Re: why did the Chargers put Gates on IR now?

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego Chargers have placed Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates on injured reserve and signed fullback Billy Latsko.

Gates has been dealing with a painful tear of the plantar fascia in his right foot and wasn't expected to play in Sunday's game at Denver. The Chargers were eliminated from playoff contention in last Sunday's 34-20 loss at Cincinnati.

Gates hasn't played since a Dec. 5 loss to Oakland. He has 50 passes for a team-high 782 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games.

Latsko spent most of the last three seasons on the practice squad with Carolina and San Diego. The Chargers signed him to the active roster for seven games in 2008 but he has yet to play his first NFL snap.

Re: why did the Chargers put Gates on IR now?

So they wanted another blocker available for the game.  Even if the game doesn't help them reach the playoffs, it's still a chance to evaluate personnel in a game situation, which can impact off-season moves.

I think the real question here is why do you care so much about a team making a standard move?

Also, to answer your question, they put him on IR now because they are eliminated from the playoffs.  They hadn't placed him on IR yet in case they made the playoffs and he was able to come back in time to help during the post season.

Re: why did the Chargers put Gates on IR now?

Could be that they want to activate a player from their practice squad, rather than one of the other 7 on the regular roster who would be inactive.  This actually makes a lot of sense, get a look at a player they have interest in for the future, but haven't seen in live game action.

There is no reason actually for them NOT to place Gates on IR.  The venom you seem to have for this move is a bit odd.

Re: why did the Chargers put Gates on IR now?

They probably would have IR'd him a month ago if they knew they weren't going to make the Playoffs. They kept him hanging around because they might have been able to use him down the road in the playoffs. As far as the move itself, I guess it is of little consequence right now, but if you go on the theory that you do what's best for the team every week it makes sense.I have a feeling Norv still thinks he's coaching for his job this week whether ownership says so or not.

Not that it matters, but why not put him on IR? They signed another guy and didn't need to cut someone to do so. We all hate the Chargers, but it seems to be nitpicking calling them out on this. The whole team will have a few months to recuperate after Sunday in any case!

In Response to Re: why did the Chargers put Gates on IR now? : You questioning that I think it weird is odd. Why put a guy on IR for ONE game?  So what if they lose because they don't have ten tight ends.  It's not like they're in a battle for first place and need to win.  Why not put him on IR on Dec 5th, when he was originally hurt then?  This situation is so Favray like. also, if he is hurt bad enough to go on IR, would he have played in the playoffs?  Highly unlikely if it's bad enough to be on IR for one game.  Look what he did agains the Pats when he was hurt in 2007...nada.

"Hurt bad enough to go on IR" He is hurt bad enough to not play the rest of the year... that is 1 game.  If they had a shot at the playoffs, he would not have been "hurt bad enough to go on IR."

What does "if it's bad enough to be on IR for one game" even MEAN?  A player going on IR means nothing more than he won't play for the rest of the season due to injury.  That fits here, because the rest of the season is exactly 1 game.  It doesn't mean the guy HAS to have a potentially career threatening injury.  In this case, if Gates wasn't going to play in Game 16 due to injury, and they will have no Game 17, IR makes sense.

Why on Earth wouldn't the Chargers use this opportunity to get a look at an additional player that they wouldn't have a chance to otherwise?  Whether it be a practice squadder, or an outside signing.  It's not about winning the game, it's about evaluating personnel.
