What's it because of Welker? Either way, nice!

most likely Woodhead. If you look at the players lost vs players gained Svitek takes care of Thomas, Amendola for Welker, and Soap for either Woodhead or Chung. Since Woodhead did more this year and was on a playoff team it makes seems like he'd be worth more

Compensentory picks are based on some formula that weighs the FAs lost to the FAs signed for a given off-season. I believe 2014 pics are given base doff of 2013 FA...so, yes, Welker going would have been the largest single factor in that. a 3rd is the highest a team can be awarded, so that seems right.

I was expecting a 6th round pick...this is very much better indeed...this year we'll get a real player with that pick!

Re: We got a 4th round pick

This is fantastic news.  What's NE's selection count (missing any Rd?)?  This gives Belichick 1st Rd options now...  Take a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th (and move down even a handful of spots).  Take the remaining 2nd & 3rd (4th used), 2nd and 4th (3rd used), 3rd and 5th (2nd used), and BB could get:  An early 2nd, or 2 very early 3rds & still have that comp 4th pick (or 1 '14 2nd, 1 '15 2nd///1 '14 earlier 2nd & 1 '15 early 3rd) in options 1 & 2... Or several spots up in 1st (2nd used) and still manage to package a 3rd and a 5th for a decent 2nd...have that comp 4th rder, then have a 6th, 7th, and 8th (IF ne has those still currently).

    Good options though.

Let's be fair...they had to keep Joe McKnight! I'm sure he's doing well these days, let's check wiki...

"He was released by the Jets on August 26, 2013"

    Oh...well. Yeah.

At least they drafted Shonn Greene early!

    And Sanchez...

    And Geno Smith...

You know...they ought to just NEVER draft offensive players.

Re: We got a 4th round pick

The front office seems to rig the system every second year.  The front office pulls in a pile of other teams' important free agents one year (this past month) and of course loses no draft picks.  The second year, the Patriots lose a pile of important free agents to other teams and then they get rewarded with an extra pick.  This strong in-out cycle beats losing just as many free agents as you get every year, which never gets any free picks.

    Nice finagle.

The team hasn't picked a big winner in the fourth round all century, other than Gostkowski and maybe Jarvis Green.  The compensatory pick must be used, not traded.  This doesn't mean that BB won't be happy to trade away his other fourth rounder for perhaps a third in 2015 or for moving an earlier pick upward a few spots.

Nice to have it, but the reality is that 4th round picks aren't that likely to make the roster.  That's not just true for the Pats, but the entire NFL.

I would like to see the Pats trade 1 or more of these later round picks to move up rather than down.

This is perfect for a trade up in the second round..

I disagree totally. The 4th round is a wildcard with PLENTY of good NFL players to be found.

I just did a cursory glance over 2010 (need at least a few years to judge a draft) and found:

A Verner, Hern, Geno Atkins, Kam Chancellor, Dennis Pitta, Everson Griffen, 6 solid to elite players off the top of my head, and that doesn't factor the O and DLineman I'm not as familiar with (and that round was heavy on lineman), and west coast players who may be solid, but not household names. If I really dug, I'd guess about 50% of that round, that year, are AT LEAST solid NFL contributors.

Kam Chancellor was the second pick in the 5th round.
