The Pats have given up 421 ypg......3894 total yards to date

They have given up a total of 15 points

    ...................................................................................

The Packers have given up 397 ypg.......3680 total yards to date

    ......................................................................................

The Saints have given up 378 ypg..........3378 total yards to date

    So what is your point?

My point is that you don't have a point.

This game of football has passed you by.

As long as they're not giving up points, who cares?  That's how they're 9-3.  They're not giving up a lot of points or getting outscored.  The Packers are giving up more points and almost as many yards and they're 12-0.

As long as they can also set the record for most passing yards given up that won a SB I could care less.

You have to make up for the yardage with takeaways.  The Pats are #2 in team defense when it comes to interceptions.

They don't force a lot of fumbles (because they don't hit people).

But over all - on giveaway/takeaway - the Patriots are ranked #4.

    That is an equalizer.

Volume stats, like yards allowed (or gained) are meaningless.

Points allowed are what matters, and they're giving up about 20.5 PPG right now. That will win you a lot of games in the NFL.

Would like to see that come down to about 18 PPG before the season is over, but it's important to remember that they've also given up a lot of "garbage time" points that's skewed the average.

Re: woo hoo! pats are on pace to give up more yards in the HISTORY of the nfl!

The game has gone more UFL with all of the passer and receiver protection rules.

BB understands that he has one of the hottest offenses around.  Therefore, against most teams defensive yards can be cheaply discounted if the offense just gets the ball back without giving up points.  So, the defense's regular job is not to give up touchdowns, to put up some kind of a fight just outside of field goal range, and be #2 in the NFL in interceptions.  After that, a 10 yard pass is kind of tolerable.

This blueprint changes when the team is 28 points ahead in the fourth quarter.  Now the 10 yard pass is quite tolerable especially if the receiver stays in bounds, and the 5 yard run up the middle is practically handed out for free.  A large proportion of the cheap yards allowed have come in the fourth quarter, when scoring points has to be somewhat discounted also, as long as the defense helps to eat the clock and thus secure the victory.  I deliberately don't measure hopeless points scored because they don't reflect what either team can really do next week.

The Patriots are 23-5 over the last two seasons, and the defense gave up a huge number of yards per game last year too.

What a great analysis CC.  Since you don't think they will get a ring, they won't.  I'm going to stop watching now, it's pointless since you declared the season will end in failure.  Thank you for saving all that electricity.

Posted by Davedsone[/QUOTE]look, first and foremost, i'm a PATSSSS fn. just not sukking down all that kool-aid carte blanche. at some point, we have to worry about the yards as well. its still a game of attrition. like being a boxer who takes a lot of hits to the head to get in one knock out. that may work 90% of the time but against a sugar ray or ali, odds are u will LOSE! a smart coach and a smarter qb in the playoffs will exploit that. heck tee "everyone" bowwww will figure it out. i bet u will see a no-huddle offense to force our base personnel to stay out there on 3rd down deep in our territory where we are more likely to give up them points! sooner than later, taking punches catch up to you.

perhaps thats y we have so many injuries, always on edge and so forth. if we priotitize stopping the yards, perhaps we will have a shot. keep being casual about it at record breaking speeds, will LOSE! YEP HOW COME SAN FRAN, pitt, broncs, AND THE RAVENS ARENT ON THE SAME PACE, IF THE GAME HAS CHANGED SO MUCH? RUN THE BALL, SMACK OTHER GUY IN THE MOUTH ON OFFENSE AND DEFENSE, AND U WILL WIN. DONT CARE WHAT ERA OR TIME IT IS.. we don'tttt! o yeah, rodgers ain't winning a ring either!

Not saying they will but imagine if we do make history that way and then beat the 16 & 0 Packers in the Super Bowl...??  Now that would really be history making and vindication all in one.  However, the probablility is poor.

Re: woo hoo! pats are on pace to give up more yards in the HISTORY of the nfl!

Pick a stat any stat and use it to support your claim. Stand by it no matter how many times it gets beat down.
Pats do not have a good defense...Thus they can't win the SB
Pack has as bad a defense but are favored to win the SB and go undefeated.
There is a 15 yd difference in total yds. 1 pt difference in scoring NE 13 and GB 17.
There are quite a few with better defenses but can not score.

Looking at all the stats you could make a case for several other teams to win the SB and some have losing records or 500.

Said it before we should have not been in the first SB and were 14 pt underdogs.
Everything is based upon what you do the day of the game..
This year IMHO they lost 2 games where the offense did not play well. The 3rd loss was the team did not show up.
If you get the Pats who score 25+ and the D who gives up -20 they will win most games

    It is a balance.
Just like back in the first SB run it was a bend but don't break defense.

Outside of the Steelers all of those teams you listed haven't done squat in the last 10 years.  I don't think any fans actually prefer giving up more yards to less, but you need to chill.
