As most have mentioned, the game was not a very good or efficient preseason game at all.
I don't really recall BB scratching so many starters for Game 1, however. Brady does not need to play much at all, so that's fine, but I was surprised how many of the defensive starters did not get any reps. So, I would suggest whoever is not being very bright in terms of kneejerking analysis, to settle down and try to be mature for once.
Once I saw Mankins not starting and this Devey character lined up next to Solder, I realized by Solder had a bad night. He starts slow every year and Mankins wasn't even there. Some hack was playing. Check.
Next, I can see why people are impressed with Butler. I highly doubt someone who competes that well and can tackle can be stashed on the PS. I wonder if BB will keep an extra CB and then thin out the Safety group with pointless players like Ebner? Why not keep an extra CB this year with one of them masquerading as the 4th Safety? Maybe Arrington or Ryan can show at Safety and that's the 4th Safety instead of wasting Ebner this year. We have plenty of good tacklers on STs.
Another guy who had some good reps was Fleming at MLB. Not a guy you want starting by any stretch, but I could see him possibly making the team.
The takeaway for me is this team is so loaded and ready to go with its starters, that it's a free for all for the 2s and 3s to get reps and battle it out for final spots, which is a good thing.
It also smells like the starters had such good work in during these sessions with the Skins, there was no point in playing in the game at all, minus guys who need some reps like Wilfork and Kelly, etc.
Lastly, I thought Will Smith showed well and the supposed poor play by some wasn't as bad as being sold on here. Garropolo reminds me of a smaller Rodgers a bit. He moves pretty well in the pocket, can run a bit and he just needs reps to get up to NFL speed to be able to go throw his progressions quicker. I felt Mallett was as much as a victim of a poor OL and lack of continuity there to get comfortable, more than his skills being poor.
The Skins clearly got up for this game as everyone does against the Pats and this is a wake up call for them in preseason to be ready when the game starts. I fully expect a rising group of backups in the next few games.
I knew some of the dramatic and negative descriptions would be over-sold on here when I read them and that's the case after watching the game. While it was not a good overall showing at all, there are still 3 games left for these backups to shake the rust off with the starters getting in their reps to get tuned up.
