    25 man roster crunch

Who gets left off? Traded? DFA? Seems like Mortenson, Aceves, Bard and Miller are all competing of one spot. I would start Bard at AAA to rebuild some confidence as a shut down 8th inning reliever. I know they have Breslow and Morales but I think Miller has value. Any way Mortenson clears waivers? Probably not. It would be nice if Aceves could revert back to his 2011 role as a middle reliever who can go multiple innings.

I think Aceves and Bard are competing as are Morales and Miller. I think Miller is a better reliever.

Hanrahan, Bailey, Tazawa, Breslow, Miller, Morales, Aceves.  I think that means we just have two players to deal with.  Bard I would keep in the minors until he shows his old dominance, and then trade him.  Mortensen was kind of shaky in the 2nd half.

    Breslow?

Tazawa has anoption left and probably starts the season in Pawtucket if everyone is healthy.

    If...

Just noticed that.  It would seem as if we are definitely one over.  Mortensen wasn't guaranteed anything, but the rest of the guys are legit major leaguers.

    In response to Softlaw1's comment:

Trading Ellsbury, since the great Shane is in place, will create a space on the 25 man roster. There's also the old Tim Wastefield space that used to make it a 24 man roster, every season.

So Softlaw's suggestion to relieve an overcrowded BP is to trade Ellsbury and cut Wakefield.

Notin---I do not believe Tazawa, our best overall reliever, will start the season at AAA.

BenC just has to make some DECISIONS--not world shattering decisions--just simple decisions that any capable GM can and needs to make.

Bard should be farmed out no matter what he shows in ST.

You have Breslow, Miller, Morales and possibly Rich Hill. I suggest Breslow be traded-most experience and probably sought after.

Mortenson is the odd man out for RH relievers. I think Bailey will be traded. If Hanrahan fails--Taz, Uehara or Aceves can become the closer.

Nava and Kalish. Kalish to minors.

So I see Breslow, Kalish, Bailey, Mortenson and Bard will be moved.

These things usually come down to who can be farmed out without being exposed to waivers.  Its very possible that Tazawa starts the year in AAA because we can put him there without exposing him to waivers thereby keeping everybody.  Talent is only part of the decision (which is an unfortunate reality).

If this possibility comes to fruition, it wouldnt be a terrible idea to use the time in AAA to stretch Tazawa out.  I would like to see Tazawa get another chance at starting.  I personally believe that his upside is much higher than Morales'.  He's probably a better #6 starter than Morales.

    Re: 25 man roster crunch

I personally feel that Tazawa is too talented to be in a seventh inning role.  I'd put him in Pawtucket until a #6 starter is needed.  If he can combine his pre-injury location with his post-injury MPH, and improve his secondary pitches, we are looking at a potential #2 MLB starter.

Look at how good our bullpen is.  I just kind of feel like Tazawa is wasted there.  Bailey, Hanrahan, and Uehara will handle 8,9.

Bresolow is a good lefty specialist.  Miller as well.

I think Aceves has pitched his last pitch as a Red Sox. He is not going to start or close and will be a huge problem for Farrell.

Nava would have more value to this team if he could aslo back up Napoli at 1B. Is it unrealisitc to have him take reps at first during spring training?

With the amount of bullpen depth, which is never a bad thing, and the logjam they seem to have at SS, I still see a trade coming for either a starter or a corner outfielder.

I predict atleast 1 pitcher is traded. I predict atleast 1 pitcher is injured and on the DL to start the year. Even if nobody is injured we might have a rolling healthy DL slot. And I predict Taz in the bullpen in Boston.

As for starting Tazawa, he would lose 2-3 mph if he started. I don't like him starting because of his size. Plus he seems to have cajones for the pen.

How many players will be injured by the time the season starts?

Coaches are also looking at who comes to camp in great shape and deternimed.

It is not unusual to have an abundance of players in January , before Spring training begins. In fact , especially when your team has been a huge disappointment , you want multiple choices....hopefully when the time comes the decision is a tough one. Because if it's easy , it means somebody stinks.

I think Sox fans might undervalue Morales,  who is one year older than Doubront. I would rather see Aceves go for David Murphy...
