Who are your 3 second guesses (FOR FUN ONLY!!!)

Thought just for fun as an exercise if you had 3 second guess on players you thought should be cut or didn't want to be cut who are they and why? This is not a exercise saying you know better or to be called a troll it's just for fun so calm down. If that's how you feel you don't need to participate. Mine:

Finch - We haven't had a real returner in a while and our starting field position has suffered. I thought Finch should great potential as a Washington type of returner. Additionally I don't think you can trust Vereen to stay healthy all year and White can't seem to stay up on his feet so I'm a bit worried about our 3rd down backs. Finch showed good vision and some quickness in the holes. Now I don't think he'd be a special runner but I think he showed he could generate his own holes in the draw and has decent hands. Hopefully Finch clears waivers and makes the PS but if he doesn't and another team grabs him I could see this as something similar to when the Jets tried to sneak Woodhead to the PS.

Mallett - Now the season hasn't started so he could still be traded or released but to me I have more confidence Garp could lead us to 50/50 games if Brady goes down than Mallett can. Since Mallett is gone next year anyways I just don't see a valuable roster space is worth spending on a player we're going to lose next year and who might not even be the first option off the bench.

Vellano over Worthy - Just seems weird you traded for Worthy (btw anyone confirm if it was a conditional or a guaranteed late round pick?) then release him for someone who just seems like another JAG. Worthy isn't fast by any means but to me has more upside than Vellano.

Short of that no real complaints about the cut downs. A bit shocked about Aikens getting cut. Esp, since we don't have any other LSs on the team. Maybe Stork was practicing as a LS before he was hurt?

So how about you guys? and remember this is just for fun so if you don't want to for fun you don't have to comment.

Btw -Sam got cut in StL. I knew BB had interest before the draft and given we are a bit thin on pass rusher any chance they might give him a shot? To me he has already shown more as a pass rush this preseason than Buchanan over the last 2

    Trust me, I'm an engineer!

I wouldn't mind BB taking a chance on Sam. Although i don't think BB would want the media circus that comes along with Sam. Then again he did suppress the media circus that followed Tebow so you never know.

I'm pretty sure it was a conditional 7th for Worthy but only if he made the team.

Only one I thought might somehow sneek on was finch but felt it was a long shot. Put him on my 53 figuring if the Pats wanted a return man it would be Boyce, Gallon or Finch with Finch having the best chance to find a spot.

I was not expecting the Aiken cut but not because he was so darn rock solid consistent but just by default.

Unless Mallet was traded I always figured he would be here. Everyone talks trash about the kid but everyone talked and mostly still talks trash about Cassell and Hoyer as well. Even more so when they were here and did not look like the next HOFer in preseasons. Same ole same ole.

People don't like Vellano for some reason but I thought the kid was decent. Especially for being a rookie and he can play inside and outish. My surprise would be you having a thing for Worthy knowing how you are about injury problematic players.

My one 2nd guess would not be in cuts but in the lack of depth I felt they had all along at LB, while people were going crazy about the TE situation, justifiably so, I was wondering about the LBs. Yes even when they brought in Anderson who I did not care for because he was a "coverage" LB and figured if they needed that they should just use one of their bigger DB's.

...but its easy for me not to have many 2nd guesses since other than Finch and Aiken out for Flemming and Barker it is what I had for my 53 guess

I don't think most are trashing Mallett as much as knowing he's gone next season and in 4 preseasons hasn't shown enough to say if Brady goes down he can pull a Cassel (who even in the best of circumstances couldn't get us in the playoffs).

For Worthy, yes I don't like his injury history but as I've told True dozens of times the back of the roster is a good place to take those risks. Vellano doesn't look much more than a journeyman to me so I'd rather keep a Worthy with higher upside than a JAG. Just personal preference. As for the injury prone, my feeling has always been you can afford to keep a couple as roles of the dice just as long as you don't need to count on them or they are unique talents. Gronk is a unique talent, if White could stay on his feet we'd have a good enough replacement I'd say we didn't need to count on Vereen, and in Worthy's case he'd be a back of the roster play so wouldn't need to count on him either. That's where I separate the I don't want any injury player BS people toss out as extremist arguments vs understanding some players are just injury prone and you have to pick and chose if you can sustain those players going down and if they are in positions you need them then you have to properly back them up.

    Good list PE.

I guess I'd add that I believe that keeping White among the RBs, or at least as many RBs as they have in general, seems a bit odd when you are only carrying 3 TEs. I'd rather have Worthy's body, or another interior OL.

I agree on Mallet. I like Mallet a bit, but really if JG has already earned more reps in preseason, jetison Mallet for whatever you can get. In general, unless your #1 QB spot is up for grabs, I never like the idea of carrying three. Not in today's NFL where contact players are injured so frequently.

The Worthy move, front to back, was a head-scratcher too, but I won't second guess it.

Danny Aiken. I truly, truly am uncomfortable with the idea of Nink snapping and our Kickers taking snaps from Nink. One injury to Nink could ruin his season, one bad snap could ruin a game.

Again, personal philosophy: given how difficult getting long snaps down is in the NFL (for some reason?) I would never go without a dedicated LS.

The Jackie Robinson of football got cut today, huh?

That would be like the real Jackie failing to crack the Dodger line-up out of spring training in 1947 and being sent back to Montreal....never to be heard from again

Is that the fate of Michael Sam, I wonder?

Big difference, Robinson was a player right from the gate, Sam has potential but not a talent you say we must make room on the roster for.

Honestly, I think the only people who didn't see him as anything but a 7th round kid trying to make a roster was ESPN

Michael Sam has a problem with stiff hips.  He might manage as a run-only specialist linebacker, plugging the hole and colliding with the running back, but he can't cover and that's big trouble for a linebacker.  I regularly criticize stone-hipped draft picks.

I was hoping against hope that you were asking, "Who are your three second guesses for AFC East division champions?"  Miami, the Jets and Buffalo, not necessarily in that order.

They'll keep some LB cuts on the practice squad.

Mallet probably won't get traded unless someone is willing to trade more than the compensatory pick we'll receive from the league when Mallet walks next year.  Could happen if someone (rams?) is desperate enough after 3 or 4 losses to start the season.

They'll definitely have to wait to see how the practice squad shakes out, how many young guards we're able to keep.  There's sense in keeping the young tackles on our roster (even if I'm not high on them) because both Solder and Cannon will be up for contracts next year and Vollmer isn't young.

I do get your feelings about WHite as so many others agree. But I think he is better than what you are seeing on some of those carries. He is great in blitz pick up and that is huge. He adds a real ability to release and catch a release pass and turn it up north south like Kevin Faulk. He will not wow and so will not make you wish he was the key. But he will quietly make plays by either helping protect TB or getting a release pass.

You can counter what about Vereen who will be on the field in passing downs quite a lot. Well, White is depth for a passing down back. He also seems sure handed  (not a fumbler... ) and he tends to want to use the blocking given and run north south (again like Faulk). So the team knows the value they will get from him on the field.

In the end I think he belongs. He will not impress ANY fantasy football fans. Only coaches on this team and opponents teams.

    Agreed

I was being a little facetious with my previous post. I said in May after the draft that before anyone declares him the gay Jackie Robinson (as some were doing back then), Michael Sam has to at least make the team first

I'm sure he was given every opportunity. He just wasnt good enough

I wanted to keep Tommy Kelly as DT help has been an issue for us.

I thought we should keep Bernhaius or however you spell his name but then again I thought we should keep Anderson too.

I would have rather cut Vellano then Worthy but that is also based on draft status and projected upside. I can't pretend I saw enough from either guy to make a decision. Apparently Vellano looked good in camp, and we should consider a 2nd year in the system should bode well...

If the alternative is Joe Vellano than I wanted to keep Kelly.  Bearnhaus may stick on the practice roster, Fleming made some plays as well so who knows?  He had more size than most of the other LB options.

Re: Who are your 3 second guesses (FOR FUN ONLY!!!)

How about my 3 second guess from the last 3 offseasons:

2011 - Belichick cuts Merriweather, brings in Goldson, can't work out the cash over reportedly around 1 million, Goldson is a stud and the Pats have a terrible secondary and fall just short in the Super Bowl.

2012 - BB spends a 2nd rd pick on a guy who would be there in the 6th-7th rd in Tavon Wilson, passing on board favorite DT Kendall Reyes who went one pick later (and could have gone 12-18 picks higher) and since then has 10+ sacks and is a well above average starter in SD who could have helped keep Vince healthy.

2013 - It was reported that the Emmanual Sanders offer Pittsburgh matched was just 750k or so short of being unmatchable by the Steelers. The 3rd rd pick we gave up was Harmon, who 99.99% would have been there in rd 4 where we took Boyce. Sanders over Boyce when TB needed some veteran pass-catchers (on a team that lost 4 close regular season games last year b/c of offense) would have put the AFC Champ game in Foxboro.

Honorable mention: Muhammad Wilkerson, Akeem Ayers and (later) keeping Woodhead over Ras-I Dowling, Shane Vareen (hurt most of his 1st 3 years) and Hightower.

    My 3 are:

Beauharanis- He did have a lot of tackles but he couldn't cover your grandmother.  Maybe BB got tired of trying to spell his name too.

Aiken-Where did that come from?  If Nink has to do this, he will be even more gassed at season's end.

Devey-I watched this guy a lot after all those early preseason snaps and he got pushed around.  Seems he could have been a stash on the PS pretty easily.

Honorable mention surprises: Wendell (although he showed better at the end of camp).  In another thread, I predicted cuts of Mallett and Slater.

    My 3 are:

Finch over White - I've not really seen much from White and I thought Finch was a bit of a burner in the return game

Kelly over Vellano - Middle bulk and I thought he looked pretty healthy in the pre

Aiken cut - Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
