FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Welcome to Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots host the Vikings today (Fox, 4:15 p.m.).

    Some pre-game news and notes:

Weather conditions. Wind will be something to monitor today as the orange flags atop the goal posts are dancing and the wind is whipping through the stadium at times. This figures to affect the kicking game first, and possibly the deep passing game. Wind gusts of 19 miles per hour are expected by kickoff, with a temperature around 50 degrees, according to Weather.com.

Biggest media corps on the year. Randy Moss' return to Gillette Stadium, Brett Favre's injury status, and simply a big game between the Vikings and Patriots has yielded the biggest media crowd of the season. Reporters from outlets across the country are scheduled to be in attendance, while ESPN, NFL Network and NBC are among those which have television reporters on site.

Anderson gets the call. Walt Anderson is today's referee.

Throwback uniforms for the Patriots. The Patriots will be in their red throwback uniforms today. The uniforms are from 1985, as the 2010 season marks the 25th anniversary of the 1985 AFC Championship team.

Jerod Mayo on GameDay cover. Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, who leads the team with 77 tackles, is on the cover of the GameDay program being sold at the stadium today.

Halloween theme. The Patriots host their first Halloween game and reporters that arrive in the press box have an orange "trick or treat" bag at their seats. The flip card for today's game also has a cobweb in the upper left-hand corner and one game-day staffer was checking in media members while wearing a Randy Moss mask.

National anthem & colors. Krita Marcou, of Billlerica, Mass., will perform today's national anthem, while the Color Guard is the USS Constitution.

Patriots "Kick Cancer" initiative. As part of the Patriots Charitable Foundation's season-long "Kick Cancer" initiative, the Patriots are promoting lung cancer awareness at today's game. Brigham & Women's Hospital will distribute 40,000 fun flags promoting smoke-free living.

It's days like these I wish I had an HD TV. I also have the urge to smell the stadium and the concessions, but I think I'm just really hungry. Deep thoughts...

    Welcome to Gillette (Halloween edition)

Posted by Shalise Manza Young, Globe Staff

    Hey all --

Already saw one Moss mask on the way into the stadium today, and expect there will be several more as the man himself makes his return to Gillette as a member (again) of the Vikings.

Interestingly, this is the first-ever home game the Patriots have played on Halloween -- they have played seven times on Oct. 31, but all were on the road. Spooky stat: they're 2-5 in thos games.

Every report/tweet that's come out the last two days indicates that Brett Favre will start for Minnesota, which is the most predicatable non-story of the week. For the Patriots, Deion Branch (hamstring), Patrick Chung (knee), Matthew Slater (ankle) and Mike Wright (knee) are all listed as questionable -- we won't know for sure who's in and who's out until about 2:45 p.m., as inactives come out 90 minutes before kickoff.

There are no players on the field as of yet, but there are a bunch of kids taking part in the Punt, Pass & Kick competition in the north end zone.

We'll be posting updates throughout the day...

we could really use this guy for this game. I don't think he will be that affective and I would hate to see him injure it further.

    Ian R. Rapoport
RapSheet Really hurts for Patriots not to have safety Patrick Chung. Lots of pressure on James Sanders and Brandon Meriweather

(This is what I was worried about.....)
