    Who Woulda Thought ?

After the PATS won their 3rd SB in 04, what PATS fan predicted TB would retire with 3 rings ? Answer : No one. Immediately after the 04 SB win, I asked myself how many more Lombardis will the PATS have with TB. At the time, my best guess was "2". I really believed Brady would retire with at least 5 rings. And he still might win another SB. But I think it is highly unlikey with BB as GM. San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta and Gomer's team have become the early favorites to win the SB this year. Belichick has continually fielded sub par defenses since 05 that have lost big games at the end (ie. see 06,07 and 11 ). When is the last time the PATS had a consistent pass rush ? And what FA signings has BB made, since the Welker and Moss signings in 07, that have been productive for more than one year ? And how many 1st, 2nd and 3rd round busts ? I have been calling for BB to relinquish his GM duties for a few years now. I think BB is a fine HC who knows game preparation, game strategy and the importance of team focus as well as anyone. So I don't think Kraft would hire another GM, because he knows  BB would then resign as HC. If any NFL fan would have bet in 2004 that with TB as PATS QB through 2015, Brady would retire with 3 rings, that fan would cash in. I may be wrong about the 3 rings. But I doubt it.

I'm just glad they aren't favored to win the SB this season. I have been tired of seeing them as the favorites year after year.  I much rather them be underdogs.

No doubt San Fran, Seattle, Atlanta and Denver are being discussed as the favorites to win it all, they have made some nice moves.  It will be fun watching San Fran, Seattle and Atlanta all battling it out.  3 very, very good teams!

Well I think you bring up some good points and you will be labeled a troll because of it. Truth is the ball was dropped when we decided to sign and trade for guys like...Haynesworth, Ellis, Springs, Fred Taylor, Ocho Cinco, Fenene, Gregory, Stallworth (again), Gaffney (again), Gallery, spending 4 million on back up tight ends last year...never mind giving Banta Can't and Bodden decent money deals (I think we are still paying for Bodden). Any other GM would of been fired for that - ours gets to ignore the scouting reports from his scouting department and draft 15 kids from his son's university 5 rounds before he should. No team has had more draft picks than us over the last five years. No team has missed on as many. I bet if you asked Belichick privately what he thought of Chung, he would say he sucked...point blank. The guy only stayed on the team because the other 10 safeties we brought in were just as bad.

You can't take the GM duties away from him because he will quit as a head coach (and he's a damn good head coach), but something will have to change going forward. Kraft can't be happy his GM gave a known thug 41 million dollars. He can't be happy he gave another 5 million to our thug cornerback. And he can't be pleased he's got a linebacker from Belichick's bud Meyer who has his own porn video, skipped off season workouts and got in trouble a half a dozen times on twitter last year.

Who would have thought in 2001, coming off a 5-11 season with Drew Bledsoe at the helm that the Patriots would be SB Champions?

    Time will tell.

What do you mean? Brady is good for 10 wins all by himself. If he was on the Jets, they would go to the super bowl too. Just ask Babe and mthurl!

Seriously though, neither GM Bill nor QB Tom is the problem. Actually, 30 other teams would love to have our problems.

Well, back then we thought BB was some sort of a genius GM and now those with insight realize he inherited some great players, made a couple of key moves and lucked out bigtime getting Brady. Since those dynasty days we have found out BB is very human indeed and as a GM has simply let the team around his HOFer wither into mediocrity.

Poor drafting will do this.  They had holes to fill.  They should have been filled with low cap number rookies and second year players.  Instead, it's Fat Albert and Adalius Thomas on defense and Fred Taylor (still can't believe that one) and Chad Johnson on offense.

I think walking away from good backfield players time and time again has also been quite a mistake.  (I admit to being an Asante Samuel and Lawyer Milloy fan.)

It's really is too bad that this team didn't rule the world for the decade.  With Belichick coaching and Brady throwing, it really should have.

I can understand that point of view, digger.  It's impossible to say.  I know that I would feel a lot better about the last decade if there were more Superbowl victories, but what happens if those catches aren't made is unknown.

If Scott Norwood makes that field goal in SB XXV is Parcells still in the conversation as one of the best coaches of all time?

It's easy to say that if the Patriots had drafted better then they would have won more super bowls (many teams could say that) but it ultimately comes down to player execution. That and the Giants matched up well against our strengths.

nonsense...besides the defending champion ravens why would the 49ers and seahawks-both younger and loaded with talent-"love" to have ur problems? why would the giants, with a healthy nicks and cruz back and eli in his prime with proven winning hc and gm want to be in the pats shoes? why would the colts and skins with two once-in-a generation talents to build around at QB and young playoff rosters want to have pats problems?

besides wishing they played in that perrenially bad division u guys play in i really don't think any of those teams envy the pats

Generally agree with this babe. Your word mediocrity is a bit harsh based on the Pats record.

A good cross section of Pats posters here feel, as You, that as a GM, BB hasn't been able to replace those skilled positions from the SB era. Because of BB success as a HC the relative low bottom of 1st RD pick has become perennial. Instead of versatility if BB had chose to pick the best talent available at those particular positional standpoint(s) that worked well in his system, like SS, DT, DE, CB (note: all on D).  Then over the last 5 years or so, picked up (spent) just for a couple of proven higher end but young FA to the mix, the Pats would be most likely, be sitting with 5 SB Rings now.

Troy Aickman was not wrong when he said " this 2011 Patriots D is the worse I've seen in a SB. It was that little bit of an edge of 'pure positional Talent' that has been missing for quite awhile. The Pats O led by TB even with Reche Caldwell,Maroney etal; was/is consistently good enough for 11 wins for Playoff spot.

What pizzed me off about BB the coach, was playing a crippled Gronk in a SB. The guy couldn't jump 2 feet for a free beer if had to, that Interception by TB was on BB not TB, Gronk was so bad he could'nt reach around and hit the ball away .... I could'v done that.

I didn't like that throw.  It was a desperation pass short of it's destination.  Yes, a healthy Gronk, or any other healthy player could have and should have been able to knock that ball away.  But I didn't like the pass to begin with.

LOL, TFB12 ..... yeah, not a great pass but if Gronk was fit, he could easily knocked it away, NO PI but just reaching for the Ball. Another thing, that desperate Hail Mary at the end, Gronk was within 2 feet of that drop, iF, IF, IF he was able he may, may, may, have dove for it and caught it. We will never know but i'd like to ask him about it.

Again lol ..... your Gif photo of Tebow going out for a pass? That was a good pass but a great defensive play ... no?

Man, I think about that Hail Mary pass all the time.  I really think if Gronk was 100% he could have really planted off that bad ankle and made a play on the ball.  It was right there!! RIGHT THERE!!

Tebow pass... Good defensive play but that was some sad route running.  He leveraged the defender terribly.  But what was even worse was if that defender wasn't there Tebow wasn't ready for the pass.  His hands weren't even in position to make the catch.  The ball got there, he wasn't ready, the ball hit him in the head.

How did you like his blocking in the other photo.  Clearly he can't be successful at TE this year... if ever.  I like Tebow, I would like to see him succeed with the Pats in some role, some position but I just don't see at TE.  Maybe for a few plays a game, but to depend on him to block or protect Brady, heck no!  Maybe put him in Gronks place to block for extra points, that might be ok.

I think people see "mediocre" as "bad". It isn't. It's average. Put Brady at QB and have BB coach an average NFL team, and you would immediately be in the SB fight.

And as far as drafting in the later part of rounds, that is/was not the handicap it seems. One thing is he never had to waste picks on finding a QB like so many other teams did. Another is that until the rookie wage scale picking in the top 10 was actually a huge financial risk for teams that could least afford a miss.

The Tyree play was really spectacular. The Eli to Manningham pass not so much b/c Manning of course had adequate time to throw and he was throwing against a very sub par defensive backfield. Great plays/lucky plays over the years usually even out.  Example : the tuck rule, Vinitieri's miracle blind kick in the snow and Andy Reid/ Donovan McNab's incredible blundering last drive in the SB . So if you take away those spectacular/lucky plays we have 0 SB wins. You can't expect all the bounces to go our way.

The events that took place over the past decade? Well, it is what it is. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Doesn't make any difference now. As long as Brady is in there, the Pats have a shot every year at the SB.
