Watching bits and pieces of Super Bowl 39 will make it hard to watch given that it's like 10 times better than what we've had in a while!

No wonder Branch wanted to get paid..he was killer back then.
Also, the debate about Welker vs Troy Brown...even the tail end of his career it is obvious Brown was better.
Finally watch the little run by TB to get a first down 2nd half 38. Sure could have used that vs. the Ravens.

It was harder to play QB back then, too. It was. You could get away with things easier on defense as compared to today.
That's why QBs like Roethlisberger, Eli or now Flacco are considered elite. They're not. They just benefitted from officials being told how to enforce the rules to favor offenses.
None of those guys will be lighting up any record books.
A guy like Matt Ryan would really suffer playing in the earlier 2000's more than anyone, IMO

People don't consider them "elite" because they put up monster numbers. They're considered "elite" because they're clutch. They just seem to play better when the stakes are higher.

Well, again, it's easier to be "clutch" now because the league promotes offense. The context is important.
Brady does it all. He lights up the books and also understood what to do in the tougher era. Manning didn't know what to do as QB while Brady did in the harder era.
It's about intelligence.
Can't really compare across eras. Defenses may be more complex now than they were 10 years ago. I don't have the stats either, but it wouldn't surprise me if the average 40 time of defensive players or other measurables are greater now than they were 10 years ago.
