Kansas, thats the point. At $9.6 for Wes there is no money for that type of signing.
Take the hit now at $9.6, or pay Wes. Based on the Stevie J contract I have to assume that Wes is looking at 5/$40 with $22 guaranteed...not a good deal for the Pats imo.

"Wes Welker is a remarkable football player for our team and has been a vital component to our offense and special teams since we traded for him in 2007,'' the Patriots said in a statement. ''Utilizing the franchise designation allows both sides more time to try to reach an agreement, which is the goal. Wes remains a contractual priority and we are hopeful that he will remain a Patriot for years to come.'' Well, they did same with mankins & wilfork, now will see with WELKER. I can.t see them take a 9.4 mill $ cap hit for him. Hope they rework a deal to lower that number.

Patriots receiver Wes Welker tweeted the following tonight:

"Glad that I will be a Patriot in 2012. and hopefully '13,'14,'15,'16,'17,'18.........."

That adds some context as to how Welker has received the Patriots' decision to assign him the franchise tag. The topic was explored earlier today

    Noise,

Can you see the Pats resigning Wes for more than 3 years? Do the math. If they guarantee him between $20-$25 million over the 3 year contract, his cap number is not lowered much.
Seems prudent to take the $9.4 hit now, leaves approx $6 for draft choices and approx $8 for additional free agents. Doesnt get the Pats Mario or V-Jax, but it does get RWayne and perhaps S depth.

But they are allowed to spread the signing bonus over a 5 year period so if they sign him to a 5 yr deal that's a 4-5mil cap hit in bonus over that period. Then if they cut him after 3 years they take a hit in dead money in a year (15') which is expected to have a drastically increased cap. Dead money isn't something the Pats have shied away from before, if it meant reducing the cap hit for the current year. So it would be possible to give him that kind of bonus and still lower the cap hit for the next couple years at the expense of some cap space later on (if Welker falls apart)

why surrender that cap space when Gronk, Hernandez, Spikes, Vollmer, McCourtey all coming due?
Dead money still is killer (see Jets and B Scott/M Sanchez/SHolmes)

Because the cap is expected to expand to around 150mil in 15' when the dead money would come up, so it would be the year to take the dead money. You'll also have Brady's contract up after 14' so you get a major cap dump at that point too. Every year the Pats have 7-12mil in dead money because of these types of releases so with the right management cutting Welker before the 5th year of the contract with a dead money hit of 4-5mil is manageable and would reduce his hit this year by about 3-4mil. A 3-4mil cap savings in a year where the cap is tighter might be favorable if they can take a 4-5mil hit later when the cap expands

    Re: WELKER to get tagged

Interesting that Welker tweeted that he's happy he'll be a Pat in 12'. To me that he understands negotiations are just that negotiations and the tag is nothing personal. IMO it also shows that talks might be going well and he's optimistic a deal will get done. If anything it shows he won't hold out in 12'
