Backup plan for having lost Smith and Yeatman, and maybe keeping Crumpler's seat warm.  I don't think Dan excels at either receiving or blocking.

Apparently not since he was traded from Detroit and cut by a talent-lacking Broncos. At the same time, Belichick has incredible insight from his Gronkowski: what his brother can and cannot do, what he's like personality-wise, etc. Who better to learn from than his own brother? Plus, it's low risk.

6'5" 255 lbs. - about average for an NFL TE.

If BB truly has brought him in, then he's probably got something.  If not, he'll be gone soon.

Re: Two Gronk TE's for the Patriots?

First thing that needs tooo be addressed is,is this a roster move or just a practice squad move? If this is a roster move then someone is leaving but if this is just a practice squad move then I'm OK with it.

Don't think he's practice squad eligible; too many games on Broncos 53-man roster.

So he's our consolation prize for Smith and Yeatman?...I have seem him play, and I think both Smith and Yeatman have more upside, and that's not saying very much. There is clearly a big drop off in Gronktalent, from our Gronk to the rest of the Gronk herd.

Re: Two Gronk TE's for the Patriots?

    Done deal!

Patriots agreed to terms with TE Dan Gronkowski, formerly of the Broncos.
Double Gronk power in New England. Dan is more of a blocking specialist than his phenom brother Rob, managing just eight catches for 65 yards in 12 games last season. Rob is locked in as an every-down tight end with Aaron Hernandez in the "Joker" role. Dan's snaps will be few and far between. Sep 6 - 2:58 PM

Now they should ship Hoyer to the Colts for the thrid one and then they can combine to form the Gronk Megazord, which is 10 feet tall and runs a 3.2 40 yard dash.

Re: Two Gronk TE's for the Patriots?

I called it on the money three days ago.  Maybe I'm getting pretty good at this.

    http://www.boston.com/community/forums.html?plckForumPage=ForumDiscussion&plckDiscussionId=Cat%3aSportsForum%3a9690Discussion%3a0f9b2af3-3b85-4b69-9b5b-7fa23e8c9d0f

Dan Gronkowski has one advantage that Yeatman and Lee Smith don't have.  He's not a rookie.  He can pass-block.  Other than that he's not going to outrun any linebackers downfield for the ball, but I suspect that he might outquick a linebacker on an inside-outside route over the middle.  He's a pretty good run-blocker but he's no brother Rob.

Maybe a really good tight end will show up next year.  Maybe Lee Smith or Yeatman will get kicked off of their new teams because right this month they're as useless as opposable thumbs on a goldfish and those 53 roster slots fill up fast.  In that case, they each can choose which practice squad they'd like to be on, if BB will have them.
