Unbelievable fined by NFL. Do you agree or not?

Just spike the ball in the endzone to celebrate the TD from Gronks and he got punishment $7500.00 by the NFL league.  He didnot hurt anyone or saying any bad to the opponents.
It is ridiculous and bias to the talented TEs of the Pats by the Commissioner of the NFL.  I think Gronks should appeal to this fine.  This kind of money he can donate to any charity instead for the NFL league.
This is a discrimination fined by the NFL to the talented NFL player of the Pats.

You can spike the ball.  The penalty and fine were for taunting because the Ref felt he did it right in front of the defensive back who he scored on.   He can certainly appeal it and make his case.

Re: Unbelievable fined by NFL. Do you agree or not?

    It was tacky at best.

The player Gronk beat was still on the ground when Gronk turned around and spiked the ball literally in his face. If Gronk didn't turn around and spiked the ball towards the front of the endzone not an issue it was that he spiked it feet of the opposing CB still on the ground. Now it could have been a harmless mistake by Gronk that he thought maybe the CB got off the ground by then or that he wasn't thinking (my guess) or it could have been he got caught up in the moment, knew the Jet was there, and decided it needed to be done. Either way the penalty was the right call. Gronk should no better and only spike where he knows no one is there.

That said I don't think it warrants a fine at all. A penalty and a chewing out by BB should be enough for Gronk to realize in this PC NFL you have to be careful. It will be interesting to see if Jackson gets fined for flipping the ball at the coach last night

Gronk's spiking of the ball dispicability < Braylon doing the dougie in Butler's face dispicability.

    Gronk's fine $7500 /> Braylon's fine.

    Goodell <3 Jets.

    I learned this at Harvard.

I think the refs get way too much leeway in calls like this. Why don't they wait until it's obvious enough to call the penalty for that and if it's deemed as such on film after a game, then fine. This is ridiculous.  Murton Hanks sits in a room and decides the ref was correct automatically because the ball is spiked next to player who fell down trying to make a play? It's not like he walked over to the guy. Unbelievable. Just flat out awkward to watch Goodell's NFL.

That's what the appeals process is for.  The Ref had to make a call one way or the other.  Patseng made some good points that Gronk can use as defense (i.e I didnt see him there, wasnt intentional etc.).  Let the process play out and see what the outcome is.

If the fine does stand, a guy with the initials TB should pick up the fine with all the TD passes Gronk has pulled in for him in a year and a half.

I was thinking about this recently.  I think it's absolutely redicuous that these players are being fined so much for such petty things.

Give me a break with fining Gronk $7500 for a spike!  The team took the penalty and that's the puishment that fits the crime..  Then they go ahead and fine him - rediculous!

I think it was an over the top fine. I don't understand fining for non-injuring plays. Should you fine offsides? Pass interference? Makes about as much sense. All fines collected by the NFL are donated to charity.

If you analyze the play (which the league presumably does but wouldn't put it past them to arbitrarily fine based on trivial politically correct reasons like NFL +porn star=bad ) gronk spikes the ball.  He's big so it's a big spike .  He didn't look at the db so it seems obvious that he was just excited (for good reason).  Oops sorry .my bad.  Didnt wait for endzone to clear...

just your basic home town call, ridiculous .

also , what is the injury here... Hurting the DBs feelings...? Or the fans'...?

    hopefully gronk appeals.

Hey I don't think i should get fined for illegal parking either!!!! I am not hurting anyone!!!  Seriously thou the fine is suppose to be a "deterrent" so they will not do it again.  I mean there fining that guy 15k just for wearing orange shoes.....

I agree they are getting out of hand with it but does anyone know what Gronk makes this year?  the 7.5K to him is most likely like 50 dollars to most of us.

How much money a player makes is completely irrelevant.  Gronk spiked the ball when he shouldn't have and the team took their penalty.  That should of been it!  The fact that they're fining him over a spike is absolutely ludicrous.

I don't agree with the fine but according to the rule they created it is a penalty. I will never question a ref who calls a penalty according to what is written in the playbook, no matter how stupid I think the rule is. I will however, get on refs for not calling penalties that should be called, are inconsistent calling penalties throughout the game, or calling phantom penalties.

But according to your logic the tuck rule should never have been called which means we would have never won our first SB and maybe wouldn't have won 2 more afterwards. You have to play by the written rules and if you don't you should be penalized. Fining though I think should be reserved for deliberate acts meant to injure or going overboard with taunting of either fans or opponent. Which case Gronk doesn't fit into either

How about this resolution? Let's take any subjective guesswork (relating to what any game official will think/see/believe?

    JUST DON'T DO IT!!!!!

Score the TD, hand the ball off to the ref, and get out of the end zone. This wasn't Gronk's first rodeo. He's done it before, drew a penalty, and forced the kick off to be longer than it should have been. I'm waiting for all you "Free Expression supporters" to whine if/when this activity actually cost the Pats a game. Recall the game a few years ago vs the Colts where an end zone mental melt down gave Pay-a-ton the ball in much better field position, resulting in a Pats loss? Di the players get the blame? No. It was the "stupid, dumbazzed NFL".

Amazes ne that, despite knowing it's out there lurking, players still want to play with fire. Guess what? It's NOT what any playr or fan wants it to be. It's what the NFL wants it to be. Not too many winners in that "Guess What The Call Will Be?" sweeps.

In Response to Re: Unbelievable fined by NFL. Do you agree or not?:
The only issue is don't put it in the hands of the ref. Saying "he's taunting" is clearly subjective.  That's the difference. It gives the refs too much power to take the rule and enforce it. I'd suggest the refs learn what PI is and be consistent with that before tossing flags/not tossing flags for that so inconsistently every week. PI is subjective, but this taunting rule shouldn't be. I always say, if you aren't sure, don't throw the flag. That's usually a good barometer to be right more often than not. And barring, Gronk yelling something as he spiked it which taunts that specific player, it's ridiculous becuase it's not Gronk;s job to know where the other player is. Brady spiked the ball last year in Pitt and then taunted the fans. Is that a personal foul 15 yarder and a 7500K fine?

If you don't want it in the Refs hands then who's?  Your right taunting is subjective, i would add sometimes-- sometimes its pretty obvious.

The Ref has to be the one that makes the call because it's not just the fine but the penalty.  They have to make the call right then and there. The fine part is from the League office.

Re: Unbelievable fined by NFL. Do you agree or not?

Will all of you "Spiking the footbll" fans raise your right hands? Believe and feel that this is an integral part of the game? Anyone want to take the point that a TD just scored is meaningless without the now seemingly mandatory "spike"? If there is now spike, is the score diminished? Is there a point reduction? If the score cuts the home team deficit to, say 17 points with 3 minutes to go, are you ultimately happy?

I DON'T go to a game to see a spike. The person actually scoring a TD will NEVER run the risk of drawing a penalty and the ensuing fine. It amazes me that: 1) there seems to be this inherent NEED to spike the ball  2) this activity is NOT coached out by the HC's of the NFL  3) Fans od players/teams hit with these penalties/fines consistantly whine about how unfair the NFL is, or that spiking the ball isn't as bad as a a late hit, or, more funny " a REAL unsportsman-like penalty".

Don't know about you, but I've never seen a player penalized or fined after handing the ball to the nearest game official, or just dropping/leaving it on the ground.

With stupidity and risk taking, there are quite often consequences. Just waiting for the game when this activty actually costs the Pats an important game. Can hear the wailing now.....

NFL has made it clear, do not show up the other team or you will be penalized and fined. Period.

Last night game Eagles vs Gaints, Desean Jackson long reception taken back because he threw the ball towards the Defensive Coord of the Giants.

If you want to be considered an "elite" player then act like one...

NFL wants it players to act like professionals or every little pop warner football kid will be taunting like the pros...

if I remember correctly, Branch quickly caught Gronks attention after the TD and pointed to where he should spike the ball and then Gronk, liking the idea, spiked it in the guys face perfectly.  So the ref threw a flag and whatever.., they're inconsistant with this sort of thing but I'm fine with the call.  But the fine is absurdly wrong, strange even.

And I agree that TB should pick up the tab on this one, he's got the cash.

    Hey AZ,

I enjoy a spike and I love the passion it presents. As BB has said, you should be excited when you make a play.

However, there is a right way and wrong way to do it. Most of the time Gronk does it the right way. All he has to do is take a second to make sure another player isn't around and he's fine. Actually if he didn't turn around to spike the ball he's fine. He just needs to be smarter about it and I think we can all enjoy the spike. That's all I want is for players to take the half a second to make sure they don't do something stupid in celebration

Amazing how you want them to think about where and how to "outsmart" a game official or the NFL. It's like, well, if I go 39 in this 35 MPH zone I'll be OK, as it's not like I'm REALLY speeding..."

NOT spiking the ball is a 10000% sure fired, guarandamnteed way to NOT get penalized or fined.  Or, am I missing something on this math?

Let's play this out your way. AFC Championship Game, TD pass to Unnamed WR with less than 2 minutes to play, puts the Patriots ahead. He catches the ball, holds it out to the crowd, looks for a place to spike it, players begin to gather around him, he rears back and fires the ball into the ground. It bounces up and nails a defender just standing there. Flags fly, 15 yard penalty. Kickoff comes from the 20 yard line, there is a breakdown in that Oh so good Patriot defense, and the opposition scores with less than 10 seconds left, putting them ahead.  Think this is NOT a possibility??  Still willing to blame the NFL?

Just don't do it! Don't risk it! Let them spike balls all over the place after teeh game's over if they want to. They can have a Team Spike at mid field if they want! Just don't do mit in a game!

A 15yd. penalty is not enough for this type of thing?  You also have to be fined a ridiculous amount of money also?

It's not like there was potential for serious injury like in a helmet to helmet tackle or trying to twist someones head off while making a tackle.

It was a spiked ball after scoring a TD.  Are they trying to protect the other teams  feelings now too?

    Just plain sad.
