    Vollmer is back...

O Line seems to be about as healthy as it has been all year. How about the Pats line up with Solder and Cannon as eligible TEs, Light Mankins, Connolly, Waters and Volmer as OL, with Hernandez and Gronk as double fullbacks for BJGE, and pound the snot out of 'the great and wonderful' Giants D-Line until they beg for mercy??? Start with 2 TEs on the right, motion Hernandez in that direction, and have Gronk lead block. Hammer that side for 3 or four plays, then switch to the left side. Once they are beat down and cant ruch the passer as well, switch to the no huddle and burn up their weak LBs with the real TEs and Welker.

    Re: Vollmer is back...

Great sentiment and I think they would surprise the heck out of the Giants coming out with a pound n ground offense.. I can even see the panic on the Giant sidelines after the first possesion 80 yard drive taking 7:34 off the clock and already showing signs of weakening the Giants defense. The 'in game refiguring' of their entire game plan and the pressure put on Eli to not turn over the ball on downs would send the Giants into Chaos. After three possesions the game would be over.

All the credit in the world to the Patriots staff for taking such a bold new approach. (not that they shouldn't take an occsasional shot down the field)  But do you really think they would do this? I think they will stick with a mixed offense and make it close game.

(I know this strategy could also go very bad too)

If only it were that easy.  If you do that, they'll put 9, 10, or even 11 in the box, so you won't be going up just against their front 4.

Not saying it won't work (maybe the Giants can't handle that kind of power), but I don't think there's any guarantee it will work.

Furthermore, I think you need to game plan to score 30 points on offense because you can't rely on the Pats' defense to hold the Giants to less than 20 points.  Ground and pound is generally not a good offensive strategy when scoring lots of points is necessary.  Belichick has been using the term "complementary football" a lot this year.  A ground and pound offense works best if it's complemented by a strong defense, because ground and pound also tends to be low scoring and so it's a winner only when the defense can keep the other team from scoring a lot.  Without a reliably strong defense, the Pats have had to use more of a quick scoring approach on offense.  People keep questioning why the offense is so pass happy.  There are two reasons: first, it's what the offense is best at, and second it's complementary to a defense that gives up long drives and 20+ points a game.

Ok, but after watching the first game between these two opponents, I don't think that a.) brining in an extra lineman will work, and b.) running the ball is the cure all.

In the first hald NE ran 12 times for 58 yards, ran more than they passed, and also brought in Solder as an extra blocker a season high (in just one half) eleven times.

They basically came out and tried to run it down NY's throat, with extra blockers. They scored zero points that way.

Such a scheme would not really surprise the Giants, because they've seen it, and the evidence shows it won't really be effective.

Having Solder is great as a short yardage option. But he isn't a game plan, nor in this day and age is bringing in a sixth lineman and two running backs and just going 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

    Not at this level.

Are you sure?  I heard that if we hand the ball off to BJGE 20 times a game, it's an automatic forfeit by the other team.

The reason they ran so much in the first half last game was because the field position was horriffic. Their drives started at their own 5, 6, 17, 20, 11 and 9 yard lines. They had somewhat better starting position in the second half, and the results showed. I think anything they can do to slow down the Giants pass rush will help, and doing some ground and pound would be a part of that.

Running can be effective if out of the same formation you can also pass well.

A RB that can come out of the backfield and catch as well as 2 TE's that can block or catch. More like Gronk and Solder as TE's. Wonder how rusty Solders receiving skills are? Has he had reps in practice?

Hern could be a slot , potential blocker, runner on a reverse type play and screen. Obviously Welker could too.

The other issue is inviting too many players on D up to the line essentially make Red zone like D the entire field.

Running can be effective out of a nuch of different formations. Running will be a part of any game plan whatsoever. I think against the Giants, NE will want to run the ball when they can get the NJ defensive ends trapped in the middle of the formation.

Part of that might mean converting a tough third down in an awkward formation, but if they can get it so that the Gints put their 4DE package on the field, and NE has Ridley or BJGE and two TEs out there, they will likely pounce and start running from the no huddle.

I'm just noting that the fact that Volmer is back doesn't mean NE is going to alter their entire offense and go 1940's football.

I'm not sure I follow this. They ran more because they had terrible field position? Why would you adjust to poor field position by going to 3TE formations for entire drives?

It seemed like, from Q1 to Q3 NE was trying to execute a game plan that involved using a 3TE formation with Solder as the extra. I don't think it was an adjustment to field position that you run more of one kind of formation that you have at any point in the season.

They probably thought they saw something in the Giants' defense that made it vulnerable, and really missed the mark, or else the Gint's just did a great job at adjusting.

Regardless, they did get better field position in the second half, partly because the Giants started scoring instead of moving the ball and punting (their punter killed Ne in that first half, and it didn't help that the defense kept letting them grab 30-40 yard chunks). And they did move the ball more effectively, especially in the redzone, and part was the field position, but a huge (undeniable) part is how they opened the offense up a bit.

I don't think getting an extra few yards on punt returns is going to make a formation work that the Giants were so prepared for last time.

NE can move the ball easily against the Gints, but they need to control the tempo of the game, speeding it up when they Gints have heavies on the field, and slowing it down a touch when they bring in their 4DE sub.

    Re: Vollmer is back...

    Here are a few facts.

12 carries for 58 yards is just shy of 5 ypc. Pretty good production in that half for our running game.

After the opening drive, every drive(other then a woodhead draw for minus 1 yard) until the 4rth qtr ended on an incomplete pass, an interception or a Tom Brady sack/fumble.

So I ask you, how did running the football more then passing lead to us not scoring points?

The Giants dominated our "passing" game like I have never seen before.

Perhaps we should have run the ball more then just 12 times in that 1st half?

    Re: Vollmer is back...

In Response to Re: Vollmer is back...:
Here are a few facts. 12 carries for 58 yards is just shy of 5 ypc. Pretty good production in that half for our running game. After the opening drive, every drive(other then a woodhead draw for minus 1 yard) until the 4rth qtr ended on an incomplete pass, an interception or a Tom Brady sack/fumble. So I ask you, how did running the football more then passing lead to us not scoring points? The Giants dominated our "passing" game like I have never seen before. Perhaps we should have run the ball more then just 12 times in that 1st half? 1st and 10 at NYG 23 E.Manning pass short middle to M.Manningham to NYG 37 for 14 yards (P.Chung).     1st and 10 at NYG 37 E.Manning pass incomplete deep left to M.Manningham.     2nd and 10 at NYG 37 B.Jacobs up the middle to NYG 45 for 8 yards (J.Ihedigbo).     3rd and 2 at NYG 45 E.Manning pass incomplete deep left to M.Manningham.     4th and 2 at NYG 45 S.Weatherford punts 45 yards to NE 10, Center-Z.DeOssie, out of bounds. Actually it was 14 for 58 (my bad on the first post) which is really a 4 YPC.

Outside of the very first play of the game which was an 18 yard run, NE produced 40 yards on 13 carries. That is closer to a 3 YPC.

The run production wasn't really that great, despite bringing in Solder.

I know you basically want to blame anything thatever happens bad in any football game ever right down to losing the coin toss on not running the football enough, but you are wrong here.

But the point of the thread is discussing the formation, not (god save us, yet another) run the ball because it always works and never, ever fails, oh yeah O'Brien stinks, thread. LOL.

NE's run heavy, extra blocker game plan wasn't very effective -- it is manifestly evident.

The only point in that game where they really moved the ball was the drive before the half for the missed FG, and the drives late in the game, all of which featured a more open formation, Solder on the bench, and more quick passes.

Running more would have had little impact on that game.

Not removing Hernandez or Welker or Branch for a rookie OT to come in and play as a TE might have however.

Go Z!  Talk some sense into these fools.  Oh wait, the entire board has been donig that all season, and these guys still say the same nonsense over and over again.  Guess they are just here to agitate rather than contribute.

After the opening drive, every drive(other then a woodhead draw for minus 1 yard) until the 4rth qtr ended on an incomplete pass, an interception or a Tom Brady sack/fumble. So I ask you, how did running the football more then passing lead to us not scoring points?

Looking at 3rd downs like that is completely biased.  No one in their right mind runs it that much on 3rd and long which also happens to be the least successful down and distance for an offense in the NFL.  Maybe they wouldn't have been in so many 3rd and longs if they didn't commit untimely penalties or run for 2 yards on so many carries.  If I was going to argue for running the ball more I would not use the Giants game as an example because as Z correctly pointed out until the last drive of the first half where they threw almost exclusively NE's balanced attack resulted in 0 points.

He's not wrong. He's completely correct.  BJGE had turf toe at that time.  Run BJGE 20 times, no turnovers, NE wins. 12 carries for 60 yards would mean 18 carries is probably going to yield close to 90+ if infused well.  In Brady/BB era, a lead back going over 100 yards, NE is 31-1. Case closed and sealed for now until eternity. If it is time for ZBellino and Prolate to simply step forward. The alliances of ZBellino, Prolate and Mighty speaks volumes to me and I am sure everyone else here. The jig is up.

Don't forget, the "alliance" apparently includes Bill Belichick too, since he hasn't fired O'Brien yet!

Also, if you look at the drives, several first and second down runs produced limited yardage, which forced us into passing situations.  I've marked in red several runs that failed to produce and forced passes later.  I'm not trying to say passing is always better . . . all I'm saying is that running isn't always a panacea.  A lot of times running results in punts.

    First drive

1-10-NE5(13:23) N.Solder reported in as eligible. B.Green-Ellis left guard to NE 23 for 18 yards (M.Boley).
1-10-NE23(12:49) R.Wendell and N.Solder reported in as eligible. B.Green-Ellis left tackle to NE 23 for no gain (M.Kiwanuka).
    2-10-NE23(12:15) B.Green-Ellis up the middle to NE 28 for 5 yards (L.Joseph).
    3-5-NE28(11:34) T.Brady pass short left to A.Hernandez to NE 32 for 4 yards (A.Rolle).
    4-1-NE32(11:00) Z.Mesko punts 46 yards to NYG 22, Center-D.Aiken, fair catch by A.Ross.

    Second Drive
1-10-NE6(7:12) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass short left to D.Branch pushed ob at NE 12 for 6 yards (M.Coe).
2-4-NE12(6:36) N.Solder reported in as eligible. B.Green-Ellis right tackle to NE 15 for 3 yards (O.Umenyiora).
    3-1-NE15(5:59) D.Woodhead up the middle to NE 14 for -1 yards (D.Grant; M.Kiwanuka).
    4-2-NE14(5:28) Z.Mesko punts 50 yards to NYG 36, Center-D.Aiken, fair catch by A.Ross.

Foruth Drive (Third Drive failed because of interception)

1-10-NE20(13:02) N.Solder reported in as eligible. S.Ridley right guard to NE 23 for 3 yards (A.Rolle).
2-7-NE23(12:24) T.Brady pass short right to R.Gronkowski pushed ob at NE 31 for 8 yards (M.Kiwanuka).
1-10-NE31(11:52) N.Solder reported in as eligible. S.Ridley right tackle to NE 32 for 1 yard (L.Joseph).
2-9-NE32(11:09) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete short right to R.Gronkowski.
3-9-NE32(11:05) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete short left to D.Woodhead. Brady bobbled high snap
    4-9-NE32(10:59) Z.Mesko punts 43 yards to NYG 25, Center-D.Aiken, fair catch by A.Ross.

20 carries equals a win every time.
with brady under center, the patriots are 17-0 in games that bjge has run 13 or more times, including playoffs.

they have to run the football to beat the giants...

If BJGE gets 20 carries and NE wins, will you finally capitulate with regards to this topic?
    Posted by RustyGriswold

There's nothing to "capitulate" on.  Running BJGE 20 times might work or might not.  All I've been arguing is that there are good reasons why the Pats don't always run BJGE 20 times a game, and that running him 20 times a game won't always be the best thing to do.  Are there times when they might win by putting Brady under center and running Benny a whole bunch of times? Sure.  But that doesn't mean it's the only strategy that works or that other strategies aren't sometimes better.

You simplify things to absurd binaries and then try to say you're right an everyone else (including Bill Belichick, apparently) is wrong . . . football isn't so simple.

It is not that simple. but we know this.. If we turn the ball over twice or more BB says we have a 17% chance of winning the game.

The last 22 playoff teams that turned the ball over 3 or more times all lost until we beat the Ravens.

Tom Brady threw 4 interceptions against the Ravens, 2 were taken back because of penalties.

Against the Giants in NOV Brady threw 6 balls that hit the Giants defenders in there hands, only 2 were caught. He was also hit ALL day one of which resulted in his 3rd turnover...a sack fumble.

Tom Brady imo is as clutch as ever, but the defense of the Giants/Ravens/Jets have proven they will commit to flooding the field with DB's. So Brady throws into coverage more then he should have to.

If we throw 2 or more ints in this game I don't think we will win.

BJGE has never turned the ball over.

We need to run the ball.

Make them change what they are doing defensively, as in commit to stopping the run.

Then Brady will not have to throw into coverage.

    Then we will win imo.
