WEEK 11 NFL PICKS and "Game of the Week"
posted at 11/15/2011 3:40 AM EST
It's always more fun going into a new week, fresh off a big Patriots' win. Now in firm control of the AFC East, and armed with a fairly soft schedule over the final seven games, the Pats should have ample opportunity to earn a playoff bye in the weeks ahead.
The Week 11 games present some really tough games to call...beginning with the "Game of the Week":
1.) (6-3) Cincinnati Bengals (+7) @ (6-3) Baltimore Ravens: Both teams are coming off losses, and both teams need a win to keep pace with the Pittsburgh Steelers, atop the AFC North. The Bengals battled back at home, after spotting those Steelers a 14-0 lead. But, the deficit proved to be too much to overcome. The Raven are an enigma. They sweep the Steelers, yet they lose to both Jacksonville and Seattle on the road. So, the question becomes, do you bet on a rookie QB against that veteran Ravens' defense? Or, do you bet on the Doctor Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde Buzzards?
PICK: Bengals;
2.) (5-4) N.Y. Jets @ (4-5) Denver Broncos (+4.5): Another tough game to call. How will the Jets respond emotionally and physically, after being drubbed by the Patriots last Sunday night? Last season, you may recall that the Jets had a bit of a "hangover" subsequent to the 45-3 pounding the Pats put on them. Denver has big problems on offense. Their top two RBs, Knowshon Moreno and Willis McGahee, are out. Though QB Tim Tebow has been winning, he's completed just a dozen (12) passes over his last two games, combined!!! For those of you with insomnia, you should record this game...and then replay it every night at bedtime:
PICK: Jets;
3.) (5-4) Tennessee Titans (+6) @ (5-4) Atlanta Falcons: The Titans are coming off a good win over the Cam Newton led Panthers. The Falcons may have blown their season last week in losing to the Saints at home. For those of you who don't know, the Falcons pulled a bit of a Belichick, choosing to go for a 4th and two inches, at their own 30 yard line, during OT. But, instead of running a QB sneak, or a play-action pass to pick up such a minute distance, they stupidly ran a slow developing hand-off to Michael Turner. After Turner was dropped for a two yard loss, the game was lost. It will be interesting to see how quickly the Falcons can put that demoralizing loss aside:
PICK: Falcons;
4.) (5-4) Buffalo Bills (+2) @ (2-7) Miami Dolphins: The Bills have fallen apart the past two weeks...getting blown out by both the Jets and Cowboys. Meanwhile, Miami has been very competitive over the past four weeks, and have won two games in a row, behind reserve QB Matt Moore:
PICK: Dolphins;
5.) (3-6) Jacksonville Jaguars @ (3-6) Cleveland Browns (+1): This one promises to be a real heart-stopper...LOL!!!
PICK: Jaguars;
6.) (5-4) Oakland Raiders (+1.5) @ (2-7) Minnesota Vikings: Carson Palmer continues to get comfortable with the Raiders' offense. Oakland needs a win to retain their place atop the AFC West. The Vikings looked awful last Monday night, in Green Bay:
PICK: Raiders;
7.) (2-7) Carolina Panthers (+7) @ (6-3) Detroit Lions: Both teams will try to rebound from blow-out losses. The Panthers were routed at home by Tennessee, and the Lions were buried by the Bears in Chicago. But, the Lions tend to play much better at home, than they do on the road:
PICK: Lions;
8.) (4-5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+13.5) @ (9-0) Green Bay Packers: The Packers look and play like the 2007 Patriots...and have a legitimate chance of having a perfect season. The punchless Bucs have lost four of their last five:
PICK: Packers;
9.) (5-4) Dallas Cowboys @ (3-6) Washington Redskins (+7.5): Dallas has a chance to overtake the Giants in the NFC East. They have a soft schedule, while the Giants have a slew of tough games ahead. The Redskins have QBs Rex Grossman and John "The Beck Girl" Beck to choose from, each week. How thrilling must it be to be a Redskins' fan?
PICK: Cowboys;
10.) (3-6) Arizona Cardinals (+9.5) @ (8-1) San Francisco 49ers: The 9ers and their tough defense are for real. The Cards have played well the past three weeks, in barely losing in Baltimore, beating St. Louis, and winning in Philly:
PICK: Cardinals;
11.) (3-6) Seattle Seahawks (+2) @ (2-7) St. Louis Rams: Though Seattle is coming off a big win over the Ravens, they are a much tougher team to beat at home, than on the road. St. Louis has been competitive in the last three games...winning two of those three:
PICK: Rams;
12.) (4-5) San Diego Chargers (+3.5) @ (6-3) Chicago Bears: San Diego continues to under achieve and flounder, under Norv Turner's "leadership". The Bears have the lean and mean look of a playoff team. They may be the only team standing between the Green Bay Packers and an undefeated season:
PICK: Bears;
13.) (3-6) Philadelphia Eagles (+4) @ (6-3) N.Y. Giants: Michael Vick suffered a pair of broken ribs last week, in the first quarter of the "Dream Teams'" loss to Arizona, at home. Though losing in San Francisco, the Giants acquitted themselves well...and are playing good football. Eli Manning is having the best season of his career, thus far:
PICK: Giants;
14.) (4-5) Kansas City Chiefs (+15.5) @ (6-3) New England Patriots: The offensively challenged Chiefs will be without starting QB Matt Cassel, this coming Monday night. Though the Patriots are coming off a huge win over the Jets, over the past few weeks, their running game has been non-existent, and their offense overall has been inconsistent. Meanwhile, their secondary has a tendency to make any QB look good. This is your classic "trap game", which the Patriots will manage to win. But, covering a 15.5 point spread is a lot to ask:
PICK: Chiefs.
BEST BETS: Green Bay, Rams, Cowboys.
As always, your comments and game predictions are welcome.
With regards to the Patriots' game:

Texpat,
As much as I respect your ratings and predictions, I do wonder sometime that a knowlegable person like you will say he is picking the "chiefs".
Chiefs have been pathetic, they knew against broncos that the Broncos will Run and Run only..yet they were unable to stop them.
So my pick will always be Pats, it is oppotunity for Pats to try out Price & new schemes on defense -

Pat...I'm not predicting that the Chiefs will win. I'm predicting that the Pats will beat them, but by less than 16 points.
Pat...I'd be interested to know what it's like, living in India. Are you still living there? How long have you been there? Do you like it there? -

Matt Cassel is likely out for the season with a hand injury: http://www.kansascity.com/2011/11/14/3266843/cassel-may-be-done-for-year-palko.html;
Houston QB Matt Schaub is likely out for the season with a foot injury.
Key injuries can and do disrupt and destroy seasons. As good as the Steelers, Patriots, Saints, and Packers are...if any of these teams lose their starting QB...it's over. -

Pretty light week of good games.
NYG/Philly has some intrigue because the Giants could put the last nail in the Dream Team coffin, after what Philly did in NJ last year.
I disagree on the game of the week pick. I think Baltimore shows up for this one big time. Last week was a classic trap game scenario for The Ravens. Cross country game coming off a huge win.... Ravens 27 Cinci 10.
A couple upsets I'd look out for would be The Redskins and Dolphins. -

pats will win by at least 20! bb may feel sympathy since its romeo across that field as opposed to a joe gibbs and a paoli involved who he may have to work with on trades in the future... thats y it wont be by 30. kc cant run ot=r throw the ball or pressure the qb and playing in foxboro were pats just lost their last game. doesnt bode well. typler pank willl not even finish this game. andre carter will have another 3 sacks at the least. few spreads like this are ever covered but this is as safe a lock as i have ever seen. ocho will get his first TD and 100 yard game. -

My perfect game scenario is a win with no injuries.
At this point in the season getting through a game with no one getting hurt becomes as big a priority as winning itself. And yeah I know you can't in reality play not to get hurt. -

The different is Baltimore and Buffalo. They will win games and cover the spread. The Pats win but not cover 15.5 since they have so many friends in the MGM like Scott Pioli, Defensive coordinator and so on.

My Power Ratings for Week 10
The Jets have done ok this year despite a pretty tough schedule. For the Patriots to empty out a New Jersey stadium midway through the fourth quarter, all the while playing a huge pile of unknown cornerbacks, safeties and backup linebackers, is a serious statement about both teams. New England has dredged up quite a bit of depth off of the waiver wire and off the street over the past two seasons, and the newbie defense is apparently starting to play together. Haynesworth leaving appears to be another Moss leaving – a quick turnaround.

Last week’s game of the week: I finally broke this streak at 5 games. You just can’t beat Vegas day in and day out every day, unless of course you’re the one fixing the games. Still, it’s nice to be in second place!
This week's Game of the Week:
Nothing golden this week, but I’ll take Chicago at least 3.5 points better than San Diego. Chicago played Detroit like they meant it. San Diego hasn’t beaten an impressive team all year, they haven’t had a win period in four games and they recently lost to Kansas City.
The horrific stink in Arrowhead Stadium will need a long time to clear out, what with a hometown utter laydown versus Miami and then a loss to Tim Tebow who couldn’t throw, and so my numbers favor New England over KC by 16.4 points next week. Since Tex asked, I lean just a bit toward New England on top of all the points. It's still not worth the vigorish.

Other than the Steelers game (Roethlisberger is a great QB) the defense has been playing well overall lately. I know the Pats have struggled against back up QB's the past few years but this guy must be pretty bad if he can't get playing time with Cassel playing so awful this year. The Chiefs have a decent defense but it gets tired with all those 3 and outs Cassel puts up. I can see it close at half time but I can't imagine the Pats not putting it away handily early in the second half. If the Pats start off with the ball and can score a TD on the first drive it could be a complete blow out. If they don't allow Cassel 20 pass attempts a game what can they do with this QB. They have only one good reciever on that team. The Pats almost never get beaten by the dregs like the Ravens do. -

Tyler Palko.
Tyler Palko Tyler Palko Tyler Palko Tyler Palko Tyler Palko!
First of all, Matt Cassel was struggling with a line that let the dogs in on him, and receivers that couldn't catch. Palko inherits this offense.
Now comes something high-scoring at least out of the Scrabble tiles. He's short and can't see over the line that well. That part hasn't changed. On draft day he didn't have a cannon for an arm and his lower body strength was just adequate. Since then he has bounced around the league and the CFL like a pinball. 12 months ago he was unsafely on the practice squad for any team to take.
Worse in the short run, he's a left-hander taking over an offense designed around a right-handed quarterback. Either the tackles exchange places and the tailbacks get used to running the opposite way past the QB, or else things are going to look kind of klutzy after only 8 days of first-team practice with the lefty. Palko did all right when no one was expecting him to play, but the Patriots are getting 8 days to think about it.
The KC defense couldn't stop Miami at all, and they really couldn't stop the run last week -- 55 runs and 8 passes. -

I know the Pats have struggled against back up QB's the past few years but this guy must be pretty bad if he can't get playing time with Cassel playing so awful this year.
RESPONSE: Could it be that Cassel is playing awful because his star RB, Jamaal Charles, blew out his knee? His "security blanket, TE Tony Moeaki, was lost for the season early, as well. But, the main reason why he's had problems is due to playing behind an awful OL:
http://www.profootballweekly.com/2011/11/14/chiefs-blockers-fail-cassel
The Chiefs have a decent defense but it gets tired with all those 3 and outs Cassel puts up.
RESPONSE: It's hard to complete passes when you're repeatedly knocked flat on your back.
I can see it close at half time but I can't imagine the Pats not putting it away handily early in the second half. If the Pats start off with the ball and can score a TD on the first drive it could be a complete blow out.
RESPONSE: Assuming that the Pats win the coin toss, they'll defer. They always do.
If the don't allow Cassel 20 pass attempts a game what can they do with this QB. They have only one good reciever on that team.
RESPONSE: Again, the Chiefs OL can't pass protect:
"...The Chiefs’ offensive line has become a liability, and without blocking, quarterbacks and running backs have little chance of being productive. Left tackle Branden Albert said Cassel had no chance Sunday, considering how often he was hit and how quickly defenders such as Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller were in the backfield.
“If he can’t settle in the pocket,” Albert said, “he can’t make his throws.”
It was partly because of this that Cassel completed just 13 of his 28 pass attempts. His longest completion was 15 yards, and he left Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday having compiled a 66.5 passer rating. Worse, he occasionally lifted himself from the turf and limped toward the sideline or the huddle. He suffered a hand injury late in Sunday’s loss, and his status this week is unclear": Read more: http://www.kansascity.com/2011/11/13/3265004/theres-enough-blame-to-spread.html#ixzz1dqAn00Ur

RESPONSE: This is true.

I do not dispute the Chiefs offensive line is bad. Cassel has been awful though this year, and he was not all that great last year either. Are there extenuating circumstances? I'm sure there are but i can't believe the chiefs offensive line problems will be solved this week. -

BB is fired up for this game because of the talk about him in the media, and b.) the Pats are still riding a wave of momentum emotion, and b.) the cheifs don't have Matt Cassell.I agree with you. I don't understand the Cassell bashing. There are far worse quarterbacks, and after Moeaki and Charles went down, Cassel essentially lost his #2 and #3 recieving threats at once, and his #1 runner as well.This year's cheifs are apples and oranges. That loss is analagous to NE losing Gronk, Branch and Ben Jarvus Green Ellis all at once. Oh, and losing Waters, who the Cheifs inexplicably let go, lol.Ultimately, they cover. I hate those spreads, but I think NE kills this team.While I'm here, I got the:BengalsBroncosFalconsBillsJagsRaiders (with gusto, Palmer is going to get a lot better quicker, and in the long haul, I see the Raiders being a real team to reckon with)LionsBuccaneersCowboys (I think they will roll for a bit)NinersRamsChargersGints -

In Response to Re: WEEK 11 NFL PICKS and "Game of the Week":I wanted to peak in here and see what you made of the spread. It's bad money. Thankfully, I have none to spend. I hate taking those. Z...if the Pats' don't kill the Chiefs, I think it's cause for concern. Their offense showed signs in NY of returning to form. Hopefully, that trend continues, and the Pats will hang a 40-burger on the Chiefs.
The Pats win over the Jets, especially doing it on the road, was huge. But, how good are the Jets, really? Who have they beaten? I don't believe that the Jets are nearly as good as they were last year. Who have the Pats beaten? They've lost to the two best teams they've faced this season...the Steelers and Giants.
Nonetheless, with the weak schedule ahead of them...the Pats have a golden opportunity to "run the table", and win 13 games. To do so will surely clinch the top seeding in the AFC tournament. Here's what's left on the agenda for the Pats: Kansas City, @ Philadelphia, Indianapolis, @ Washington, @ Denver, Miami, and Buffalo. The toughest of these appear to be road games at Philly, and at Denver, where the Pats historically have had problems:
