I think for a 3rd QB to make the team he either has to have a lot of talent or contribute elsewhere.  I liked him as an H-back, TE, emergency QB but as far as I can tell the team has no plans to use him as anything but a QB.

I know the team has kept some pretty raw 3rd and even a 4th QB's before but that was when there was a true competition for a number two.  I think the BU spot is firmly locked up.

It was a typical Tebow performance, the good, the bad and the ugly.  But Brady is a pocket passer, and ideally the backups could carry the same offensive plan, or at least similar.  To make Tebow work you would have to change the offense.  It could be done, but why bother.

BU might be locked, but not because of anything we have seen on the field. Mallet has never done anything actually seen to match the fan hype of him.

Mallett doesn't impress but unless there is a QB I don't know about I would put his number 2 slot locked up above Tebow.  I always found Hoyer more impressive.
He did just get outplayed by Tebow. Tebow is just finishing his first camp with team. Mallet has had years in the system.

When Josh McD drafted Tebow in the first round in his first year at Denver, he was widely criticized and mocked. All coaches have egos.  McD will probably use whatever input he has to try to keep Tebow around if he thinks he is teachable, and there is enough wriggle room in the roster. McD will want to make Tebow his project to be developed into a serviceable NFL quarterback. If he can accomplish that, McD will redeem his decision and have people who criticized him eat their words.

If Tebow makes the 53-man roster it surely will not be based on this performance in the preseason which has been simply pathetic.  Yep, he threw 2 TD passes last night but against what level of competition.

Perhaps BB has something in mind for him but if the descision is based on what I've seen in the preseason, NFW.

    I say yes.

Did you see how liked this dude is on the sidelines?  Everyone likes him, Kraft too! BB even showed a bit of a smile after the final TD.   I think he adds a big boost to the whole positive vibe, locker room chemistry.  Great example to the rookies.  Not a very good passing QB but he is a winner, hard worker, and a winner.

OOO everyone likes him. Yes, that IS impressive. THat is the way to make a football team. That is the way to field a SB winner.

If he makes the team it will not be because his is well liked. But I do admit I just do not get how he makes any team. He is one terrible QB. If they could remake his mechanics he might be better but I do not see it.

Of course they will keep him. That was likely the case the day they signed him.

Use your heads. He's McD's boy. Giving the 53rd roster spot to McD to keep his 1st round pick in the NFL is a tiny price to pay to ensure the OC remains happy and stays here.

What's BB going to do, boot the guy the owner praises profusely and his OC loves; to keep some street scrub? LMAO

Kraft said something like that prior to Welker going to Denver.

BTW, Great freaking avatar!!  Where did you get it?

$$$$ was a factor in the Welker deal. TT is only about the 53rd roster spot (which many here tremendously overvalue), the money is a non-issue.

Whether in the next couple of days or next year, one day the one and olny factor will be that TT sucks. Nice guy. But he is not even as good as Mark Sanchez. He is just a horrible QB.

Their offer was a slap in the face, you know it.  I know it.  We all know it!!

Ok, get this..... The Pats have signed low risk / high reward players.  If they sign Tebow will this be the first time they sign a low risk / no reward player?  Hahahaha!!

I like Tebow, for some selfish reason I want to see him make the team but from a talent standpoint he shouldn't.
He just outplayed Mallet.
Mallet has been bad this preseason but he was a bit better last night. In any case, no, TT didnt outplay anyone. He could not read the Ds (how many sacks does TT have to take before you recognize how inept he is). He took forever to get release the ball when he was not losing yards. He threw more horrible (not bad... horrible) passes than catchable ones. He threws picks. His biggest play was made possible becuase of a blown tackle, not a great throw.

You can not like Mallet's play but get real. TT is no Mallet. And Mallet may not be a starting QB like we had once hoped he could be... but at least Mallet has a chance to be good enough to play for the Jets!

I think he does stay, because I think this is probably Mallett's last year here, probably traded in the next offseason. That will give Tebow another complete year to work on mechanics with McD, and the Pats will draft another backup QB next year. If Mallett is traded, Bill won't want a roster without some backup QB experience.

Look, it's not like he's gonna actually play. He'll be one of the 7 standing on the sidelines in street clothes with a clipboard each week...

Have no idea and have learned never to try to guess what Belichick will do with his roster (anyone guess he'd trade Seymour for instance?).  But here's what I think would be the arguments for keeping him or not keeping him:

    • Argument for not keeping him:  He's a terrible passer and not a long term answer at QB, and BB would probably rather have a young practice squad eligible guy (with more upside potential) to be the third guy so he doesn't have to waste a roster spot for a third QB.
    • Argument for keeping him: BB is not 100% comfortable with Mallet as the back up and thinks Tebow would be a better option to win a game if Brady were to get hurt and/or BB thinks there's a role for Tebow as a specialist running QB.  Given all the new, young receivers there's a possibility he thinks Tebow could be used in short yardage situations where we may not have full confidence in our receivers and are going to have to run.

I was thinking that last night. McD has done a decent job, but I've never been that fond of him prior to him leaving for Denver.....and he hasn't changed much since coming back. My only criticism in running the offense is that he and BB hasn't found a solution for beating the likes of the ravens, giants, 49ers..

I am not a huge Tebow fan, but he does have some value. If you think back on those games he won with Denver, most of them were keep the game close and pull it out late in the 4th quarter. When the defense gets tired is when he does his best work, its when his running ability shines and the glaring lack of ability as a passer gets diminished. Clock Killin' Tim Tebow??

I have to say one thing about McDaniels. I do think he has an eye for WR talent and I think this WR class brought in is partially due to him. Prior to this class the Pats haven't drafted a good WR since Branch but McDaniels come back and it looks like they might have 3 keepers.

if tebow actually makes progress, yes, Mallett becomes more tradeable.  Plus, it gives the Patriots an edge to possibly re-sign Mallett w/ a home town discount if Mallett knows he's expendable?

Also, like other suggested, the Pats may want to keep some guy with character and leadership after the stench of Hernandez. Kraft says he is pulling for the guy.

And if development of Tebow into a legitimate NFL QB worked out, either he or Mallett can be traded down the road for something. We know that neither one of the two will get the team the same return as Cassel, but to BB, seeing whether a reclamation project may work out is a low risk, low cost investment.

Yes, it will be a huge factor.  Why? And why is he liked?  For the same reasons he makes the team.  He is a hard working guy, a proven winner on the field and in life, great, great determination and positive attitude, great example to the rookies, great locker room guy. All of that goes a long way and people can not help liking that type of person especially when he bring such a positive vibe to the team and the people around him.

I did meet Tebow a couple years ago and I must say it's amazing to see how everything just seems to change when he is around.  I can't describe it, but I certainly understand whjy he has such a huge following and why people like him.

This argument I hear a lot and wonder why it's made. There are a ton of character guys on the team currently. Slater, Brady, Wilfork, McCourty all come to mind instantly. As for the leadership I always believe you have to lead on the field. You lead by what you do on the field, everything else is a Rudy type leadership which when you're battling in a game who do you listen too, the guy fighting in the trenches with you or the guy in street clothes with a clip board and the pom poms? Now Tebow is a great guy and the locker room clearly loves him but do you use a roster spot on what is essentially a mascot/cheerleader because he's everyone's buddy? The one thing we do know is after 3 years in the league Tebow hasn't improved. Generally after 3 years you know what you have in a player and given his learning disability I'm not sure Tebow is capable of developing past what he already is. Honestly he looked lost last night standing in the pocket and only looked comfortable when he tucked the ball and ran. The problem is running QBs will never be successful in the league. Even Vick who might be the best running QB ever didn't have great success and his best season came when he stopped looking to tuck the ball and instead stepped up to buy an extra second and look for the open receiver.

Re: Tell me now!! Does Tebow make the 53 man Roster?

Sorry TFB12, but, while locker room presence is an important thing, that aspect is not about being liked. It is about making the team a stronger team. Not a more enjoyable team. I strongly differ with you on this... and it is not about whether I or anyone else likes him. I differ because I do not see his value.

STILL - I see that if we keep him this year the Jets have to pay more than we do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So if BB wants to stick it to the Jets, which is beneficial because they are division rivals, then there is some additional value.

And STILL - the fact that I remain surprised he was picked up here and surprised that he is still here... in spite of his latest HORRIBLE showing (he had 3 good 5 yard tosses - hard to call them passes... and his only two major positive throws were made by a bad tackle and horrible position by the DB on a BAD throw for a TD..... without those two plays he was comepltely horrible. And neither of those throws was especially good... and those picks and SACKS.... how many sacks does a guy have to take before you all get it??????????).. and still I do not really get why he is still here. So I do not assume I am right about whether he remains. Only that I am right that he is one truly horrible QB.

Kordell Stewart, Vince Young, Daunte Culpepper, Michael Bishop... they are all physically gifted athletes who have trouble making second reads.  They were all not accurate, but speed, arm strength and elusive running kept them on rosters.  All of these quarterbacks have one glaring problem like Tebow... they are poor, slow decision makers.

I think if they kept Tebow, they would have to invent an offence for him.  He reminds me of Drew Bledsoe when he stands in the pocket... but he would do much better in a system like the 49rs where his running would be unleashed.
