Why does BenJarvus Green-Ellis not play???

I think BenJarvus Green-Ellis is arguably, the TOUGHEST running back on the squad and deserves a lot of playing time. I remember early last season when Brady went down and we had so many RBs hurt, McDaniels and BB did not want Cassell throwing the ball at all so they decided to pound it with this guy and he did great.

He's a tough runner and makes his decision to hit a hole fast. When he runs, I always hear helmets smacking and never falls backwards when he gets hit. Even in pre-season (though againt non-starters), ran all over the Giants. If I had to give the ball on 4th and 1 to any rusher on that team, I would give it to him because he always gains positive yards. Left, Middle, Right...he averages 4-5 yards on every carry.

So my question is, why in the world does this guy not get playing time? I'm beginning the feel like most of the team's issues are being blamed on the players but the real issue is the coaching. Call me crazy but anybody that has paid close attention everytime he gets on the field definitely knows that he's better than Maroney and Sammy Morris.

The list should be: 1) Fred Taylor 2) BenJarvus Green-Ellis 3) Faulk 4) Sammy Morris

nonono, the question is, why doesn't any of the RBs on the roster play? the backfield is loaded with talent yet they keep throwing the ball 50 times a game.

Re: Why does BenJarvus Green-Ellis not play???

Faulk is the #1 back. He's had the most snaps the last two years, and will likely have the most this year. The best "third-down back" in the business, IMHO.
Taylor is the #2 back, and is talented and well-rounded, but I don't think he can handle any more than 10-12 carries a game at this point in his career.
Maroney has the most upside, but he's very inconsistant. Also, he can come out of the backfield and serve as a fourth WR (which may be very important this week).
Morris has led the team in rushing the last two seasons, but has not looked particularly sharp this year. I'm wondering if he has some sort of minor injury, or if he's on the back side of his career.
GJBE is a pure up-the-gut runner. He runs hard and is good at it, but he's one-dimensional (which s why he has not been on the 45-man game day roster). We'll see him at some point, either because of the game plan or injuries.

BJGE Should be playing for sure.  Best RB I have seen here since C. Dillon.  I did not get the Fred Taylor signing.  We dont pound the football so why do we need him.

He is not very good at blitz pick up in fact I bet that's the number one reason. Not what you want with Brady coming back. Even a running back as great as Adrian Petersen gets taken out of games on downs because he's not a very good blocker.

Posted by Ritchie_az[/QUOTE] I disagree that he's one dimensional. During the preseason and last year during the season he proved that he has great hands and his yac are great. He's also a punishing runner when tacklers are present much as was Walter Peyton.  He was great during the Giants game picking up the blitz's. I'm scratching my head over it.

That may be true but unfortunately untill or unless he gets better at blitz recognition and pickup he's just not going to get significant playing time. When then alternative is getting tommy killed, its a no-brainer.

Re: Why does BenJarvus Green-Ellis not play???

    To Ritchie_az:

Ofcourse Morris is the leading rusher for the past 2 years...considering that him and Maroney has had by far, the most carries since 2007 and we all know Maroney has not been productive.

Even if BenJarvus is one dimensional (which i disagree), he gains positive yards. I'm not saying the guy should start but definitely deserves some good playing time. I'd rather see him running the ball than Maroney and if he's bad at Blitz protection, then sub him out on those plays.

Sometimes, smash-mouth up the gutter style of running the ball and letting the O-line get aggressive and knock some defenders around can help the protection.

Re: Why does BenJarvus Green-Ellis not play???

BJGE does not have nearly as good of hands as Faulk, Taylor or Maroney (and probably Morris, too). But it's more than "just hands". It's running outside the Tackles. It's route running. It's blitz pick-up. It's reading the defense. It's special teams. There's a lot to it, and the kid has a promising future. But he's NOT Walter Payton, and, odds are, he'll never will be close to being like him.
What BJGE does well is run hard up the middle.

I gotta go with the blitz pickup ability as the reason too.  I noticed Reiss made that one observation about Maroney; he did well picking up the blitz in the Jets game.  If only a few more folks did so well.  That's it, I'm a genius!  Maroney replaces Matt Light and BJGE is our RB :^)

    1. Maybe cuz the Pats are stuck in the past? Same ol wide receiver screens that the entire NFL has prepared for. Same anemic offensive line.
    2. Agents and advertisers don't want anyone to upstage prettyboy.
    3. Pats are still guilty over 'tuck rule' against Oakland and want to emulate the Raiders' success.
    4. The offensive co-ordinator doesn't know that BJGE is on the team.
    5. He might reach the end zone and blemish the Pats' non-intrusion policy.

Re: Why does BenJarvus Green-Ellis not play???

The Pats are a pass happy team now. They want to throw the ball 50 times regardless if it's working or not. It's all about record breakings and score alot of points now, and less about winning in February.

I won't be surprised if the Pats come out throwing 50 times tomorrow.

Taylor and BJE should be the two feature backs. Pound the rock until the coach has to call up the safeties, then air it out to Moss and Galloway.

I feel like people on this board overrate green-ellis becuase of that 100yd game he had. Last season he average 3.7 yds per attempt. Thats not very good. Yes, he does run hard but he probably doesn't deserve too many carries.

I agree, BJGE should get a chance......I think that both bjge and maroney could start if they were on a different TEAM....The pat's just give up on the running game, and it's boom's away!!!! Running Back's need to get in rythem.....not 2 carries and your out.....Kevin Faulk is fantastic... I could do without fragile freddie and morris............DEAR BILL GIVE YOUR RUNNING BACK'S A CHANCE, PLEASE!!!!!
