    Stupid Football

Several plays stick out in my mind from yesterday.

#1 McCourty PI on 3rd and 18 (on a five yard slant!).  If DM just stands still it's 4th down and the Skins punt.  Instead it turns out to be a TD drive.

#2 Hernandez drop in the end zone just before halftime.  It wasn't an easy catch but he had his hands cupped (thumbs out).  He dropped a TD pass last week (or maybe the week before) the same way, with thumbs out.  It's really bad technique, especially with a guy who throws as hard as Brady does.

#3 No safety help on the first long pass to Stallworth.  McCourty actually played him correctly but Slater was just standing there and made no move to help.  It's not Slater's fault that he doesn't know how to play safety but someone in the organization must be able to do it.  Having a receiver cover a slot receiver makes some sense but this doesn't.

The Patriots and their coaches are playing stupid and if it doesn't stop soon the final result of this season is going to be very disappointing.

    Re: Stupid Football

The one's that stuck out in my mind were:

     - BJGE sweep on 3rd and 1. Why run a sweep with your slowest player who consistently gets 1-2 yards on power dives. You play to his weaknesses (can't quick cut and slow) and minimize his strengths (his power and ability to fall forward)? Makes no sense

    - 3rd and 2 inside the 10. The skins were keying off the pass all game in the red zone. The Pats didn't even attempt to develop a run game. When you have the chance to get a fresh set of downs inside the 5 you take it. Why are you passing into the end zone and not going for the 1st. This drives me nuts about this team. It use to be, get the 1st and keep the drive going. Now, it's d@mn the 1st go for the TD.

    - Inside the 10 Brady int series. All game inside the 10 the Skins were prepared for the pass. Twice before the Pats were in the same situation and passed on 2nd and 3rd down to end up with FG's. With less then 4mins in the game why aren't you just running the ball up the gut and seeing what can happen. You kill clock and most likely end up with a FG to seal the game. Makes no sense to continue to ram your head into a wall for the 3rd time and hope this time you break through.

    - The trick play. Ok so the play was really well executed and it's rare you see a right to left pass from a left handed passer but the ball was so under thrown the only way it shouldn't have been int'd or at least knocked down is if there was no one within 20yrds. Did the S's fall asleep and not notice the guy cutting across the field?

Yeah the sweep was a dumb call for BJGE. He's the power back. We have Woodhead for speed.

Very good points.  Number 1 was particularly disturbing because lack of technique met lack of game situation awareness....

That pass to Faulk out of the backfield, when he got clocked on a 1-yard gain.  What was that about?  Was that a missed block?  Was Brady having another bad play on a day of bad plays?

And what is with Brady overthrowing Woody out of the backfield, every game?

Agree about the stupid run to the left on 3-n-1.  STUPID.

There were other stupid plays.  Wilfork!  What was he thinking?  And was it Mayo that dove at Grossman's knees? (Although the 'Skins dove for Brady's knees several times w/o consequence.)

Shotgun on short yardage plays?  You've got to be kidding me.  Whose idea was that?

Stupidly loose DB coverage, whereby everybody stands around and watches a receiver catch a ball before moving to tackle him?

And what was with the lousy tackling?

Because of all the stupid plays, stupid play calls and stupid penalties, what should have been a blow-out turned into a heart attack game.  Grossman has his good days, and yesterday was one of them.  He was clearly the QB on the field for the day.

Take away a couple of outstanding plays by Gronk yesterday and the Pats lose.  What are they gonna' do if he gets hurt before or in the post-season? 2009 all over again?  He has been getting clobbered in every game and has come up woozy in every game.

    Re: Stupid Football

Clock management at the end of both halves was not sound. First half, 3rd and goal under 20 seconds, timeout left, they allow the clock to run and get off a hurried play (drop by Hernandez) with only one second left. No reason not to take the timeout and avoid having to rush. Almost Jason Garrett-like, fortunate to have one second left and be able to kick the FG.

Second half, why not use your timeouts in case they score? I saw Belichick's explanation and it was borderline incoherent. Certainly not convincing.

As stupid as that play was, you've got to admit it was pretty funny.

It looked like something straight out of professional wrestling. You could actually see Wilfork make the decision to lay the wood instead of simply touching the guy -- for whatever reason -- with the official standing right there, staring right at him.

As for the rest of it, I was most bothered by the pass interference by McCourty -- not because they gave up the 3rd and 18 (which we should all be used to by now) but that play was a clear indication of a guy who is not tuned into the situation or where he is on the field.

All in all, it was an ugly game in which you take your win and get out of town . . .  but when the immortal likes of Dan Orlovsky (or whatever his name is) and Rex Grossman are lighting you up, I shudder to think what will happen when the Pats face an actual NFL offense.

Thankfully, we won't have that problem next week.
