What happens to Free Agents after 4 PM today?

Just wondering if the Pats can still negotiate with their players before the start of the NFL Season or if they have to wait.... I remember seeing this, but could not locate anything along these lines today...

The league year starts on March 12th at 4PM EST.... so what can we expect between now and then?

Looks like Pats will not franchise anyone, Can they negotiate with Talib, Welker, Vollmer, Thomas, Arrington, Woodhead, etc....  after 4 PM today or do they have to wait until March 9th (3 days before start of new year) Just wondering....

I think the franchise or tender option on both Talib and Vollmer will come down to the last minute

March 12 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must submit Qualifying Offers to their Restricted Free Agents with expiring contracts and to whom they desire to retain a Right of First Refusal/Compensation.

March 12 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must submit a minimum salary offer to retain exclusive negotiating rights to their players with expiring 2012 contracts and who have fewer than three seasons of free agency credit.

March 12 -- All 2012 player contracts will expire at 4:00 p.m., New York time.

March 12 -- Top-51 Begins. All clubs must be under the Salary Cap prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time.

March 12 -- The 2013 League Year and Free Agency period begin at 4:00 p.m., New York time.

March 12 -- Trading period begins at 4:00 p.m., New York time, for 2013 after expiration of all 2012 contracts.

You're welcome. Forgot to mention that today at 4 pm is the deadline for franchise/transition tags to be applied.  It seems unlikely the Pats will use theirs?

I think they are nervous about the Talib situation and the cost of CB's. It would not surprise me if they transitioned Talib today, giving the defensive backfield some potential certainty.

On the original question - teams retain exclusive negotiation rights on all their UFAs until March 9 so yes the team can negotiate with all their UFAs all this week.
