Thank God we didn't draft this punk:
A lot of people thought the Pats needed to draft a WR. And a lot of people, for some reason, thought they would go after Dez Bryant. When it came out that the guy was about as bright as a bag of rocks, I knew there was no way Bill would target him. Apparently, stupidity isn't Dez's only issue. Turns out he's a grade A punk. He is in the news for refusing to do what all rookies do: take part in "hazing." He refused to carry a verteran's pads
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/07/25/dez-bryant-wont-carry-roy-williams-pads/ He will accomplish two things with this little stunt: All the veterans will hate him and be rooting for him to fail. He has become an outcast immmediately. Secondly, they will screw him twice as hard. They are going to get him. The whole idea is to show the rookies a little humility. Like Williams said, they are going to take it up a notch. Now it's personal. He's disrespected all the vets with this move. And I can guarantee you if he doesn't learn his place, at some point in a preseason game, one of the vets will "miss" a block that gets Dez lit like a Christmas tree. Hopefully he isn't injured. But you can't say he didn't have it coming. He can play along now, or he can play along later. It's just a question of how hard he wants to make things for himself. And anybody that wants to defend Bryant for "sticking up for himself" has never played football and just doesn't have a clue as to how teams work. This guy is a joke. I am so happy the Pats didn't waste a pick on this arrogant antisocial loser.

Good for him it's about time someone stepped up and put an end to this BS! Hazing isn't allowed anywhere else why should it be allowed in the NFL? Seems a few years ago someone tryed to punk out Giant rookie Jeremy Shockey and got his face punched in and his lights punched out for it.Good for him as well.

Carrying someone's pads is "hazing"? That's the other thing that is wrong with this.
A little good natured "hey, carry my pads" is not exactly "hazing".
The kid just isn't very intelligent. Period. NEXT

That isn't what happened with Shockey. In fact Shockey ended up singing his fight song and then Mouthed off to one of the Vets. The Veteran then attacked Shockey.
The "Fight" lasted all of 5 seconds and nobody got their face punched in. I remember the incedent well and also remember that he wasn't a popular guy on his team either being disliked by many. Shockey also got into a fight with Drew Breeze last year at practice. He's a heck of a team mate
Here's a link to the story.

I remember reading Shockey refused to sing but this link says different. The point is as a fan I could care less if a guy refuses some kind of hazing. If the guy shows up to work and produces on the field then that's all that should matter. If Roy Williams is crying over Bryant not carrying his pads I feel bad for Williams since he should be more concerned about becoming a productive WR. Bryant was the 1st top 32 pick to sign and seems to be working hard showing up to practice early. Those 2 things to me show he's taking this job seriously and wants to prove people wrong. The fact this guy held his cool after being asked if his mom was a prostitute or something to that liking should have erased some doubts about his maturity but its amazing he's still viewed as a problem player. What did Miami's front office get for asking that question anyway? I don't remember any fines or job loses for that incident.

That's because it made for a better story to tell Shockey's side at the time instead of the whole truth. As far as the other stuff, I was pointing out that guys like that aren't favorites in clubhouse as was suggested above. I'm not of the opinion that teams should be fined for pushing the Buttons of a kid in an interview but that's just me.

From Wikipedia:
Professional career A fourth-round pick of the New York Giants (#105 overall) in the 2000 NFL Draft played 5 seasons for the New York Giants and two for the Carolina Panthers.
In his rookie year saw action in 11 regular season games and was inactive for five games because of an ankle injury. Appeared in all three of the Giants postseason contest, including Super Bowl XXXV.
Short's biggest claim-to-fame may be his infamous 2002 training camp cafeteria fistfight with teammate Jeremy Shockey. The two players brawled after Shockey, a rookie, refused to sing his college fight song—a training camp hazing ritual.[1] [2]

I'll take an eye witness sports illustrated story over wiki pedia which anyone can go in and edit. I'm glad it backs up your version though. Not to mention I remember ESPN doing a story on this when it happened and saying exactly the same thing SI said. That's why I looked it up when I read your post. The reason the fight started is because after Shockey sang the song he made his comment .I.E. The fight doesn't happen if Shockey doesn't sing the song.
If you don't like the hazing stuff that's your right. The wikipedia version of Shockey's fight is an urban myth at this point.

This is about Jerry Jones. Or, rather, Jerry being such a control freak and camera wh0re he had to hire Wade "cream cheese" Phillips, the most gutless coach in football, to coach. Anyone else would have busted the kid RIGHT AWAY
