those are terrible, terrible numbers for a punter.

Mesko was on the books for about half a mil with the Steelers.  Cap room was not a factor.  I liked Zoltan, but average punters are a dime a dozen.  Allen is much better.

Love punter talk... But seriously this shows the fear of cutting a punter was completely unwarranted. Kind of silly actually. People were actually pointing out punting stats. Jeesh.

Hey, kickers are one position where it's pretty much all on you...hit a bad streak you're gone...absolutely quintessential capitalism in action....results do matter, and Mesko was pretty much awful for them all year...but then again, so have the Steelers...maybe they have to look for scapegoats early before they break out the pitchforks and lanterns.

    That's a BINGO!

Sorry, too much of a decline without a contributing factor of some kind...Of course being happy where you work can have an impact on your perofrmance.  It's all kinda a shame..

Sure is.  Gotta hate when you cut a good player to take a chance on a rookie...to save a few thousand.

But the football decision was correct based upon what we now know for fact

OK, not to be entirely dense here but how in the name of what-the-f*ck-ever does a totally correct football decision by BB that has resulted in a positional upgrade become negative? What was it excactly BB did in this case that warrants criticism? (Dicsclaimer:  still on my first cup of coffee)

The kid out kicked Mesko in camp and on top of that it made total economic sense to as it relates to the cap to go with Allen. That being said BB must have just got lucky becasue as most posters in this forum point out they are infinitely smarter than him based on their vast superior knowledge of football, better scouting departments available to them and their vast superior ability to break down film. Get with the program our GM sucks.

Turned out to be the right decision because Allen has been great (after a few shakey kicks near the beginning of the season).  But let's not forget that Mesko was a pretty good punter for most of his time here.  BB even used a fifth round pick to get him (quite a high pick for a punter).  So cutting a proven punter who you had invested a lot into for an untested rookie could seem a bit risky, even if there were significant cap savings.  Interesting to compare the Mesko decision with the Gostkowski one.  There were quite a few threads about how Gost needed to be cut because he was awful and cost too much.  Now, with Allen and Gostkowski, we have two of the best kickers in the league on the team (and given our offense's problems, we really need good punters and kickers!).

Yeah, my sarcastic rant really wasn't about Mesko/Allen per se more of a general indictment of the tenor on the board.
